POLITICALLY VULNERABLE WALZ TO GIVE DEMOCRATIC REPONSE TO BUSH’S RADIO ADDRESS ON SATURDAY

By Michael B. Brodkorb | January 11, 2007

According to City Pages, Walz will have a busy couple of days:

"Now, in the wake of President Bush's recent announcement of a troop 'surge' in Iraq, the freshman from Mankato is taking center stage on the national scene. Tomorrow Walz will be a guest on 'Hardball' with Chris Matthews on MSNBC. Saturday, Walz will give the Democratic response to President Bush's radio address." Source: City Pages, January 11, 2007

But Walz said last evening that Democrats have no solution on Iraq:

"He [Walz] said Democrats have 'no set solution [on Iraq], just the ability to thin through it logically to try to find a solution.'" Source: The Journal, January 11, 2007

Remember, the Democrats have already labeled Walz politically vulnerable and his selection to give the Democratic response to President Bush's radio address shows how vulnerable the Democrats think Walz is.

So, Sen. Reid said today, in response to challenges to Democrats to put their own policy proposals on the table rather than just bitch about the Administration’s policies, that it’s not his or the majority’s job to make such proposals.

So the bitch because they don’t like the current strategy. The bitch because they don’t like the change to the strategy. They bitch because they don’t think they were adequately consulted about changes to the strategy. And it’s also not their job to have an alternate strategy.

WTF was just elected to run the Congress and Sentate. WTF!

So much on Walz… is there a potential challenger already?

And has this challenger pulled a Kennedy and bought some blog-time from you?

And in that case, why would Walz be ‘vulnerable’?

Maybe Walz will explain what the democrats plan for Iraq is. They are great at being critical of anything our President says or does, but they never really have a plan of their own (except for Keith Hakim Ellison).

“Walz is one of 12 newly elected Democrats that Speaker-designate Nancy Pelosi and other party leaders singled out for a special ‘incumbent retention program’ for politically vulnerable House members, the New York Times reported today. Democratic leaders will advise members of the so-called ‘Retention Club’ on how to raise money, sponsor prize bills, gain favorable publicity back home and other steps to prepare them for their 2008 re-election campaigns.” Source: Pioneer Press, December 22, 2006

Visibility for a new congressman is nice and creating a high porfile can be good for the district, but for his first national act to do the job of head Bush basher for a day doesn’t seem like the right thing to do. Now for Ellison it would.

Norm Coleman is not supporting the surge.

I’m no Bachmann fan, but isn’t it funny that Bachmann put her arm around President Bush and apparently fully supports the Iraq war and was elected with a comfortable margin. Contrast with Gil Gutknecht and other Republicans who ran away from Bush, stopped supporting the war in Iraq and lost. Maybe Coleman should re-think his electoral strategy.

The big contrast is actually the difference in military experience. While Tim Walz has many years of military service, the same is obviously not true of George W Bush, who spent most of his codpiece career AWOL and finished it as a deserter. Isn’t it interesting that almost every single one of the supporters of escalation has a similar story. Like our rogue president, they were too well connected to see combat in Vietnam. Or like Cheney, they just had something more important to do.

Those who have seen war know better than this awful plan. Same song, second verse. Could be better, but it’s going to be worse.

  9. Chris Says:
    January 12th, 2007 at 1:47 PM

    Charley,

I see you aren’t letting the facts get in the way of your opinions again. President Bush long ago released his military records (something John Kerry, by the way, refused to do). They show that Bush (1) was an excellent fighter jet pilot – rating among the highest of his peers and (2) had more than enough credits to have completed his requirements with the guard. To call Bush a deserter not only slanders the President, but it slanders many others who served in a similar capacity at the time of the President’s service. By the way, when Bush supposedly deserted the military (as you falsely put it), the Vietnam war was already over.

I honor all who served, including Tim Walz. Walz served honorably in a support capacity in Italy during Operation Enduring Freedom.

Now, let’s get to the philosophical argument. You say that you have to have served in a war to be able to manage one. My grandpa served in WWII as did a lot of men from his era. That doesn’t mean I would put my grandpa in charge of a war. Tim Walz has no more judgement or experience than hundreds of thousands of other people. In fact, he has less experience than the guys who are on the ground in Iraq. So don’t play the game that you have to be a veteran of war to know how to conduct the military. It’s simply idiotic.

    Let us face the facts…

If Tim Walz had an (R) next to his name you all would be masturbating to pictures of him.

He has an incredible resume and will do a fantastic job.

Chris, I’m sorry friend but you have been “sold” by the right-wing press.

  11. Jim Says:
    January 12th, 2007 at 4:54 PM

    Chris,

On your last statment: “So don’t play the game that you have to be a veteran of war to know how to conduct the military. It’s simply idiotic.”

I would say that Pres. Clinton was also qualified to run the military, even though all GOP’s cried afoul when he took the helm.

    Logic, the GOP’s worst enemy!

  12. Chris Says:
    January 12th, 2007 at 7:02 PM

    Jim,

You talk about logic and then mention Bill Clinton? Bill Clinton used the military to invade Bosnia, Somalia and Haiti. He used the military to bomb the hell out of Iraq in 1998 during impeachment because Iraq was a threat to the U.S. and had weapons of mass destruction. Where were the kook anti-war lefties? Nowhere. I guess you only like the military when you like which party the president comes from. Logical? I think not.

the letter next to a freshman member of congress name means nothing. All Walz represents is one vote out of 435, he tried to make a name for himself, he ran on being something more then what he actually is, but if you vote one way and are a freshman, you are a nobody.

Walz could do himself and his district a lot of good if he had enough of an independent streak to make the Democrats not take his vote for granted, unfortanatly Walz would have to live a lie to pull that off, and Tim Walz only lies when running for election.

  14. RamseyRep Says:
    January 14th, 2007 at 12:45 PM

Walz tried to campaign as an independent. It only took a few short weeks before Walz showed his true colors as a run of the mill, partisan Democrat.

Tim, enjoy your two years in the spotlight. I have a feeling your chances of re-election are slim and none and slim is heading out of the building.

  15. Jim Says:
    January 15th, 2007 at 9:57 AM

    Chris,

Your argument makes no sense. I’m saying, on your previous comments you made Clinton would have been a qualified Comm in Chief as well. I didn’t say anything about “party” or any attacks that happened. Clinton bombed “al-qaeda training camps” in ’98 at the beginning of his impeachment trial. He did this b/c he saw Osama Bin Laden as a true threat to the US. This is something that Pres. Bush apparently disagreed with upon his inception into the white house because he did not hold 1 meeting on Bin Laden and Al Q until after 9/11.

Yes, Walz did run as a centrist Dem, it has not taken a few short weeks to prove otherwise however. Dem’s won because the country was ready for a different style of leadership and new priorities, Walz campaigned on those priorities. These were things that were mostly included in the Dem’s “100 hours” plan. So now that the first 100 hours are over and the country is moving in a slightly different direction Walz’s independent side will come out when it needs to.

Once again, if Walz had an (R) next to his name you would all consider him some kind of Deity. Look at the ideas.

Oh, and Michael, the Walz website thing, stupid. I look to you for a semi-reasonable conversation on GOP politics. That kind of posting is nonsensical and a tad ridiculous. I assume Walz is your target b/c he is such a good candidate and beat Gil so handidly. Who knows, I would vote Walz for Governor!
