KLOBUCHAR FORCED TO DISCUSS DEBATES
The only reason Amy Klobuchar's campaign is highlighting her attendence at a debate is because Congressman Mark Kennedy and Ford Bell have done a great job of exposing Klobuchar's unwillingness to debate.
##
Dear Michael,
This past Saturday, Amy participated in a debate sponsored by the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association (MPPOA). Amy debated Republican candidate Mark Kennedy as well as Ford Bell. She's been leading the debate on the issues these last several months and is looking forward to more debates.
The MPPOA debate was a success for our campaign, and Amy showed, once again, why she will be Minnesota's next U.S. Senator.
The candidates discussed a wide range of topics: from making sure that in a crisis, federal, state, and local law enforcement have a way to communicate with each other -- instead of the problems we've faced on 9/11 and Katrina -- to the effectiveness of the Department of Homeland Security, from the funding challenges facing our first responders to border security. It was a tremendous opportunity for the candidates to discuss the issues important to Minnesotans.
But Mark Kennedy just used it as a forum to continue to mislead the voters. In a question regarding the Republican Congressional leadership's attempts to zero out the budgeting for the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program, funding critical to narcotic suppression (including meth) in greater Minnesota, Kennedy claimed he helped "lead the effort in the House to increase that [COPS funding]."
Fortunately, Amy was there to challenge Mark Kennedy and set the record straight when she replied:
"...the Republican-led Administration has tried to zero this out over and over again, and Congressman Kennedy, with all due respect, you stood with the President when he came in and raised a million dollars for you last year. And you stood with him, and you stood with the Congress that tried to reduce funding.
Congressman Ramstad in two votes in the last two years tried to increase the COPS funding, and you didn't join the other Republicans that voted for that. You voted against the increase.
I believe that we need to support this program and increase funding."
But don't just take my word for it. Watch the video yourself (5 min.). (Note: Videos are in .mov format and require Quicktime for playback).
As a prosecutor, Amy's experience working with law enforcement was clear. No other candidate had as strong a grasp on the issues facing our police officers today, and no other candidate presented the real, practical and forward-thinking solutions Amy provided.
Please watch Amy's closing statement (3.5 min.) or watch the entire debate (61 min.).
Thank you for taking the time to watch these video clips from last Saturday's debate.
Now please forward this email to 5 friends today. Invite them to join our campaign to elect a U.S. Senator who will be straight with Minnesotans. We already have enough doubletalk in Washington. Help us send Amy to the U.S. Senate to fight for solutions for people, for a change.
Sincerely,
Jessica Vanden Berg
