TINKLENBERG: "I'M SAD TO SAY THAT ONE OF THE THINGS THAT HAS CHANGED THE MOST IS PATTY''
Wetterling makes it official: She's running for Congress
Child safety advocate Patty Wetterling announced today she will run for Congress in the 6th District.
The move comes two weeks after Wetterling bowed out of the U.S. Senate race after a lackluster performance in terms of key endorsements and fundraising.
"Everything has changed. The world has changed. I have changed,'' Wetterling said.
Last April Wetterling said she would not win in the district. "That was really dumb,'' she of that statement.
Wetterling will challenge former state transportation commissioner Elwyn Tinklenberg for the Democratic nomination. Tinklenberg criticized Wetterling's entry into the race because she had previously reassured him she would stay in the Senate race and not run for the House seat.
He agreed that things have changed.
"I'm sad to say that one of the things that has changed the most is Patty,'' said Tinklenberg, who repeatedly described himself as disappointed.
In a separate news release, he said: "She gave me her word, and has very publicly reinforced her pledge not to run many times since. I'm not sure how she sells this to the voters.''
Also running for the House seat are four Republicans: state Sen. Michele Bachmann, Rep. Jim Knoblach, Rep. Phil Krinkie and businessman Jay Esmay. The seat is now held by Republican Mark Kennedy, who is running for U.S. Senate.
As the only congressional race in the state without an incumbent, the Sixth District is receiving significant national attention and is often listed as one of the Democratic Party's top hopes for a new seat.
Wetterling ran against Kennedy in 2004 and lost by eight percentage points.
When she announced last year she would not run for the seat again, Wetterling cited a poll showing she would do better in a statewide race than in the Sixth District, a strongly Republican area covering much of the eastern and northern Twin Cities suburbs reaching from Stillwater to St. Cloud.
