DAYTON'S MONEY PROBLEMS
This is what Mark Dayton has said about financing his re-election campaign in 2006:
"I can not either politically or financially afford to finance my campaigns in the future the way I have in the past." Source: Mark Dayton, Star Tribune, February 28, 2002
But after press reports that Dayton's fundraising was behind other Senators up for re-election in 2006, Dayton changed his mind:
"I have not made a promise [about financing his campaign in 2006], I have not made a pledge." Source: Mark Dayton, Associated Press, January 17, 2004
Dayton also said that a candidate's fundrasing success is an indicator of their political strength:
"In addition to strains on the pocketbook, Dayton said there is a political cost to self-financing. 'It gets to the point where people wonder if you have any other basis of support,' he said." Source: Mark Dayton, Star Tribune, February 28, 2002
But once again, after press reports that Dayton's fundraising was behind other Senators up for re-election in 2006, Dayton changed his mind:
"I will never consider mine or anyone else's fund raising to be anything positive about their political prowess." Source: Mark Dayton, Associated Press, July 16, 2003
Huh?
