MDE FROM THE ARCHIVES: FRANKEN USED ACID ON SNL

By Michael B. Brodkorb | December 14, 2006

"Drugs were everywhere. Chase used a real joint for a prop on camera during a marijuana sketch and, the authors say, Garrett Morris spent his last couple of seasons on the show free-basing cocaine in his dressing room. Al Franken and Tom Davis, writers in the early days and coproducers of the program now, used LSD on the premises while writing a Nixon sketch, according to the book. The band's dressing room was such a recreational drug center that it became known around NBC as 'the departure lounge.'" Source: The Washington Post, February 25, 1986,

I don't think most Minnesotans use acid during the workday.  Good luck Al, you'll need it.

I’m sure Fecke and the rest of the black helicopter nuts will be posting shortly about Bush’s acid use. These clowns love to make stuff up.

Franken will need hallucinogenics if he decides to run for this seat. That’s the only way he’ll be able to see any support for himself.

Living in the Minnesota 5th CD, I just don’t hold any faith in most Minnesotans to care much about personal flaws so much that it would influence their vote. I’d wager money that the local press won’t ever mention the drug use and if it gets use in any campaign literature or ad against a hypothetical Franken it will get reported as “smear tactics”.

It’ll be fun though when Al has a meltdown or says a freak statement to blame it on an LSD flashback moment though… :)

For him to be such a weak candidate, you guys are certainly spending a lot of time trying to dis-credit him. A lot of time.

  4. Jeff Says:
    December 14th, 2006 at 10:53 AM

DJZ, hey, it’s slim pickens now after November, you can’t blame Michael for that.

  5. Dave Says:
    December 14th, 2006 at 11:40 AM

The reason Michael has so much time on his hands is because Karl Rove’s been too busy lately, completing his latest plan. Here’s a hint: Tim Johnson was perfectly healthly…yesterday.

  6. North Says:
    December 14th, 2006 at 12:20 PM

For him to be such a weak candidate, you guys are certainly spending a lot of time trying to dis-credit him.

We’re just discussing his own discrediting. He discredits himself every time he opens his mouth or writes a diatribe, uh, book.

The only joke he’s every done that was funny was himself.

  7. Dumbing it Down For the Left Says:

The interesting thing Dave, is that some people actually believe that sort of stuff.

My assumption is that we will see that argument made throughout the Left-wing blogosphere very soon.

I bet Rove also went back in time and made Franken snort all sorts of coke and drop all sorts of acid so that it would define his candidacy against Coleman.

Very clever and resourceful that crazy Karl.

  8. Tim from Woodbury Says:
    December 14th, 2006 at 1:27 PM

Al Franken must be scaring the hell out of you.

  9. Dave Says:
    December 14th, 2006 at 1:51 PM

Is the VRWC scared as hell at Angry Al? No. More amused than anything else.

Just as Mikey Hatch was a ticking timebomb, waiting to implode his campaign…so will it be with Angry Al. Its only a matter of time.

  10. Johnny Rotony Says:
    December 14th, 2006 at 2:11 PM

Well you probably would need to take acid too, if you were trying to turn Nixon’s horrific policies into humor. Only in a distorted reality could Nixon make sense.

  11. Mike Grimes Says:
    December 14th, 2006 at 2:18 PM

I’m pretty sure Norm Coleman has done drugs too, and really I don’t know that I would really want to vote for someone who has never did drugs, unless they can explain why that lack of real life experiance is a good thing.

  12. JOB Says:
    December 14th, 2006 at 3:05 PM

Mike, only a liberal could make a rationalization like that.

  13. Dave of the VRWC Says:
    December 14th, 2006 at 3:11 PM

Not all of Nixons policies were bad. Read Golda Miers autobiography. She credits Nixon with saving Isreal in 1973.

  14. Sean Says:
    December 14th, 2006 at 3:23 PM

“I don’t think most Minnesotans use acid during the workday.”

But after work… whoooooooooooooooohoooooooo watch out! Dropping blotter paper on the way home, sitting around those cold winter nights after a long day at the office, is there anything to do really except trip?

    Sean

  15. Pat Smith Says:
    December 14th, 2006 at 4:04 PM

I don’t think you “need” to do drugs as a “real life experience.” There are plenty of people who live “real” lives without using drugs.

But I agree with Mike, Norm Coleman was a hippie back in the day. I bet he did every kind of drug there was. If Norm tries to use this drug use against Al, you know there will be former hippies coming forward saying, “I dropped acid and then smoked hash with Sen. Coleman on June 17th, 1969…”

I’m not saying Al is the best or even a good candidate (I will be looking at ALL the candidates), but as long as he can demonstrate the acid and coke haven’t affected him today, I’d be willing to vote for him.

  16. Kyle Says:
    December 14th, 2006 at 4:13 PM

Nixon was an excellent president, by most every measure. He had one heck of an exit from office, but to say his policies were horrific is to not know what you’re talking about.

  17. Mike Grimes Says:
    December 14th, 2006 at 5:33 PM

Norm Coleman did drugs as did George Bush. If you want to hold that sort of thing against people go for it, but it’s not a liberal conservitive thing, it’s a life experiance thing. Theres a great argument for simply disqualifying those that have done illegal drugs, but if your simply going to be partisan in regards to drug use then it simply means you couldn’t care less about the issue. There are so many ways to bash Franken, given the sitting Republican president as well as the majority of modern politicians I just don’t think citing drug use gets you to far.

  18. The Lady Logician Says:
    December 14th, 2006 at 9:10 PM

Personally, I don’t think past recreational drug use is that important of an issue. I mean if they were still using, maybe but 30 years ago – no.

FWIW the worst I did was smoke cigarettes and drink beer and wine. Never did illegal narcotics at any time. Too much of a Miss Goody Two Shoes at the time…..

  19. swiftee Says:
    December 14th, 2006 at 9:26 PM

    New anti-drug billboard:

    This is your brain..

This is your brain on acid

  20. Othelmo Says:
    December 14th, 2006 at 9:53 PM

Hmmm. Franken dropped acid. It makes a lot of sense given his erratic behavior.

  21. Dave of the VRWC Says:
    December 14th, 2006 at 10:39 PM

I still haven’t seen any documentation the W did drugs. As soon as you Dems provide that I will provide the proof the Clinton killed Vince Foster.

  22. paulp Says:
    December 15th, 2006 at 3:46 AM

mike grimes i think you are the only sane person to post on this topic. if i ever meet you i’ll buy you a beer.

by the way mike, you getting any money from the coleman campaign for consulting?

  23. Kyle Says:
    December 15th, 2006 at 7:20 AM

Mike Grims, join DJZ in his hunt for some evidence to back your claims. Otherwise, shut up.

  24. North Says:
    December 15th, 2006 at 8:39 AM

Al Franken must be scaring the hell out of you.

I’m trying to figure out why the simple act of relating information about this Lying Liar is being afraid of him.

Far from it. Bring it on. I pray every day that he’s the DFL candidate.

Norm Coleman did drugs as did George Bush.

Direct from the DFL talking points sheet.

Of course, as we know, they just make this stuff up as they go along. This is the “he did it, too” play.

  25. JOB Says:
    December 15th, 2006 at 9:49 AM

I think the bigger issue here is that Franken is essentially ‘bragging’ about his drug use – and it seems quite extensive over a very long period – certainly more than just recreational – sounds like habitual use.

I’d bet dollars to doughnuts he’s still smoking the stuff? What do you think?

  26. Jeff Says:
    December 15th, 2006 at 9:59 AM

you righties wouldn’t believe that W did cocaine if he snorted it off your chest

  27. jimj Says:
    December 15th, 2006 at 12:25 PM

Franken’s only job will be to smear Norm Coleman
for the next 2 years! He will only run if a more
viable candidate can’t be found !

  28. Bryan S. Says:
    December 15th, 2006 at 1:09 PM

If George W. Bush didn’t do cocaine, Bill Clinton didn’t inhale.

  29. Anon Says:
    December 15th, 2006 at 3:05 PM

JOB — Coleman bragged about how conservative kids didn’t know “how to [fornicate] and get high” like he did in college. Sounds like bragging to me. Source: City Pages

Kyle — There is tons of evidence that Coleman used drugs when he was younger. See the above statement and the fact that he was a roadie at Woodstock. Source: The New York Times

  30. Dumbing it Down For the Left Says:
    December 15th, 2006 at 3:13 PM

    Bryan, Jeff, DJZ, etc. etc.

    Just show us the evidence.

We know Franken did the stuff. We can see his own words. Bryan S, we know Clinton said he didn’t inhale.

Our only evidence that George Bush did coke, is you guys.

And rather than providing proof, you just repeat it.

Now we all know that you folks on the Left believe lots of stuff as long as it is repeated enough, but we’d like some real proof.

  31. Kyle Says:
    December 15th, 2006 at 6:48 PM

Anon — keep up wit the conversation. I wasn’t talking about Coleman.

If you can’t keep it straight, then shut the hell up.

Outside of that, the only thing Stuart Smalley’s use of drugs does for me, is provide some additional context for his mental instability.

Franken is an idiot. He’s not funny, and he’s not a nice guy. Why would anyone want to vote for him?

  32. Mike Grimes Says:
    December 15th, 2006 at 9:34 PM

You are correct I can’t prove George Bush used cocain, nor can I prove OJ Simpson ever killed anyone.

I do know George Bush abused alcohal in the past, as a lot of us have, I do know he denied coacain use during a certain time frame, but has never denied he has done it over the course of his lifetime.

Bottom line drugs are a major part of the American culture, some of them are legal, some are illegal. If all our leaders simply approach the drug issue as a legal issue things will not change for the better. Theres a reason a lot of recovered adicts are part of the treatment process, it is because experiance of all forms matters.

You don’t have to be proud of your experiance to have an advantage over someone who lacks that same experiance. By the same token those who have stayed away from drugs (if you have ever had 5 beers in one night you haven’t by the way), should run proudly on that experiance.

  33. Newt Jr Says:
    December 17th, 2006 at 4:43 PM

The hell with the Star Trib – Franken will be toast in the hands of Rove creative team. I could write 5 career-killing TV spots right now without any effort.

  34. San Soucri Says:
    December 26th, 2006 at 2:54 PM

Franken does LSD the President does Coke.

Products of their time…I wonder how many people on here have lived a virtous life. And by Virtous I mean a boring life, one without ever stepping out of the box (does have to be about drugs either)
