OSTROW, ELLISON ANNOUNCE CAMPAIGNS FOR SABO'S SEAT
Ellison kicks off campaign, Ostrow jumps in to replace Sabo
The rush among Democrats to replace U.S. Rep. Martin Sabo continued today, with state Rep. Keith Ellison officially kicking off his campaign and Minneapolis City Council Member Paul Ostrow jumping into the race.
Sabo announced Saturday that he won't seek a 15th term in Minnesota's most liberal district, ending a 46-year career in state and national politics when his current term ends.
Ellison said he wants to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq immediately, pass a universal single-payer system of health care, eliminate poverty and turn the country toward renewable energy.
"That's why I'm running — to call our nation back to its better self," he said at a Capitol news conference, surrounded by a couple dozen supporters.
Ostrow said in a faxed statement that he'll seek the DFL Party endorsement for the seat.
Both Ellison and Ostrow said they would not challenge the party's nominee.
