ROLL CALL REPORTS ON MORTENSEN
Minnesota; Mortensen Drops Out, Aiding Tinklenberg Bid
Citing a lack of financial backing, Scott Mortensen, who was seeking the Democratic nod in the open 6th district race, ended his campaign this week.
The former minister posted a news release on his Web site saying: "These 2006 elections are critical for Democrats to take every possible seat in order to regain control of one, or both houses of Congress to force Republicans to begin to deal honestly with the American people. I feel I can best help the Democratic Party by stepping aside now."
Mortensen, who was challenging former state Transportation Commissioner Elwyn Tinklenberg for the Democratic nomination, said he had hoped to represent the interests of everyday Americans but "unfortunately, we have not generated enough contributions and support to continue."
Tinklenberg was the preferred choice of national Democrats all along, who feel he has the best chance of winning the Republican-leaning district. Rep.Mark Kennedy (R) is vacating the seat to run for Senate. Four Republicans remain in the fight for the GOP nomination: state Sen. Michele Bachmann, state Reps. Phil Krinkie and Jim Knoblach and businessman Jay Esmay. Source: Roll Call, November 10, 2005
