WALZ’S “FISHY” MINIMUM WAGE BILL WILL BE CHANGED BY HOUSE DEMOCRATS #2

By Michael B. Brodkorb | January 15, 2007

I wonder if Congressman Tim Walz aka Congressman FirstName LastName aka Congressman TicketMaster is proud that his first bill needs to be fixed by House Democrats.

Back in December, Walz was sure proud of this "fishy" bill:

"I am proud to co-sponsor this legislation, but I will be even more proud to see it signed into law.  America's working families know this raise is long overdue." Source: Bluestem Prairie

House Democrats have now announced that Walz's "fishy" minimum wage bill will be changed:

"WASHINGTON (AP) – Fending off charges of favoritism, House Democrats say a just-passed minimum wage bill will be changed to cover all U.S. territories – including American Samoa – before it reaches President Bush's desk." Source: Associated Press, January 15, 2007

Did Walz have a role in this corrupt exemption? He owes his constituents an explanation.

Gee, I’ll bet that’s the first time a bill has EVER been amended before it’s been passed…wow, democracy in action.

ABC — it’s being amended AFTER the house passed it. Are you among the legions of dems who comment on this board who can’t follow a story, yet hip-shoot stupid remarks?

YES, but I got a rise out of you, didn’t I?? bwhaaaa – and that’s my goal.

    Got a rise out of you did’nt I. :)

Actually, I knew that already! :)

Seriously though, I can’t figure out why so many of you think Dems (or Reps for that matter) have to be perfect. You sit and wait to pounce on any missteps anyone makes – no matter how trivial – and yes, there are Dem blogs that do the same to Reps. It just seems to me that learning from your mistakes and not repeating them is a GOOD thing. Taking new information, processing it, and rectifying mistakes or changing your course, is a GOOD thing. Something our current president might try, but that’s another post. As a small business owner, if I didn’t modify my business plans and decisions based on changes in the market situation or new information, I’d have been OUT of business a long time ago.

    Let’s keep the comments inbounds.

It seems as though both AIPAC (American Israel Public Afairs Committee) and the Aspen Institute are also being exempted from the prohibition for paying Congressional travel. AIPAC currently funds over $25 million in Congressional travel to Israel. The Aspen Institute has promoted such figures as Dick Cheney, Paul Wolfowitz, Condi Rice, Al Gore, Madeline Albright and “fair and balanced” NYTimes reporter Judith Miller.

My gut reaction is that MB is quite correct to question the ethics of excluding American Samoa here, and to wonder if Nancy Polosi benefited from that Samoa exclusion. My thoughts about Aspen Institute are similar; it sounds like a full-employment program for well-connected political hacks, both Republican and Democratic.

I AM a Democrat, by the way. I have been for decades. I just don’t believe that money should be able to buy a government, Republican or Democrat. At least we should have a vote first.

Lobbyists can’t buy a politician that’s not for sale. As far as this little Samoan “gotcha” is concerned, I am inclined to think it is basically legitimate, but much more entertaining as is. I would be a lot happier if someone would point out the lunacy of the whole minimum wage idea, either as looney leftist pandering, or looney leftist economic theory, or both.

Charley — make mine double. Couldn’t agree with you more. (surprise!) There will be no reform until reforms are made across the board.

Anything less is lip service — or a prolonged game of whack-a-mole. Though, I get the sense that the Dem leadership loves a good game of whack-a-mole.

My problem isn’t with unearthing corruption or conflicts of interest or questioning policies of candidates or elected officials from either party. It’s the denigrating, self-righteous, and smarmy tone that’s used that drives me nuts. It shuts down any opportunity for reasonable discussion. (Although I’m the first to admit I’ve contributed to the negativity and will try to stop acting like a two year old. I challenge others to do the same.)
