AP: HATCH LASHES OUT AT STAR TRIBUNE FOR STORY NOT YET PUBLISHED #2
By Michael B. Brodkorb | July 24, 2006
IMHO: I believe Mike Hatch is attacking the Star Tribune because they know Hatch has been less than honest about his involvement with Matt Entenza's downfall. Hatch is trying to inoculate himself from future press attacks and he is trying to intimidate the press.

After his triumph over Entenza, I now see a Barney Fife on steriods! And it looks as if he just shot himself in the foot.
Oh yes, the fun has just begun!

Hatch has been less forthright than even Entenza throughout this whole scandal. He is obviously doing what Hatch always does, using intimidation tactics to put fear into the media (this time) not to push this any further.
But there is no way that the Trib or the Press is going to be intimidated by this guy.
The fact is that Hatch has unanswered questions from Entenzas fall from grace that now more than ever he needs to be open about.
The most important of which is: did Mike Hatch use his official office in his official capacity under false pretenses to learn that Matt Entenza had hired a PI to dig up dirt on him?
If the answer to that is yes or even sort of, Hatch is truly done.
July 24th, 2006 at 6:15 PM
Are you kidding me?
I knew we made a mistake when we endorsed this guy. Hatch has a checkered history of this kind of stunt. As Attorney General there have been rumors of him being over bearing and intimidating beyond his authority.
It appears this is the same old Hatch.
Entenza went down because he couldn’t tell the truth. Hatch would be well served coming clean rather han trying to bully the press.

Hatch isn’t winning any points by blowing his top before the story comes out. What did he expect to accomplish by this?
July 24th, 2006 at 6:31 PM
More loose accusations, with not a shred of proof even offered.
Where’s the beef?
July 24th, 2006 at 6:58 PM
When will we see the e-mail sent to Hatch by Strib reporters, and Hatch’s letter to the News Council? One just wonders what all the fuss is about!
July 24th, 2006 at 7:31 PM
I’m surprised about this as hatch has leaked so much stuff to the star-trib in order to get lots of favorable treatment from them. The star-trib has always been quick to give hatch a heads-up when someone in his office writes them detailed but anaonymous letters about his shenanigans and they just fax those letters right back to hatch. Looks like he’s biting the hand that feeds him. And just so he can run interference for the princesses- again!
July 24th, 2006 at 9:39 PM
Should we be surprised that a guy who keeps a Nixonian “enemy’s list” would stoop to trying to intimidate the state’s largest newspaper?
July 24th, 2006 at 10:05 PM
none of this makes sense…
Which is why it could only happen with the DFL.
I can see Hatch loose the election and then turn around and face the public saying, “Well, you won’t have Mike Hatch to kick around anymore” shaking an angry fist.

OK- I’m through drinking my homemade hooch, its starting to affect my reading.
You guys are defending the Strib as credible and right on even without knowing the story. You are clear that they are within their right so much that you’re standing strong in defense of it?
So family and rumors are fair game?
So I can talk about Jim Ramstad being gay and just getting married a few months ago to cover his butt?
What about the special treatment Kline has afforded his kid in military?
Or Mark Kennedy’s horrible family finances in the early and mid 90s?
Rod Grams, albeit a true conservative, cheated on his wife, employed his mistress and neglected his family until the son was so out of control, he became a burden on the taxpayers.
Did you hear the one about Alan Fine?
You know, I made everything up- except the Rod Grams deal. I can’t use this analogy, it makes me feel a little too slimey. Drop it.
Family should be off the table.

I’d like to see a copy of the email from the Strib reporters.
It’s amazing how few politicians understand the first amendment. Ironically Mike Hatch sounds alot like George Bush. Both try to use their office to bully the press.
Here it is:

The PP has now posted the Hatch letter to the News Council and the original e-mail to Hatch from Strib reporters Smith and Kazuba. The Hatch letter to the News Council is classic misdirection, as Hatch did not, and has not, addressed the substance of the Strib inquiry — (1) did Hatch lie to law enforcement about why his vehicle was illegally parked at the overlook, and (2) was there a confrontation of some sort involving Hatch family members that resulted in serious vandalism to property? To argue that such issues are not relevant to a statewide election campaign is naive’.

Folks, I hate to break it to everyone but this is going to be a very boring election. If Hatch can’t lead in a poll where Klobuchar is up +19, he’s never gonna win.
And Republicans, sorry, Mark Kennedy “the man who will change Washington” is not going to fly.
Klobuchar by 8 points
Pawlenty by 12 points
Yawn….

I just want to ask Gary Gilson the DFL shill who runs the Minnesota News Council one thing: WHY WON’T YOU GRANT HATCH’s REQUEST FOR A HEARING BEFORE THE COUNCIL ? The reason you won’t is because he’d look like the dictatorial fool that he is! And HATCH’S charge that THE STRIB is pro
PAWLENTY is the BIGGEST LIE he’s told in a campaign that the DFL has filled with LIES !!!

ALSO DFLers and the STRIB: BECKY LOUREY IS AN
ALTERNATIVE FOR YOU !

I think it is hillarious that y’all suddenly jump to the defense of the Star Tribune when it is doing something you agree with. Which is it? Is it the Red Star, or is it a great bastion of free-flowing information?
That being said, Mike Hatch was wrong to file this complaint. The News Council NEVER takes up cases pre-publication, and the fact that he threatened as he did all but forces the Star Tribune to do the story now. There are good ways and bad ways of doing things. Mike Hatch F-ed this one up big time.

People who type in caps are mentally unstable or something like that. One of two words to emphasize importance is ok, but to shout through a rant makes you seem a bit unstable.

“I think it is hillarious that y’all suddenly jump to the defense of the Star Tribune when it is doing something you agree with. Which is it? Is it the Red Star, or is it a great bastion of free-flowing information?”
It’s similiar to a witness if you are on trial for something. Someone who is hostile to you is called as a witness and supports your position has more credibility in this particular time then someone who is your friend.

DJZ mentioned the Rod Grams case. As we all remember, the media chased his son Morgan from MN to New Mexico and back reporting on his criminal activity every step of the way. (This while ignoring serious issues about Grams’ opponent which probably lead to Dayton’s decision to retire.) Why should Hatch receive any different treatment?
July 25th, 2006 at 12:40 PM
The media did not chase Morgan Grams anywhere. They reported about his crime here. They reported about his crime when he was arrested in New Mexico.
If speeding tickets are fair game, having a son who abducts a minor and takes her half way across the country to smoke crack should be equally fair game.
July 25th, 2006 at 1:21 PM
OK Chris.
Morgan Grams kept using his expired US Senate ID and pass to try and get out of trouble. It is news when kidnapping and grand theft is involved- over something that is becoming too common like minor drug possession or DUI.
The kid brought in the media. Yelling “My dad is Senator…” is a helluva lot different than pulling out ID. A bar fight is different than kidnapping. A DUI is different that gardn theft.
And- running on family values, while living a life of sin (boning your help while married), opens the door to that kind of investigation.
You guys are scared shitless of Mike Hatch and I love it.
Oh, Dayton dropped out because he wouldn’t do the work for fundraising and refused to put forth his own money. Either way, he left and Grams got bounced- twice.
July 25th, 2006 at 5:28 PM
The media chased Morgan Grams, an adult, across the country to New Mexico. Apparently R and DJZ think that was appropriate coverage. Then they shouldn’t have a problem with questions being raised about Hatch’s daughters and their run-ins with the law.
Morgan Grams did try to use a Senate family member pass to get out of trouble. Interestingly, Rod Grams didn’t lift a finger to get his son out of the legal trouble he faced. Morgan said that if his father didn’t make him go to jail, he would probably be dead today. Contrast this with the treatment Hatch’s daughters received after they assaulted a cop in Chicago and damaged the squad car. I guess that’s off limits though.
July 26th, 2006 at 12:31 AM
Chris-
Silly conservative. When are you going to learn that the law (and media) don’t give a hoot what crimes the DFL commmits in this state.
they get a free pass as long as nobody bothers to look hard enough.
Entenza got caught cause somebody (most likely Karl Rove) sent out evidence of election finance fraud.
Hatch will come away smelling like roses once the strib realizes that they are helping get a Republican elected by persuing a story. (they dropped it like a bad habbit last time when hatch’s daughters got into trouble in Chicago…not likely that story will see the light of day again at the strib)
What, you thought the media in this state care about facts?
Keep dreaming.
