MDE EXCLUSIVE: COHEN'S OFFICE COORDINATING KERRY VISIT
I was just forwarded this email from a staffer at the state Capitol. I will be notifying Senator Cohen's office to RSVP and to ask why this is coming from his official office.
##
Subject: Email from Senator Cohen's Office: Senator Kerry Visit
Senator Cohen would like to extend an invitation to all DFL Senators, Representatives and staff to meet with Senator John Kerry this coming Monday, October 10th at 11:30 am in the Capitol.
Senator Kerry will be in town on that date and has asked Senator Cohen to set up a time for him to meet MN DFL Legislators and staff.
Before an event is formally set up with Senator Kerry, Senator Cohen would like to get an idea of how many people would be able to attend.
Please reply to this email and let me know if you would be able to attend on Monday.
Thank you.

There is nothing wrong with this, it happens all the time. A United States Senator is coming to town and would like to meet with local DFL officials and staffers. This is completely legit and I see no connection to the Coleman for Mayor campaign.
Stop grasping at straws, it hurts your credibility (Entenza rumors, McCollum and her COS being neighbors) which is already low as it is.
I never said it had anything to do with Coleman's office.
My credibility is solid.
I could see there being a problem if this made mention of raising money. It does not.
What's the issue?
Why would you RSVP? If you weren't on Angela's invite list, you obviously aren't invited. And where exactly is the problem here?
Granted I've only been reading your blog for a few months, but I don't recall a lot of your original stories being correct, unless you count reporting things that everone else does an original story.
you must be joking...
Party opposite: You are so full of crap. MDE consistently beats the Star Tribune and the Pioneer Press. For example, MDE reported that Doran was switching to the governor's race before any other news source had it.
Why won't you comment on where there is a problem with the Kerry visit? And the Doran thing was well known among many DFLers long before you posted. And given what happened earlier this week, with MDE reporting an "exclusive" on Becky Lourey, I wonder how often that happens without someone pointing it out. That's certainly a question we'll never know the answer to, but it certainly damages MDE's credibility to claim something that is not true.
Look I'm not trying to discredit MDE because I like the blog and check it many times a day. It's among the top on my list. But reporting something a day before the Tribune or the PP isn't a scoop because if either one prints a story today, it's likely they've been working on it for several days if not weeks.
To me, being close to the news cycle and trained in journalism, there is a large difference between reporting your own stories and reprinting tips.
Frankly, I'd like to have a little Matt Cooper/Judith Miller moment here. Who forwarded you this message? A DFL staffer? Seriously? Who might that source be?
As another commenter above noted, there's nothing in this message about money or about any campaign that JK is in town for in addition to meeting local legislators. Every time he comes into town he meets with several people, Senator Cohen included.
NK also raises a good point, this is a leaked message that is not intended for the general public. RSVPing to Senator Cohen's office would not only be useless, but extremely rude.
All this being said, I'm not about to go all magnanimous on MDE's sources or reporting. We all do the best we can, and at the scale we're at here in MN, reporting juicy rumors works most of the time....As long as we correct ourselves when the real facts get out :)
What again is the problem with the above email? I guess I missed that.
The RSVP was a joke. I don't think anyone who reads MDE will actually RSVP and then actually think it will be accepted.
Funny, ha! ha! Seems more like harassment to me. You really she remove this thread as it really has no purpose other than to direct people to harass a governemnt worker.
Apparently--because you won't respond to repeated questions on the topic--you agree that there is nothing wrong with the email and it's a complete non-story other than that a United States Senator and former(current) presidential candidate is in town meeting with other elected officials.
Harass a goverment worker? are you kidding me?
A goverment worker uses her government email account to notify other government workers of one political party that the 2004 Democratic Presidential nominee, who is coming to Minnesota for a campaign event for the DFL endorsed candidate for mayor of St. Paul, would like to meet with DFL legislators and DFL staff.
Weak sauce. DFL and GOP caucus events are not necessarily campaign-related, and thus not covered under the same laws that govern local officials using city and state property and computers for campaign work.
I never said they were.
Not to mention, it is not uncommon for elected officials (including our president) to coordinate business and campaigning. An example would be that the official flys into a town and speaks at a high school on education and then later attends a fund raiser in the same town.
I don't see that this letter indicated that it had anything to do with money or campaigning. Where's the problem?
All this bitching about the RSVP made me think of the movie "Tommy Boy".
I tell ya what. If you don't know how to fasten your seatbelt, just raise your hand and I'll have Tommy Boy here come back there and hit you in the head with a tack hammer because you're a RETARD.
MDE: Don't you know that you are not allowed to question motives. Just fall in line.
