DOMAGATE: THUMBS DOWN TO JOHNSON
Thumbs Down
To DFL Sen. Majority Leader Dean Johnson for inferring in a meeting with other ministers that he had a commitment from members of the Minnesota Supreme Court that they would not overturn the state's gay marriage law.
Johnson, of course, thought he was speaking in confidence when actually one of the people involved in the meeting was carrying a hidden recording device.
A person in his position as a legislative leader should obviously not be offering such statements especially when they’re not really even close to the truth, as members of the Supreme Court have said.
Johnson apologized and said he made a mistake. We suspect he was doing what many politicians do when the camera and media are not around: mainly tell people what they want to hear, regardless of its degree of accuracy.
Still, that doesn't make it right. Johnson should know better. His cause and his party will be viewed less favorably as a result of his actions. Source: Mankato Free-Press, March 18, 2006
