NRSC: WILL KLOBUCHAR TAKE MARCHING ORDERS FROM NATIONAL LIBERALS?
Amy Klobuchar's Silence On The Supreme Court Nomination Of Judge Samuel Alito Is Still Deafening
KLOBUCHAR HAS YET TO ANNOUNCE A POSITION ON THE SUPREME COURT NOMINATION OF JUDGE SAMUEL ALITO
Klobuchar Said "She W[ould] Wait Until The Hearings [Were] Over To Review Them Fully Before Giving An Opinion On How She Would Vote On The Nomination If She Was In The Senate." "Klobuchar said she has some concerns about some of Alitos views on key issues that show through his past court rulings, but she will wait until the hearings are over to review them fully before giving an opinion on how she would vote on the nomination if she was in the Senate." ("Dayton, Klobuchar Undecided On Alito," Mesabi Daily News, January 12, 2006)
But The Alito Hearings Have Been Finished For Over A Week. "As the weeklong hearings on Judge Samuel Alito’s Supreme Court nomination came to an end Friday, Senate Democrats indicated they would delay the committee vote on him for a week." (Jan Crawford Greenburg, "Alito’s Senate Hearings Conclude; Democrats Hint At Delaying Vote," Chicago Tribune, January 14, 2006)
And The Judiciary Committee Has Already Voted On Alito. (Senate Judiciary Committee, Supreme Court Nomination of Judge Samuel A. Alito, Jr., Reported to the Floor 10-8, R 10-0; D 0-8, January 24, 2006)
Amy Klobuchar’s Silence Was Notable Over Two And A Half Months Ago. "Republican Party of Minnesota Chairman Ron Carey today issued the following statement on Patty Wetterling, Amy Klobuchar and Ford Bell's reluctance to comment on the nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to the U.S. Supreme Court. . . . 'Since the President announced his decision to nominate Judge Alito, the silence coming from Patty Wetterling, Amy Klobuchar and Ford Bell has been deafening. While Klobuchar and Wetterling made their opposition to Chief Justice John Roberts well known, they have been conspicuously silent on Judge Alito." (Minnesota Republican Party, Press Release, "Republican Party Of Minnesota Calls On DFL Senate Candidates To Provide Straight Talk On Judge Alito," November 2, 2005)
WILL SHE TAKE MARCHING ORDERS FROM HOWARD DEAN AND OTHER NATIONAL LIBERAL DEMOCRATS?
Democrat National Committee Chairman Howard Dean Already Pressured One Senate Candidate To Oppose Alito’s Confirmation. "At a speech in Kansas City on Monday, DNC Chairman Howard Dean implied that [Missouri Democrat candidate for Senate Claire] McCaskill . . . would not vote to confirm the conservative judge. 'If Claire McCaskill were in the Senate, there would be one less vote for Judge (Samuel) Alito,' Dean said, according to a column in Thursday's Kansas City Star." (Sam Hananel, "McCaskill Still Undecided On Alito, Despite Dean’s Remarks," The Associated Press, January 19, 2006)
Liberals Like Ted Kennedy Have Announced Their Opposition To Alito. As of late Tuesday morning, "[s]ix of the [Senate Judiciary C]ommittee's eight Democrats – [Joe] Biden [of Delaware], [Herb] Kohl [of Wisconsin], Patrick Leahy of Vermont, Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts, Dick Durbin of Illinois and Dianne Feinstein of California – ha[d] announced their opposition to his nomination. Many expected the other two - Russ Feingold of Wisconsin and Charles Schumer of New York - to join them." (Jesse J. Holland, "Alito Likely to Win Committee Approval," The Associated Press, January 24, 2006)
HAVE LIBERAL SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS ALREADY DECIDED FOR HER?
Pro-Abortion Group EMILY’s List Blasted The Nomination Of Judge Alito. "President Bush turned the clocks back 32 years with the nomination of Judge Samuel A. Alito to the Supreme Court." (EMILY's List, Press Release, "Statement Of Ellen R. Malcolm, President Of EMILY’s List, On The Nomination Of Judge Samuel A. Alito To The U.S. Supreme Court," November 1, 2005)
EMILY's List Endorsed Klobuchar Last Fall. "EMILY's List, the nation's largest political and grassroots network and financial resource for women running for elective office, today announced its endorsement of Amy Klobuchar in her bid for the United States Senate in Minnesota." Of The 1,235 Contributors To Klobuchar From EMILY’s List In November, Only 40 Were From Minnesota. (Federal Election Commission Website, http://www.fec.gov/, Accessed January 23, 2006)
PERHAPS SHE’S WAITING FOR NATIONAL DEMOCRATS TO RESOLVE THEIR FILIBUSTER DILEMMA?
Democrats Are Feeling "Intense" Pressure From Liberal Interest Groups To Wage An Undesired Filibuster Of The Alito Nomination. "Pressure from liberal activists to oppose confirmation of Judge Samuel Alito for the Supreme Court has been so intense that Democratic senators may be trapped into a filibuster that they do not want to wage. Despite the consensus that Alito performed well in his confirmation hearings, leaders of liberal organizations opposing him -- Ralph Neas, Nan Aron and Wade Henderson -- demand that Democrats vote against him." (Robert Novak, "Intense Pressure From Liberal Activists May Drive Dems To Filibuster Alito Vote," Chicago Sun Times, January 22, 2006)
IT’S TIME FOR KLOBUCHAR TO MAKE UP HER MIND AND ANNOUNCE HER OWN POSITION ON THE ALITO NOMINATION

1 Comments:
Umm... opposing Alito isn't really a liberal position, it's kind of more of a common sense thing;). Take a look at Sen. Nelson(D) from FL, he's opposing Alito and I don't think you can call him a liberal by any stretch.
