You said that Trent Lott praised a segregationist more recently than Ellison hang around with racists. However, Strom Thurmond did not hold segregationist views for that last several decades of his political career. In fact, Strom was the first Southern Senator to hire African-Americans to work in his Senate staff. If you want to talk about real racism, let’s look at the former Senate Majority Leader and former President Pro Tempore of the Senate Robert Byrd. Byrd, as recently as a few years ago, used the “N” word in a TV news interview. Again, Democrats show how they live under different rules than everyone else does.

I was at the capitol this year when Michele Bachmann spoke out in favor of banning gay marriage.

While I completley disagree, I was there to hear it, so, does that mean I now also have to be a supporter of her cause?

How more would you have Ellison held accountable. He has answered all of these questions in an open letter to anyone who will read it. Would you have him persoanlly go door to door around the state apologizing?

I mean, you took your shot. Keith countered with a smart and effective response, and now you all are again stuck in neutral wishing he hadn’t done that so you would still have something to complain about.

If I were you, I would start rehearsing this phrase: Congressman Keith Ellison. Because you will be forced to bitch about it for the next 30 years.

Does it even matter that Ellison has seperated himself from that stuff- BEFORE he went to elected office. His history of working with other communities is longer than him standing around on some stage with a bunch of nuts.

Should I go through the list of national AND local Republicans who have demosrated infidelity, racist speech, criminal sexual misconduct, malfeasance and misfeasence? All within the last six years, all elected in office.

Here in Minnesota there is no group close to the activities of Republicans. Cheating on income taxes, forced apologies for racially aimed statements, criminal sexual misconduct, stealing, cheating on wives while preacing ‘family values’, cheating and lying on campaign finance reports, lying on affidavits for office.
All within the last three years in our own legislature and the Republican Party Structure.

Bring it on.

I thought of that JimJ. Look how the media went after Dean when they thought he’d be a weaker candidate then Kerry. I remember listening to the news/commentary on liberal KFAI and I actually agreed with them (they being Deaniacs). The establishment is going to push for Ellison.

Karl, are you saying that the 51% of the people who voted Republican in the last election are all racists? That’s a lot of millions of people who you’ve judged.

Serious question. Do you personally know any Republicans? You’ve attacked me, my parents and entire family, many of my friends.

I know a lot of Democrats and would never say things like all Democrats are anti-Christian bigots as I know that is not true.

You really need some diversity training.

No, there’s even more of a difference. Ellison did more than just hang around with questionable people, he HIMSELF advocated racial segregation/separatism as a means for redress of racial grievances. This is much more substantial than merely heaping some empty (but admittedly stupid and insensitive) praise on a 100 year old Strom Thurmond as Lott had done, wouldn’t you say?

Chris, here’s the difference: Trent Lott said within the past few years that the U.S. would be better off had we elected a segregationist.

On the other hand, Ellison hung around with some bad people over ten years ago, people that he has since repudiated.

Find some examples of Ellison engaged in questionable behavior in this decade and you might have a point.

Karl shows the hipocrisy between Democrats and Republicans. Trent Lott said something at Strom Thurmond’s 100th birthday party which was interpreted by some as being insensitive to African-Americans and he was shown the door. Keith Ellison surrounds himself with racists and hatemongers and what is the Democrats’ response? Just more excuses.
