The only people who vote for Republicans are either very misinformed or think they will have personal gain in an American political shift to fascism.

Roving Reporter,

The reason this issue is relevant is to protect the readers of the Strib from views being expressed in the paper where the author has conflicted loyalties and may be skewing the information or views expressed to suit those loyalties. When Keillor's columns are produced for commercial publication in the newspaper he is writing as a journalist. Nice try.

Would the Strib accept another columnist like Nick Coleman or Katherine Kersten raising funds for political candidates and organizations and then writing about political issues? No way. There's your model.

This could all be solved by a disclamer at the end of his political pieces, revealing his frequent fundraising for DFL candidates and organizations, similar to the one Michael has chosen to do for his posts regarding the Kennedy/Klobuchar race.

Well, to start with:

Sid Hartman is a journamlist.
Garrison Keillor is not.

Sid Hartman WORKS for the Star Tribune.
Garrison Keillor does not.

Sid Hartman's work appears in the news section.
Garrison Keillor's work appears in the opinion section.

Can someone explain how Garrison Keillor gets away with hosting all these DFL fundraisers at his home while he also writes political columns critical of Republicans in the Star Tribune? Is this not a journalistic conflict of interest?

When Sid Hartman, a sports columnist at the Star Tribune, lent his name to a fund raising dinner for the University of Minnesota (an entity which Hartman writes columns about), the reader's representative at the Strib harshly criticized the conflict of interest inherent with Hartman helping raise funds for the University. Yet I have heard none of this conflict of interest scrutiny mentioned as it involves Keillor and the DFL party and its candidates.

Did I miss something here or does the Strib just have a double standard as it involves the DFL party?

Al Franken is not an angry liberal??? Tell that to Laura Ingraham. As memory serves, Al was supposed to go on Laura's radio show during the 2004 Republican National Convention and then chickened out. A confrontation ensued, captured by MNGOP Communications staffer Randy Wanke and posted on none other than the Drudge Report. Here is a link to Angry Al.

Apparently, Stuart Smalley wasn't good enough or smart enough to appear mono to mono with Laura Ingraham.

Yes, Al is angry. Lots of reasons to be angry.

Al is pretty gracious guy. I'm sure he's appreciative of your complimentary characterization of him as a liberl.

From dictionary.com:
Liberal: Not limited to or by established, traditional, orthodox, or authoritarian attitudes, views, or dogmas; free from bigotry.
Favoring proposals for reform, open to new ideas for progress, and tolerant of the ideas and behavior of others; broad-minded.
Of, relating to, or characteristic of liberalism.
Liberal Of, designating, or characteristic of a political party founded on or associated with principles of social and political liberalism, especially in Great Britain, Canada, and the United States.

That should be Minnesota State at Mankato--though in those days it was the Mankato State Teacher's College.

Ron Carey certainly is angry about people in Minnesota helping Walz.

Gee, I was born in Mankato, went to school in St. Peter's public schools, and I never get that worked up about Keillor or Franken. Franken's mentor, Dudley Riggs, got his teaching certificate at Minnesota in Mankato (shortly after he quit the circus to join a family, if I recall correctly).

Could be worse.

Michael, you need to set Ron Carey straight. You saw how nice everyone was at the convention, we are not angry at all. But if that is the best he can come up with: score one for the good guys.

Hey Zquid, can't you read? The statement explicityly reads that Walz plans on campaigning at a PARADE with Franken, not a fundraiser.

I've checked with everyone I can and no one has an evidence that Walz did a fundraiser with Franken. Where is the MN GOP getting that? Also, I think someone should point out that in the Mankato Free Press Gil's campaign manager compared Rep. Gutknecht to a rockstar. Gil is the farthest thing from a rockstar.

From a guy who works for Mark Kennedy, a guy who brags about being 7 percent independent, and 93 percent lapdog, I don't see how this is much of rebuke.

If you want to debate his politics through the independent lens, that is fine, but to question his desire to raise the money he needs to take on a well-funded incumbent, you are just not getting any traction.
