MDE EXCLUSIVE: DISCOVERY OF SECRET HATCH SLUSH FUND?
By Michael Brodkorb | September 25, 2006
Last week, I posted about Mike Hatch Mega-donor James Deal. While looking at his past contribution history, I stumbled across something rather interesting.
In 2003, a non-election year, James and Pamela Deal gave $5,000 to the Lac Qui Parle County DFL committee. In addition, the Lac Qui Parle DFL received just over $30,000 from Twin Cities based donors, most of whom have a long history of contributing to Mike Hatch.
Take a look:
- Daniel Aldridge: $2,500
- James and Pamela Deal: $5,000
- Theodore Deikel: $5,000
- Dennis Hecker: $3,000
- Kelly Hecker: $2,000
- Tamitha Hecker: $2,500
- Michelle Helgen: $1,000
- Albert Hofstede: $250
- Sam Kaplan: $5,000
- Vance Opperman: $5,000
- Andrew Kozak: $250
Total: $31,500 from Twin Cities-based donors, many of whom are long-time Hatch supporters.
Keep in mind, this is a DFL County unit that is considered a solid-blue county in a non-election year that received this money. What did they do with it and what is really going on here?
Lac Qui Parle DFL spent $24,500 with Poligraphics for "printing." There's no further description of what the printing involved. It doesn't say signs or literature, and it doesn't say for whom. Who else has hired Poligraphics in recent years?
-
Mike Hatch for Attorney General spent $4,632.75 at Poligraphics for "printing" in 2001.
-
Mike Hatch for Governor spent $14,092.61 at Poligraphics on 1/6/06 for “printing”
-
State DFL Party spent $15,549 at Poligraphics for "Hatch Lawn Signs" on 7/10/06
Earlier today, I spoke with Carol Webber, who's listed on the DFL Party's website as the chair of the Lac Qui Parle DFL. I clearly identified myself at the begining of the call as the blogger behind Minnesota Democrats Exposed. Weber was "very surprised" and "concerned" about the contributions from prominent Twin Cities donors but couldn't provide me with any answers as to why the Lac Qui Parle DFL would be the recipient of such generous contributions.
I also spoke with the treasurer of the Lac Qui Parle DFL, Allen Simonson. I clearly identified myself at the begining of the call as the blogger behind Minnesota Democrats Exposed. I asked Mr. Simonson about the large contributions from Twin Cities donors and the expenditure to Poligraphics for "printing."
Mr. Simonson said he "was told to pay the invoice" to Poligraphics. I asked who instructed him "to pay the invoice to" Poligraphics, but he couldn't provide me with a name, nor could he tell me why the Lac Qui Parle DFL spent $24,500 at Poligraphics.
I reminded Mr. Simonson that he was the treasurer of the Lac Qui Parle DFL and that he signed the committee's report. He agreed that I was raising "fair" questions, but he didn't have any answers.
This whole seems very strange to me. What is the true story here?

Nice work Mike, and very interesting.
I’m sure the DFL apparatchiks will have a lame excuse by, say 3PM Central. Talking points and all.
September 25th, 2006 at 2:17 PM
Let me beat them to the punch. My guess is that Hatch will blame Matt Entenza for this.
September 25th, 2006 at 2:21 PM
WOW! A County DFL used legal political contributions to pay for printing?
THE HORROR!
And the tie between some rural county and Mike Hatch is that he had also used the same company? Seems to me this is the weakest soup you have ever served on this site.
I know for a fact that Mike Hatch once bought shoe laces at Target, and that some of the shoe laces at Target are made in North Carolina. Does that mean that Mike Hatch supported former North Carolina Senator Jesse Helms’ vote against Martin Luther King Jr. day?

Great Work!!!
Now we have the Kaplan’s in another DFL scandal.
This explains why Hatch does not cross anoyone and file a formal compaint against the criminal candidate Ellison.
The kaplan’s money is speaking to Hatch.
In a quiet, secretive, and hushed manner.
Why does Hatch not say a word about Ellison’s crimminal record. I believe Hatch’s office has SUED Ellison in the past as well.
Does no DFLer come with a spine anymore?

OPPERMAN,KAPLAN AND JIM “Let’s Make a…”DEAL ETC.! Maybe you could get DJZ,Brian Chicken Crap
Hanna, Roving STRIB Disorter and some of the other Lefty Nuts who comment here to help YOU with your investigation MICHAEL ?! You know how they HATE “RICH WHITE GUYS” who contribute to BIG
MONEY TO POLITICAL COMMITTEES !
September 25th, 2006 at 2:43 PM
I HAVE JUST DEMONSTRATED WHAT A TOTAL PHONEY AND
A HYPOCRITE YOU ARE ROVING STRIB DISTORTER! Or are RICH WHITE PEOPLE who give to the DFL excluded from your OUTRAGE !
September 25th, 2006 at 2:47 PM
Well, if Michael, JimJ and Diane all think it is true, it must be. They werre dead on on their post last April about the Easter Bunny and how he is, indeed, am oversized rabbit who gives gifts to good little (non-Muslim) girls and boys.
September 25th, 2006 at 2:50 PM
Opperman is the RICH GUY that organizes this stuff ! He does it so that the PUBLIC and the PIONEER PRESS won’t find out how much CASH,HE and the other “RICH WHITE GUYS” ARE GIVING TO THE DFL !
September 25th, 2006 at 2:56 PM
Jimmy-
I don’t hate rich people giving to campaigns. In fact, I appreciate rich people like these who not only give to campaigns, but admit that they should be taxed more. I do truly despise rich people who give huge sums to campaigns hoping to prevent themselves from having to pay their fair share in taxes.
September 25th, 2006 at 2:56 PM
Get to the Hospital DISTORTER and get some EMERGENCY MEDS ! ANSWER THE QUESTION ! Are the men on Michael’s list “RICH WHITE GUYS” ?
September 25th, 2006 at 3:05 PM
Hugo Chavez (aka Roving Reporter) said there isn’t anything fishy about what happened with the Lac Qui Parle DFL. This is yet another example of DFL activists being like Officer Barbrady “Move along there’s nothing to see here.”
Let’s see: Twin Cities DFLers gave $31,500 to the Lac Qui Parle DFL. The 2000 census says that the population of Lac Qui Parle County is 8,067. That’s $3.90 for every man, woman and child living in that county.
Why would large donors give that kind of money to a small rural county unless someone was coordinating the contributions? Who is coordinating the contributions to Lac Qui Parle County DFL?
September 25th, 2006 at 3:13 PM
Roving likes white rich guys who take out ads in his paper stating how they would like to pay higher taxes. One of which we just signed to build a new stadium for. How is that for Roving’s hypocrisy!! :þ
September 25th, 2006 at 3:17 PM
If I am Officer Barbrady, Chris is Art Bell. “Hey everyone, look over here, it’s a rock. I bet aliens left if here thousands of years ago to tell us about thier life and times. Scientists may try and fool you into believing it is actually just a chunk of pavemnet, but I know in my heart that it is a message from aliens.”
September 25th, 2006 at 3:18 PM
Chris-
Excellent point.
As usual, Roving Retard babbles away and tries to deflect attention from the real story.
September 25th, 2006 at 3:21 PM
Assuming there was some coordination of monies in and out on behalf of a candidate (Hatch) or candidates — and it is still an assumption at best, isn’t this similar to what Tom Delay was indicted for (only using the national committee rather than a county one)?
September 25th, 2006 at 3:50 PM
Wow, an Art Bell reference. How choice. Interesting that you didn’t dispute your real identity Hugo Chavez. Between the socialist tax the rich rhetoric to calling Bush the devil and an alcoholic/drug abuser…you’re parroting everything Chavez says. So keep up your great rhetoric and keep pretending how wonderful your party is.
September 25th, 2006 at 3:54 PM
I am wondering again how the blogger got this information? Would seem that he has someone on the inside, which means that someone is possibly misrepresenting themselves on the local level? I am sorry, but I am not seeing the problem here? There is plenty of examples on both sides where people from the metro give to greater minnesota groups. And for the life of me I still can’t get Diane’s connection to Islam in this???
September 25th, 2006 at 3:59 PM
Hey Nordeaster, are you calling for the indictment of Mike Hatch? Excellent work!!!
September 25th, 2006 at 4:04 PM
Titus said:
There is plenty of examples on both sides where people from the metro give to greater minnesota groups.
And then didn’t list any examples. Give me three examples, Titus. Or at least one anyway.
September 25th, 2006 at 4:10 PM
Focus, focus, now Mr. Brodkorb, you still have to talk about Klobuchar! You can get at least another two weeks of spin out of that one.
September 25th, 2006 at 4:21 PM
To qoote Roving Reporter:
“I do truly despise rich people who give huge sums to campaigns hoping to prevent themselves from having to pay their fair share in taxes.”
What liberal media?
September 25th, 2006 at 5:02 PM
Is Roving Reporter of Spin as dumb as he writes? This is an excellent catch and who’s following this potential illegal slush fund?
September 25th, 2006 at 5:12 PM
What exactly makes this a slush fund?
Hatch is endorsed by the DFL Party. All local units must fall in line and officially support the DFL endorsee. Hatch gets into a hissy fit with the state party guys and instruct his donors to give to the local County Unit. So what? What am I missing?
Unless you’re accusing Hatch of directing how the money is spent, you got nothing. Nothing.
You guys ever think about winning an election on the issues?
September 25th, 2006 at 5:26 PM
What do you think a slush fund is? Perhaps if you get to define the terms and we demonstrate your definitions have been met…..then what’s your next move?
This is an issue; it’s called election laws.
September 25th, 2006 at 5:53 PM
Wow, DJZ, I didn’t know that Hatch was the endorsed DFL candidate for Governor in 2003. Only in the DFL do endorsements go backwards. But then again, the DFL is backwards so I guess it fits.
September 25th, 2006 at 8:53 PM
Chris, weren’t you supposed to be eating your hat or something on a corner if Keith Ellison won the primary?
2003? Who cares? He’d just got re-elected to the Attorney Generals office (by more votes than anyone else that year).
You got something from this year? Then we can talk.
September 26th, 2006 at 5:49 PM
Actually, DJZ, I’m eating pretty good on this Keith Ellison stuff. I’m glad that your party is showing the American people how radical you are. I never said that the DFLers in Minneapolis wouldn’t vote for Ellison. I did ask in the event that Ellison lost whether he would blame whitey and the Jewish media like Cynthia McKinney did.
