OUCH: LUTHER TRAILS INDEPENDENCE PARTY CANDIDATE FOR AG IN FUNDRAISING
By Michael B. Brodkorb | August 29, 2006
"Two of the three Democratic-Farmer-Labor candidates for Minnesota attorney general — Steve Kelley and Lori Swanson — have far out-paced former U.S. Rep. Bill Luther in fundraising for their high-profile primary election contest.
Monday was the deadline for state candidates to report money they have raised and spent from Jan. 1 through Aug. 21. Candidates were allowed to file their reports by mail or electronically as late as midnight.
Kelley, a state senator from Hopkins who has the DFL Party's endorsement, reported having raised $100,395, and he said he had $77,804 in cash on hand. Swanson, a top assistant to current Attorney General Mike Hatch, said she raised $70,617, including a $10,000 loan from herself, and had $62,476 on hand.
Luther, who was known as a prodigious fundraiser during eight years in Congress, reported raising only $15,050. He trailed not only Kelley and Swanson but also John James, the Independence Party's endorsee. James said he raised $54,265." Source: Pioneer Press, August 29, 2006
