MDE FROM THE ARCHIVES: FRANKEN ASSASSINATION SKIT DRAWS STUNNED SILENCE

By Michael B. Brodkorb | March 8, 2007

"A group of liberal politicians celebrating the 35th anniversary of the National Committee for an Effective Congress was being entertained the other night in a Washington club by Franken and Davis, the 'Saturday Night Live' comedians. The show was billed as 'An Evening of Fun and Laughter,' but the laughter stopped abruptly when the two comics did a routine in which two politicians started insulting each other vehemently. When one of the actors shot the other with a realistic blank pistol, the audience fell suddenly silent. The comedians noticed it, too, and Al Franken said, 'I can see that this is an audience that doesn't think shooting politicians is very funny.'" Source: The New York Times, May 21, 1983
