AP: GOP ASKS LAWYERS BOARD TO PROBE ALLEGATIONS AGAINST HATCH

By Michael B. Brodkorb | August 23, 2006

"ST. PAUL – Republican Party Chairman Ron Carey on Wednesday asked a lawyers oversight board to investigate whether Attorney General Mike Hatch broke professional rules in a telephone call with a Ramsey County district judge.

The complaint filed with the Office of Lawyers Professional Responsibility was announced at a Capitol news conference by state Rep. Jeff Johnson, the GOP candidate for attorney general, who called Hatch's behavior 'unprofessional' and questioned his integrity.

The issue revolves around a dispute between Hatch and Judge William Leary, who is presiding over two lawsuits from the attorney general's office against debt collection companies.

Leary has accused Hatch of trying to influence how he handled the case in a June 12 phone call, saying the attorney general threatened to take the matter to the media." Source: Associated Press, August 23, 2006

Regardless of the case that was before the court, it is VERY unprofessional to go threatening a sitting judge with blackmail. (“I’m gonna go to the media that will carry the water for the DFL”)

Its one thing if the Judge had done something either unprofessional or against their code of ethics. But, none of those justices showed any sign of unethical behavior.

This is Hatch… get used to it.

I think it is important to note a few facts regarding this incident:
    1) When Judge Leary was allegedly threatened by HATCH his response was IMMEDIATE and CONTEMPORANEOUS, he reported HATCH’S action to Chief JUDGE GREGG JOHNSON,which is the proper way
    to handle the incident.
2)As reported by PAT DOYLE in the STAR TRIBUNE WEDS. HATCH deliberately attempted to mislead
reporters into thinking that he had placed only one 1 Minute call to JUDGE LEARY. He neglected to tell reporters (until he was confronted with the evidence) that he almost immediately placed another call to LEARY(from a different phone) that lasted about 7 minutes in which the alleged threats were made.
3)Apparently PAT DOYLE did too good of a job reporting on the incident, because he was replaced
by CONRAD (DFL) deFIEBRE who probably the most partisan reporter on the STRIB’S very liberal DFL
staff ! In his article today HATCH’S P.R. Flack
and DFL Party CHAIR LYIN’ BRIAN MELENDEZ offer nothing exculpatory on HATCH’s conduct but engage
in their now routine smears on JEFF JOHNSON and
RON CAREY. D.J TICE if you don’t fire deFIEBRE or
the STRIB won’t let you….YOU NEED TO RESIGN !!
