AP: COMEDIAN AL FRANKEN WEIGHING SENATE RUN

By Michael B. Brodkorb | January 18, 2007

"WASHINGTON — Al Franken has reached out to Democratic members of the Minnesota congressional delegation in recent days to get advice on a possible Senate run against GOP Sen. Norm Coleman.

It's the latest sign that the 'Saturday Night Live' veteran will get into the race.

'He's called and expressed his interest,' said Rep. Jim Oberstar, the dean of the Minnesota congressional delegation, on Wednesday. 'He said that he's going to be making an announcement.'

Franken, a comedian and radio show host, is mulling a race against Coleman, who is up for re-election next year." Source: Associated Press, January 18, 2007

###

Is Al Franken talking with members of the DFL congressional delegation about when he said he "was glad when that Pudding homosexual got killed in Philadelphia."

Is laughing at the death of "that Pudding homosexual" a midwest value? Please check back to Minnesota Democrats Exposed for more information on this developing story.

Like I said earlier this week–I cannot imagine a scenario where Franken being our Senator would not be a disaster for Minnesota.

Can we honestly picture a set of circumstances where Minnesota would choose another in your face entertainer to represent us? Granted, satiric comedy and wrasslin’ are different animals–but these times seem to demand a level of gravitas that Franken does not seem capable of owning.

Since Ellison skated past any scrutiny (by the DFL or the media) I suppose just about anyone in DFL politics must be looking seriously at the possibility of running for congress or senate.

The story about Franken taking joy in the murder of a homosexual is profoundly disturbing.

Since his profession is all about jokes, innuendo and sarcasm does that mean he will get to skate on all scrutiny by simply declaring “I was just kidding”.

What ever happened to serious candidates that represent what Minnesota is really all about?

I hope Franken runs. If he ends up being the DFL’s man on the ticket I see a ten point win for Coleman. Furthermore, Franken will do his best to look like a total ass, hurting the entire DFL. The only thing better would be Keith X Ellison running for Senate.

Al Franken also played a gay man on Saturday Night Live.

Does this mean he is suicidal?

Drew, that gets to the point about debating and being attacked personally (and in person). Sitting behind a microphone or writing books about how bad Republicans are, really isn’t a tough thing to do (assuming you don’t like Republicans).

Being challenged in person will be new for Al. He’s a smart guy but I wonder how Hollywood will do in a tense situation.

Intelligence is part of the recipe for a sound politician. And I am referring to politician in the highest most noble sense of the word.

Character is a much more precious attribute. We’ll see how he responds to these issues. That will tell us a great deal.

It should be interesting to see if the gay dominanat Star Tribune (they couldn’t seem to figure out that Andrew Cunanen was gay even though they reported on several of Cunanen’s lovers who had obviously gay names (hmm!) That added to the half a dozen major stories on “Ellen” coming out on her TV show. It should be interesting to see how the Star Tribune handles this rather blatent apparent homophobia by Al Franken, the most recently host of a show on a bankrupt radio network.

This is a work in progress but I started a site on the sale of the Minneapolis Star Tribune at (apparently) one-third of the McLatchey purchase price if you subtract the value of the printing plant and the core “headquarters land. It’s complicated. Bloggers and City Pages did a good job on many of the fundamentals. I’ll try to link these stories as time permits.

That said, my thesis is that the hiring and subsiquent behavior of Nick Coleman may have been the “straw that broke the camel’s back” that lead to the seemingly illogical, in a business sense, secret “fire sale of the Star Tribune.

I have reserved http://stribsale.com for future coverage of this. I registered this for five years so this is long term.

The Star Tribune sale will “set the market” for future media sales. They will point to the Star Tribune in future newspaper sales negotiations. There is an industry at stake here.

Outside of the DFL, lefty, democratic, progressive stuff the Star Tribune does a very good job when it isn’t a “water carrier” for the far left wing of the democratic party.

What in the world was the Star Tribune thinking when they hired the ultimate “old school” democratic “political hack” (and for that matter what was the Pioneer Press thinking when it decided Nick Coleman’s (who apparently abandoned the Press Patch) wife was the best columnist the Presspatch could find. Hello! and Hello!

Nothing against Nick Coleman’s wife. I sent her a positve email on a column she wrote on the long term toll of wedding expenses but this field of journalism isn’t exactly “rocket science”. I have no gripe about the writings of Nick Coleman’s wife but this is not the most demanding field of journalism (try finding a journalist who comprends math and accounting)

What was behind the Nick hire and his wife chosen as his replacement at the Pioneer Press, whcih Nick Coleman supposedly “dumped” for the competition. Hmm!

It may take time but I will delve into all of this eventually at http://stribsale.com

    “I was just kidding”

The guy with the “Death to Homosexuals” had a small “I’m just kidding” on the lower part of the sign.

I’m guessing commies wouldn’t believe it if that were true but will believe Franken if he claims it.

    Double standard.

  9. James Says:

“It’s unknown how people will respond to a comedian running for the Senate. I need to figure out a way to let people know I’m extremely serious about Minnesotans and their lives.”

“Their” lives? I think he recognizes he his not even a true Minnesotan, thats why he said “their” lives instead of “our” lives.

I am a lefty and strongly believe this guy would be a horrible canidate for the party.

So in other words Franken said something absurd to the Crimson THIRTY YEARS AGO. Not 20, not 10, not 5, but THIRTY.

I am one liberal who doesn’t really think a Franken candidacy would work, but is this kind of trolling about in Lexis-Nexis all you’ve got?

And could we have a crosstabbed index of everything offcolor said by every Republican between 1976 and 1980? Who cares? besides theres no audio snip of it, so it wouldn’t work on TV spots anyway. If I were him i would have wanted something ridiculous in the Crimson too, because its a bunch of preppie squares anyway…

Franken’s cocaine use in the 70s wasn’t much of a midwest value either, but its not like FOX News talks about Oliver North’s coke smuggling in the 1980s. Lets hash out all the good bits of the 1998 CIA Hitz Report and compare that to Evil Franken’s foibles…
