STAR TRIBUNE: POGEMILLER AIMS TO BE NEARLY INVISIBLE

By Michael B. Brodkorb | December 1, 2006

"The governor held forth at his press conference. Republican legislative leaders weighed in as well. But when it came time for leaders of the newly dominant DFL majorities to respond to the big state budget surplus forecast this week, one important figure was conspicuously missing: Larry Pogemiller, the brand-new majority leader of the DFL Senate caucus.

He was the top dog that didn't bark.

Pogemiller, elected by his colleagues to one of the most powerful posts in state government, was actually in the Capitol building but chose not to play the traditional role of chief public spokesman for his caucus. And he says he plans to cut an unusually low profile throughout the session ahead." Source: Star Tribune, December 1, 2006

Earlier this week, I wrote about Pogemiller's absence at the DFL press conference.

I also agree with Senator Day's analysis on why Pogemiller is hiding:

"Former minority leader Dick Day, R-Owatonna, agreed with Senjem that Pogemiller's lower profile is a smart move, but offered a somewhat less charitable view of his motivation. 'It's pretty obvious to me that the reason he's doing this is he doesn't like to be in front of a group of people he can't control,' Day said. 'He knows he's viewed as a cantankerous kind of guy and he's trying to shed some of that. … It's probably a good move on his part.'" Source: Source: Star Tribune, December 1, 2006
