PRESS RELEASE: REP. BROD SPONSORS BILL TO CUT STATE INCOME TAXES
By Michael B. Brodkorb | January 16, 2007
ST. PAUL – On the heels of a state surplus projected near $2.2 billion, State Representative Laura Brod (R-New Prague) is authoring legislation that would cut income tax rates for millions of Minnesotans.
"There's a simple reason we have this surplus – our economy is in good shape, and our citizens are overpaying in taxes to the State of Minnesota," Brod said. "The time is right to give our citizens a much needed financial break and pass this significant and ongoing income tax relief by ensuring that many Minnesota families can keep more of their own hard earned money."
Under Brod's plan, the bottom two brackets of wage earners in Minnesota would receive a one-half percent tax cut. Her bill would also reduce the Alternative Minimum Tax rate. While Rep. Brod would like to see additional income tax relief pass, the approach in her legislation is more than reasonable and should be looked on positively by many legislators. These changes would result in significant tax breaks for 2.1 million Minnesotans, and would return $1.043 billion to the taxpayers in Fiscal Years 2008-09, and $949 million in Fiscal Years 2010-2011.
"Though some of my liberal counterparts may disagree, this money belongs to the people, not to state government," Brod said. "It's obvious Minnesotans are paying too much, so its time for lawmakers to act accordingly."

Good for Brod. As I wrote here, Democrats face a choice. Should they choose to not cut taxes, the House will revert back to GOP control.

Laura Brod is dreamy. Not as attractive as Katie Sieben, but dreamy none the less.

Go Laura—finally someone down there attempting to look out for the guy who has to write the checks to this greedy, greedy state government….no amount of money will EVER be enough for it.

I think Sean is endorsing a tax cut.
While an across the board cut would be preferable, given the DFL tax-and-spend majorities, the middle and lower bracket tax cuts make total sense.
The DFL is always talking about compassion for the poor and the forgotten middle class. Here is their opportunity to put their money where their mouths are, or more accurately, put our money where our bills and personal priorities are.
Has the DFL responded yet to this proposal?
Thanks Representative Brod!

“Laura Brod is dreamy. Not as attractive as Katie Sieben, but dreamy none the less.”
So continues the left’s retreat from the tenants of feminism. She is a mom, though, so I guess that makes her qualified to do or say anything.

The republican House minority sought 6-7 specific amendments to the federal tax conformity legislation passed last week. Each amendment would have improved upon the provisions handed down from Washington.
You wouldn’t have heard this in teh press but none of the amendments were allowed to even be heard by the DFL majority. Tony Sertich, the new majority leader smugly declared procedural roadblocks under a procedural point of order under “germaneness”. What shoudl have taken 10 minutes took hours as the democrats reneged on their commitment to let the minority voice be heard.
Had Sertich allowed the amendments to be voted upon there would have been an identical outcome without any of the bad faith demonstrated by the reigning majority.
The republicans did an awesome job of trying to make a good piece of legislation even better. The democrats did a great job of proving why they deserve their majority for one term and one term only.

I hope Rep. Brod actually pursues adoption of her bill, including sheperding it through committee hearings.
That would be a marked improvement over Michele Bachmann, who lists authorship of TABOR on her resume, but declined a committee hearing on the bill.

My stars, is there any subject under the sun that isn’t turned into a wretchedly tired criticism of Michele Bachmann??
If we really wanted to do something besides talk, shouldn’t we be trumpeting DFL’s scurrilous abuses of the process, and their wanton disregard for the poor and middle class?

I hope that Represetative Brod’s proposed legislation is an indication that the republicans have grown a pair. To date they have evidenced the contrary with a hastened retreat from conservative ideals. Stop trying to be moderate and get on with the mission.

[...] January 16th, 2007 • 6:58 pmMinnesota GOP Stepping Up Michael Broadkorb has posted something about Rep. Laura Brod introducing major tax relief for Minnesotans. It’s welcome news that our House GOP isn’t taking their new minority status laying down. [...]

Thank God, we’ve finally found a Republican in the state of Minnesota who knows that cutting taxes is good for the people and good for the economy.

Sean,
In response to your “dreamy comment”. Give me a break. Big differences between Reps. Brod and Sieben. Brod clearly has a brain and gets politics. Sieben… well we’ll just say she has a family name.

Isn’t it amazing that Senator Ortman had a press conference last Thursday and proposed 3 great tax cuts and credits and no one has said a word and the press didn’t cover it at all. I think Brods tax cut is just Ortmans senate proposal from last week.

You expect the press to cover republicans now that we ar ein teh minority?
Fat chance!
