I think Drew Emmer is dreamy. The way he can stand up for the gay community when it helps his political agenda, and then grind away on how immoral they are when it doesn’t.

I respect this sort of genuine concern.

I only hope issue two of his terribly infrequent newsletter addresses this important issue. That would give Mike a half dozen post topics, which is something this site desperately needs.

As a representative of the gay community, I would say that’s a false dichotomy. What’s the alternative to the DFL? The GOP. Doesn’t give one crap about gay rights, unless we actually ask for some.

As for Drew’s assertion: My understanding is that MAP was never contacted by anyone, including your brother, Tom. At least that’s my recollection from the Lavender Magazine story on the issue. It’s been a while and Lavender doesn’t archive. But I tend to believe a community-based organization over a legislator with a homophobic axe to grind.

I had plenty critical to say of Mike Hatch. In fact, I was linked by Bordkorb on MDE. Hatch was no supporter of the GLBT community and I called him on it. I would have said the same about Wetterling, but anything is better than Bachmann. So yeah, we support the DFL when the choices are between ‘somewhat homophobic’ and ‘eternal damnation.’

Sadly I doubt the gay community will say anything critical of a democrat. Two years ago MAP had an opportunity to clear up a big problem in their Pride Alive affiliate and they wouldn’t even bother to return calls of sitting legislators.

Direct acknowledgement is apparently not an aceptabel strategy for our friends on the left. The mainstream media doesn’t come close to fulfilling their responsibility to cover these issues.

Separate issue, did anyone happen to see the disgusting abusive behavior displayed on American Idol last night? Where are the advocates for special needs folks? I was appalled to see the joy that was taken in breaking the hearts of clearly disabled people.

On a related note, to say that Franken was only 24 years old when he made his comments about the victim is ridiculous.

At minimum, Franken should address the quote, put it in context, and explain what seems like a shocking lapse in judgment.

At 24, you are an adult, a grown-up, seen as legally responsible. You should be able to explain your adult actions/statements/beliefs–particularly if you believe yourself to be capable of being in the “most exclusive club in the world.”

Instances like this are tantimount to a fork in the road for some in the gay community, particularly organized groups.

Are they for gay rights? or are they for the DFL?

We know what they would be doing if a Republican said these things. But what if it is a Democrat who is listed among the top contenders against a Republican Senator?

I guess we now have our chance to find out.
