JOHNSON: ENTENZA’S CONFLICT OF INTEREST “SIGNIFICANT”

By Michael B. Brodkorb | June 16, 2006

"Rep. Matt Entenza, the Democratic candidate for Minnesota attorney general, should explain how — and if — he could avoid a serious conflict of interest involving a state investigation of UnitedHealth Group, a company that has given millions of dollars in stock options to Entenza's wife, the Republican attorney general candidate said Thursday.

'We can be certain no attorney general in Minnesota history has faced such a significant personal conflict of interest on such an important issue,' charged the GOP candidate, Rep. Jeff Johnson of Plymouth.

At a news conference, Johnson recognized the attorney general's office has procedures to deal with conflicts of interest. But he said he could not imagine how Entenza, if elected, could adequately separate himself from an investigation of UnitedHealth Group initiated by Mike Hatch, the current attorney general." DFLer’s know there’s an easy solution to this problem. Attorney General Entenza could hire an outside law firm (maybe Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi?) to handle the UNH investigation for the state. Then, if there’s any fines or financial recovery for the state, the law firm would just keep a percentage for their efforts.

What could be wrong with that?

Well hell, if his political opponent deems it significant, it must be.

For crying out loud. Its not like the AG’s office is one lawyer doing all the work. There are plenty of people who will be able to investigate independent of his meddling.

    This Just In:

Political candidate makes accusations, offers no proof. Candidate taken at word because he obviously has no personal agenda. More at 5.

In other news, the Bigfoot/Madonna romance continues to heat up, and Elvis is headlining big show this weekend at the Target Center.

No curiosity about a possible conflict,Roving

Why should taxpayers pay RKMC, or any other large law firm, for services that should be provided to the state by people who are already taxpayer-paid employees?

As for Concerned in MPLS, your head is either in the sand or up some bodily orifice. Entenza used hundreds of thousands of his family fortune to spend on House races in 2004. He has said he will not abide by spending limits in this election. If he’s not going to pump more of his personal wealth into his campaign, then why would he not abide by spending limits?
