ATTENTION READERS OF MDE: WATCH “AT ISSUE” ON SUNDAY TO SEE AD ABOUT 5TH CD
By Michael B. Brodkorb | August 18, 2006
A little bird told me to recommend that readers of Minnesota Democrats Exposed should tune into "At Issue" Sunday morning with Tom Hauser on Channel 5 at 10 a.m. There's a commercial airing about the 5th CD we aren't going to want to miss.

So, what’s the dirt Mike? I’m out of town on Sunday. Spill the beans!
August 18th, 2006 at 3:31 PM
If it’s Congressional related, I hope it’s Dem on Dem. What point would it be for the Republicans to do something?
August 18th, 2006 at 3:42 PM
Is Ember spending her Emily’s list cash already?
August 18th, 2006 at 3:54 PM
I haven’t seen the ad. I’m going out on a limb here.
August 18th, 2006 at 4:27 PM
You hear talking birds?
Gonna have to start questioning what you put here, MDE.
August 18th, 2006 at 4:30 PM
As much as I love politics, I seriously doubt I’m gonna drag my butt out of bed on a Sunday morning to see it. I’ll wait and read about it later in the day.
I suspect whatever the ad is, it’s aimed at the hard-core political activists for it to be broadcast on that show at that hour.
August 18th, 2006 at 4:31 PM
I also see dead people.
August 18th, 2006 at 4:41 PM
I see Paris …. I see France ….
August 18th, 2006 at 4:42 PM
I really hope ERJ is going to re-run her “Where’s Billy?” ad from 1998!!
August 18th, 2006 at 5:35 PM
“I also see dead people.”
Yeah, but that’s an old trick now. Hearing talking birds tends to be a big deal mostly during election years. Scientists have yet to figure out why that is.
August 18th, 2006 at 11:39 PM
KSTP showed part of a Paul Ostrow TV ad on the 10 pm news… seemed to be slamming Ellison (without naming him) on the issue of law enforcement.
August 18th, 2006 at 11:48 PM
Hey! Channel 5 did a story on it on the 10pm news – there was a clip. It’s Ostrow plugging a parking meter while talking to his mom on a cell phone saying “I always do the right thing, mom.”
It’s hysterically funny & a bit subtle going after all of Ellison’s foilbles. I can’t believe Paul had the nerve to do this. The race has been so dull, and now finally something to talk about.
Really cute ad and totally unexpected. I’m dragging myself out of bed to watch the whole thing on Sunday.
August 19th, 2006 at 8:28 AM
You mean Ostrow’s lame ad with him talking to mommy then feeding the coin to the parking meter (see, I’m not Keith Ellison!) I prefered the pandering Ostrow to the sanctimonious Ostrow: when he was at the Temple Israel debate and mentioned that some of his great grandparents were Jewish.
August 19th, 2006 at 11:37 AM
Surely it is the full Ostrow ad. Ellison and Erlandson don’t have ads prepared yet, Ember RJ has an ad according to her mailings but won’t show it for another week. Someone needs to make something of Ellision tax record.
August 19th, 2006 at 11:56 AM
You’re right, Dave Dem. Ellison should do an ad of himself getting his license revoked or getting a certified letter about the tax lien on his house. Oh – wait, he doesn’t pick up that kind of mail, but I’m sure he’ll still be an on-the-ball lawmaker.
At least Ostrow has the stones to point out that the endorsement committee picked an emperor sans clothes. No other candidate is doing it.
August 19th, 2006 at 12:15 PM
If these stories about the Ostrow story ad is true, it’s just sad. I know Paul personally, and always thought he was a stand up guy. But attacking another Democrat just because you’re in behind in the race? It’s not needed and won’t help Ostrow a bit in his own race.
August 19th, 2006 at 12:40 PM
I heard an OSTROW radio ad it refers to what a
cesspool of crime MPLS. has become and that Ostrow is the only candidate that is talking about it! Noah, why don’t you guys wake up ?! What
DO YOU THINK THE LIEBERMAN-LAMONT THING IS ALL ABOUT ?
August 19th, 2006 at 1:15 PM
Before you bash Ostrow’s “mommy” be aware that every dem cause and candidate I’ve supported Hilvie Ostrow has spent hours and hours volunteering. She’s not just the mother of the candidate, she is a an activist in her own right & deserves the respect of the party.
August 19th, 2006 at 1:24 PM
Noah: It’s a PRIMARY and that is what candidates do – run against each other. Ellison is Ostrow’s opposition. It’s not personal.
I think this ad is going to get some traction because it is witty.
What is sad is that Ellison accepted the endorsement given his numerous foibles.
August 19th, 2006 at 1:54 PM
Noah, please don’t go down the the Brian Hanna/Roving Road. You can still steadfastly support your views and values without sticking up for Ellison each time. This is what is so sad, you are sticking up for someone that really isn’t a solid and good person. He has total disregard for his responsibilities and the law. Just because he is a strong orater on communicating the issues you care about doesn’t mean he is the best person to send to DC. He is sloppy, he doesn’t call back key supporters, and he has serious character flaws that will embarass the 5th district. Don’t bring down the 5th over one man. Two years is a very short time frame to find another candidate.
August 19th, 2006 at 2:22 PM
Meredith: // He has total disregard for his responsibilities and the law. … He is sloppy, he doesn’t call back key supporters, and he has serious character flaws that will embarass the 5th district. //
And you know this… how?
August 19th, 2006 at 5:21 PM
Brian, you are not the only one involved in DFL politics. But you are bringing the rest of us down. I wish you would stop being so dumb
August 19th, 2006 at 6:25 PM
dawnofthedem, did I say anything negative about Ostrow’s mother? No. I think this ad is lame and _Ostrow_ himself using his mother this way in this amateurish ad is sad. Trying to be funny and just looks sad.
If Ostrow can get rolled by the likes of Barb Johnson how’s he going to stand up against the Republicans in Congress who certainly know how to play hardball?
In the end, he gets 10% of so and plays the roll of Gephardt in Iowa (going negative against Dean but not benefiting himself) and may get Ember the nomination instead.
August 19th, 2006 at 7:13 PM
Mmmmmm, it’s dumb to ask for sources, or to state my personal opinions. I see. Sounds a little like “shut up”, which I’d expect from one of the Republicans, but whatever.
Hey Meredeth, if you have another point of view, spit it out. I’m sure these good citizens would love to hear it. I’m sure I would.
August 19th, 2006 at 7:15 PM
Oh, and Meredeth? If you’re really concerned about me exercising my first amendment rights, feel free to call. I’m in the book.
August 19th, 2006 at 9:28 PM
Meredeth says “Brian,I wish you would stop being so dumb”
Brians says “Sounds a little like “shut up—, admitting that the only way he can stop being dumb is to shut up.
August 19th, 2006 at 10:09 PM
Dave Dem -”You mean Ostrow’s lame ad with him talking to mommy…”
If this is you being respectful of a hard working activist who has given 6o years to the party, I’d hate to see you what you’re like when you’re
insolent.
If you’ve got the whole Ostrow thing all figured out why do you seem so threatened?
August 19th, 2006 at 11:13 PM
Still waiting for some substantive answers to real issues… not sure why. Guess I grew up around some real Republicans…
August 20th, 2006 at 6:45 AM
One interesting (and rational) perspective I heard from a mainstream Democratic activist recently: longtime DFL party regulars are scared to death Ellison will survive the barrage of bad news, win the primary, and then go to Washington, where he will do something which will REALLY embarass the state.
He will be a one-term Congressman, having totally emasculated himself, and we will be back to another primary free-for-all in 08.
August 20th, 2006 at 9:26 AM
Brian Hanna,
Get your own blog.
August 20th, 2006 at 11:03 AM
He meant the quarter being put into the parking meter at the end of the ad…
Nice…
August 20th, 2006 at 11:24 AM
“I prefered the pandering Ostrow to the sanctimonious Ostrow:”
I just saw the ad for the first time and had to laugh out loud. Ellison has become a joke and there will likely be other TV ads mocking him for various reasons. The con man is such an embarassment.
I do think it’s funny to see local libs calling Ostrow “sanctimonious” instead of recognizing their own candidate is a loser, criminal con man. I’ll take the sanctimonious candidate over an obvious con man any day.
August 20th, 2006 at 11:27 AM
Of course Ellison’s legal troubles are fair game — in fact it’s a duty of other Dems/media to bring up the fact that Ellison, apparently as a matter of course, does not follow the law. Not suprisingly, voters are very reluctant to give law-breakers the job of law-maker.
August 20th, 2006 at 12:05 PM
Saw the ad, Hilvie Ostrow was a crack-up. I wish all of TV was as clever. I think Ostrow should do a series of ads — adhering stamps onto mail heading to the IRS, signing for certified mail, mowing his lawn…
Had an Ostrow staffer at my door this week, too and got a personal letter two days later addressing my issues of health care and education.
Now it seems that the race is for the “where the support will go after Ellison explodes.” Other than a piece of mail from Erlandson and a giant billboard with a ten-year-old picture of Ember, I haven’t seen much of the other candidates.
The next few weeks should be interesting…
August 20th, 2006 at 12:21 PM
Perhaps people in the district will realize there is a better choice than the three-ring circus that is the DFL.

I stand by my comment.
JIMJ: I have personally heard all the candidates speak about crime in the 5th, for the exception of Ember – she might have said something about it, I just haven’t heard it myself. As for Lamont-Lieberman, it was clearly about Lieberman’s distance from Dem voters in CT on important issues such as the war and health care. There are many ways the L-L race in CT can inform our understanding of the primary race – I’m not sure what you’re trying to get at.
Avg Jane: While I have spoken in support of Ellison in the past, I wasn’t in my comment above. It was a criticism of Ostrow. While I accept that this is a competitive primary and the candidates must run against each other, the description of the ad on this site does not strike me as witty. That’s personal though, and I accept others have a different opinion.
If Ostrow wants to openly call out Ellison’s character as an issue in the campaign, that’s his right. He’s done it in the past during this campaign. My problem with the ad is the allusion to Ellison’s parking tickets. If the issue is so important, address it directly to the voters.
Hope that clears things up!
August 20th, 2006 at 1:19 PM
One other thing on political humor:
If Ellison wanted to defuse this issue, he would come out with an ad saying “I’m a supporter of fiscally responsible government. In fact, I’ve contributed more than my share to balance the city and government budgets – I’ve paid more in parking tickets and back taxes that all of my opponenents combined!”
Now, that’s funny and allows him to follow up with the truth of the issue.
August 20th, 2006 at 3:53 PM
“I’ve paid more in parking tickets and back taxes that all of my opponenents combined!â€
The problem is, if the Con Man said those things we’d doubt he were telling the truth. There will always be doubt that he’s up to date on taxes and tickets.
August 20th, 2006 at 3:56 PM
Who cares? Ostrow has called Ellison unfit to serve twice and now his commercials are aimed at him. Regardless of who wins (Ember or Keith), I take comfort knowing that Paul will come in fourth. He will then make an attempt at Mayor in ’09 and get trumped there too.
His mom is cool and I never made the connection until this commercial.
Someone above called Ellison a criminal and con-man. Is it way too much to ask for an explanation?
Being cynical, I will remind you people we’re talking about sending someone to the most self-righteous, dirty pool-playing, conniving, self-entitiled group in the world- The United States Congress. Nice guys like Ostrow who can’t speak up to ask where the bathroom is will be eaten alive. He couldn’t even hold on to his leaderhsip role in Minneapolis. He got rolled by a Conservative in a liberal town. how many of those colleagues are supporting him now? 1? 2? Out of 13. Ellison has at least 10.

I found the ad!
