SHUTDOWN IN TWO HOURS
The state Senate has adjourned until Friday morning without passing a temporary spending plan, meaning a partial government shutdown beginning at midnight is imminent. Source: Associated Press, June 30, 2005

Why are you deliberately misleading people who read this site? The Senate actually DID pass a "lights on" bill that would prevent a shutdown. It's now up to the Republicans in the House to do the right thing and not let government shutdown.
The previous commenter is absolutely right. Liveblogging of the last few minutes on North Star Politics.
Dean Johnson and the ultra liberals that run the DFL have done it again. Last year they refused to let the government do anything so the public would take it out on the House who happened to be up for elections, while the Senate was not. This year the DFL wants the lit piece and commericals that go after Governor Pawlenty for being the first Governor to preside over a MN shutdown....they care not what the cost of getting it is.
The DFL never had any intention of getting a deal done before the end of the fiscal year. Now they send over a bill that DOES NOT balance the budget as our state constitution requires. It continues the same bloated spending without and additional revenue and it puts the K-12 funding increase at 0 from the Governors recommended 4.5% in each of the next 2 years.
If Dean and company wanted to truly avoid a shutdown, why not do a 10 day lights on bill, instead of 2 year one with the same spending levels that the DFL absolutely new is poor policy and thus unexceptable to the GOP?
And Northstar, I'll refer to Dean as Senator Johnson when he brings some respect to the office he holds. It's about people, not politics.
...and with reactions to your previous comments in a previous post, the Governor and Speaker Sviggum gave Dean and the left wingers what they wanted with regards to MNCare welfare spending for able bodied people who would rather be "artists" than get a real job and they all agreed on a funding increase for education before the DFL killed it with this latest political move. The GOP compromised big time there, you can't logically argue against that. Although I'm sure you will, because that's the thought process of the left.
This along with the Gov putting his neck on the line and offering a cig tax??? Your liberal leadership had not interest in getting it done, the GOP came way over, the DFL wanted the lit piece in 06.
I'm not going to get into most of your other points because what's the use? I won't convince you and you won't convince me. But I have to comment on your "MNCare welfare" statement. Most people on MNCare are working minnesotans that do not have employer offered health care. They PAY for MNCare. It is not free. Many FARMERS are on MNCare. It is NOT people who are unemployed. It is NOT people who don't have "real" jobs. It is families. It is single adults. It is waiters and waitresses. It is hard working Minnesotans. If you want to insult them go right ahead but you should be ashamed of yourself.
The Republicans propose to raise spending 8 PERCENT. How can this possibly not be enough? Why doesn't the DFL do this: Accept the Republican offer to raise spending by 8% and then go to the voters next year. Make the case that spending needs to increase 15% - 20% - 100% whatever they think the voters will be gullible enough to buy. Make the case. Shutting down the government is not the answer. The Dems are definitely to blame.

Why are you posting the exact same comment on multiple sites?
Answer the argument. Why is an eight percent spending increase not enough? How much was your last raise?
nk, that would be a fair statement if the people you mentioned were the ones actually getting cut from MNCARE, but they are not. You act as if there was a proposal to cut the program entirely, which is patently false. The proposed cutbacks to MNCARE (which the GOP in a failed effort to compromise because it's never enought for the DFL, backed off of completely) cut able bodied single adults, not our most vulnerable citizens and those who actually need the program. The single mom with kids who works a tough job waitressing would still be eligible and rightfully so.
And SD is right, an 8% increase in overall state funding is way more than enough. Whose family budget goes up anywhere near that much on any given year?
I'm sick and tired of Republicans talking about how a government should be run like a family/business. Guess what? Government is neither a family nor a business. Government isn't out there to make money or raise children. Government is there to keep its citizens healthy, safe, and to give those citizens the ability to succeed on their own. And guess what? When it's properly funded, it does a pretty good job.
No one is saying government should be run as a family or business but it still has to live within a finite budget. It cannot grow exponentially, can it? It cannot grow without bound, can it? The Republican budget proposal will increase that budget by EIGHT PERCENT. Why is that not enough for you? Why can you not answer that question?
