TINKLENBERG BELIEVES WETTERLING WILL KEEP HER WORD AND NOT RUN FOR CONGRESS
Elwyn Tinklenberg, DFL candidate for Congress in Minnesota’s Sixth District, says he believes fellow Democrat Patty Wetterling will keep her word to him and won’t enter that race.
"I trust Patty," he said at a DFL gathering Tuesday night, Jan. 24, in Annandale Middle School.
Tinklenberg appeared along with Dave Detert, who’s seeking the nomination in state House District 18B.
Wetterling dropped out of the U.S. Senate race against Republican Mark Kennedy on Jan. 20 to support DFL front-runner Amy Klobuchar. Wetterling, who's become a child-safety advocate since her son Jacob was abducted near their St. Joseph home in 1989, ran against Kennedy for the Sixth District U.S. House seat in 2004 but lost.
Since leaving the Senate race, she has met with Minnesota Attorney General Mike Hatch about being his running mate in the governor's race, and there’s been speculation she might enter the Sixth-District contest.
But Tinklenberg told about 20 people in Annandale that before starting his campaign he met with Wetterling and asked what she was going to do. She said she wasn't going to run in the Sixth and was going to run for the Senate.
Tinklenberg described Wetterling as a friend who has supported and encouraged his candidacy. "She is a person of her word and I take her at her word."
Tinklenberg was mayor of Blaine from 1986 to 1996 and served as state transportation commissioner under Gov. Jesse Ventura from 1999 to 2002. State Sen. Michele Bachmann (R-Stillwater) and Rep. Phil Krinkie (R-Shoreview) are the front-runners among the four Republicans running for the seat, Tinklenberg said.
"It's going to be a huge battle," he said, predicting Bachmann will emerge as the candidate.
In answer to a question, Tinklenberg said he supports Amtrak funding to preserve and improve the national rail service. The Sixth District covers all of Wright, Benton and Sherburne counties and most of Stearns, Anoka, and Washington counties. Detert, a Litchfield family doctor, wants the DFL's endorsement for another run at two-term incumbent Dean Urdahl (R-Grove City). Urdahl defeated Detert in 2004.
Detert said as a doctor his No. 1 concern is the cost of health care. "It's the huge animal that's eating everything else alive." Health care in the United States costs more than a trillion dollars a year, he said.
The system is broken and a new one that's not tied to employment needs to be developed. Detert said he supports a statewide smoking ban. It's a way to do something to reduce costs, he said, and anything to help people stop smoking is important.
House District 18B takes in western Wright County including Annandale, South Haven, the townships of Southside, Corinna, French Lake and Middleville as well as most of Meeker County.
Roger Golby of Annandale, a director of the Wright County DFL, said the party plans to have similar small meetings in the Sixth District and House District 18B at least through March. Source: Annandale Advocate, January 31, 2006
