DAY BLASTS HATCH OVER GAMBLING OPINION
In reaction to Attorney General Mike Hatch’s ruling on the constitutionality of new gambling options, Senate Republican Leader Dick Day issued the following statement:
"We already had this debate constitutionally and the public spoke in favor of gambling. The legislature’s job now is to regulate the scope of that gaming, which we’ve done for years – just ask the Democrats who voted to create the charitable gambling industry.
"Hatch’s opinion is based more on wishful thinking than legal reasoning. And frankly, he needs to remember that his job is to defend the legislature, not issue preemptive and unfounded attacks against our work.
"I think what we’re really seeing is Mike Hatch using the credibility of his public office to give the Senate DFL a ‘Get Out of Jail Free Card.’ The Democrats are finally starting to understand the public wants new gaming options and some benefit for the state and apparently, they had to call in the big guns to ease the pressure.
"Perhaps Hatch brought up this old red herring to give the DFL an excuse to vote against the Governor’s casino plan and Racino – which is coincidentally being heard in committee today.
"Even worse than that, his zeal to protect his friends in the Senate DFL could very well jeopardize Minnesota’s charitable gambling organizations. Hatch should be ashamed of his shenanigans.”
