MDE FROM THE ARCHIVES: FRANKEN JOKES ABOUT KILLING OF GAY MAN #2
By Michael B. Brodkorb | January 17, 2007
Click here to read an article from TIME about the murder of John Shivery Knight III. This is the man I believe Al Franken referred to when he said he "was glad when that Pudding homosexual got killed in Philadelphia."
Is laughing at the death of "that Pudding homosexual" a midwest value?

This is huge.
Imagine the left reaction if these words came from a republican.
There would be blood in the streets if a conservative said such awful things about wanting a gay man dead.

Drew, so correct. Really, a comment made 30 years ago…I could forgive it if it isn’t part of a recurring pattern. But it goes back to the double standard. Look at how Michelle Bachmann was attacked by the liberals of Minnesota because of the Lutheran denomination she belongs to. Of course Democratic congressman Kind of Western Wisc belongs to the same one and no cares.
January 17th, 2007 at 3:51 pm
Drew, the correct way to put this is it “should be huge.”
Dems get a pass on racism, homophobia, sexism and a variety of other isms. And anti-Semitism and hatred of Christians is a bonus in some Left-wing organizations.
This will have little or no bearing on whether or not Franken gets the DFL nomination (setting aside the eventuality that this exposure sets off that Franken temper of his and he physically hurts someone, and even then they might not care).

It’s o.k. to be a bigot. So long as you hate the “right” people.

He said something stupid when he was 24. And to top it off, from the newspaper article it seems like he’s being deliberately provocative, and that’s not at all how he feels.
I bet you never did anything or said anything stupid when you were 24.
I bet Norm Coleman never did or said anything stupid when he was 24.
Oh, shit! He did. Sorry. Except he was serious.

“these conservative kids don’t fuck or get high like we do (purity, you know)… Already the cries of motherhood, apple pie, and Jim Buckley reverberate thorough the halls of the Student Center. Everyone watch out, the 1950s bobby-sox generation is about to take over.”
Although it does look as though his dad has that first one taken care of.
Zing!
Sean | Not stupid enough to think that something like “Watch out, the 1980s nintendo playing generation is about to take over.” is profound. In fact, it’s just kind of dumb.
January 17th, 2007 at 4:20 pm
And, just curious Mike, who at the MNGOOP headquarters communications staff gave this to you?
Just curious.
Thats all.
Because your blog isn’t sponsored or approved by any political party or candidate right?

Wow, it didn’t even take Sean a half hour to prove me right.
1) We all likely said stupid things when we were younger that we now regret.
2) Sean happens to say/write stupid things almost everytime he tries to articulate a point.
3) Franken made a joke about killing homosexuals.
Does everyone else see the difference?
Sean, even though you are pretty dim, I suspect you know the difference.
You don’t have to defend every statement by someone who has a ‘D’ after their name you know. You can be a good party guy and admit this is really, really out of bounds.
January 17th, 2007 at 4:27 pm
Shawn: Is this your response? The potential DFL nominee for the U.S. Senate in 2008 joked about the killing of a gay man and the best you can do is ask we where I found this?
Wow…Franken is in more trouble than I thought. Not even you Shawn can find a way to defend him.
January 17th, 2007 at 4:28 pm
Well it looks like he will have the Bachmann vote.
January 17th, 2007 at 4:31 pm
Hey Michael, Is Sean the same Shawn from Checks and Balances? Just curious…
January 17th, 2007 at 4:33 pm
Does this mean that we can count MDE as supporters of expanding State and Federal Hate Crimes laws to include GLBT people?
January 17th, 2007 at 4:44 pm
I missed the post where Michele Bachmann talked about killing homosexuals. Grimes, could you dig that up for us?
Only on the Left could Bachmann’s support for marriage as the union between one man and one woman (a position that Wellstone voted for, and Clinton signed into law, remember) be placed side by side with jokes about killing gays.
And how is “hate crime” legislation relevant?
January 17th, 2007 at 5:02 pm
“Well it looks like he will have the Bachmann vote.”
Actually as a fairly conservative Christian, most likely Congressman Bachmann is against all killing except for those who have committed the worst crimes, and even then only after a fair trial and extensive appeals process.
January 17th, 2007 at 6:13 pm
Michele Bachmann has presided over rallies at the State Capitol where ‘Death to Homosexual’ signs were everywhere.
January 17th, 2007 at 6:37 pm
“Michele Bachmann has presided over rallies at the State Capitol where ‘Death to Homosexual’ signs were everywhere.”
I see…..and so because someone attending a rally held up that sign the proves she believes that? Hmmm…..and that never happens to Democrats – like say Congressman Keith Ellison????

“Michele Bachmann has presided over rallies at the State Capitol where ‘Death to Homosexual’ signs were everywhere.”
Documentation?

I wonder if Franken thought the pistol whipping and death of Matthew Sheppard was comical and worth a skit or two?
I just revisited his comments. He is a sick man.

“Michele Bachmann has presided over rallies at the State Capitol where ‘Death to Homosexual’ signs were everywhere.”
“Reality based community” translation:
Everywhere = 1 sign
“Mark H” obviously crawled out of Eva Young’s Dumpster.
January 17th, 2007 at 7:37 pm
Swiftee — you’re giving Mark too much credit. That never happened.
January 17th, 2007 at 8:01 pm
Franken should answer for this statement. Bachmann has said being gay is part of satan and gays are after children – among many other unhinged things she’s said over the years about gay people.
Here’s some photos from that rally.

There was one Death Penalty for Homosexuals sign – but plenty of other over the top signs.

Call Outfront’s lobbyist – who also works at Take Action Minnesota for comment. You can get his number here:

All of those signs, from the Right or the Left are terrible.
And Franken’s “comedy” about killing gays is terrible.
Sean, do you think jokes about killing gays is:
a) ok if you are a Lib
b) generally funny and acceptable
c) moderately out of bounds
d) unacceptable
Your comments lead me to believe it is either a or b for you.
January 18th, 2007 at 12:08 am
I’m just curious where that comment I wrote up went to.
And it’s neither Dumbing it Down For the Left. BTW. It’s that judging a grown man about something he did 30 years ago is just a good way to do nothing but lower the level of political discourse and open up things that I’m sure lots of people have grown past.

I think it’s funny that Franken’s joke about killing gays (can liberals tell jokes, or are they always “botched”) is being equated with Bachman’s belief that homosexuality is sinful (wow, shock — she believes what 100 percent of Christians, Jews and Muslims believe… shock!)
January 18th, 2007 at 10:59 pm
Yeah. 100%. Are you dense?
January 19th, 2007 at 7:20 am
No, Andy. Not dense. 100 percent. It’s called “a fact.” In fact, I’m unaware of any religion on Earth that holds homosexuality as anything less than sinful.
If you can prove otherwise, I’m happy to hear it.
