AP: TINKLENBERG WEIGHING ANOTHER CONGRESS RUN

By Michael B. Brodkorb | March 9, 2007

"Elwyn Tinklenberg, a former state transportation commissioner, said Thursday he is considering another run for Congress and will make his plans known in the next couple of months.

'You need to get in soon enough to do the work and line up the support and raise the money,' Tinklenberg said.

Tinklenberg was a Democratic candidate in 2006 for the 6th Congressional District seat, but bowed out when his party endorsed Patty Wetterling. She lost to Republican Michele Bachmann in the fall.

Stillwater attorney Bob Hill, a Democrat, has already announced his intention to run in 2008." Source: Associated Press, March 8, 2007

My question is will the 6th District DFL endorse Tinklenberg?

Apparently, Ive read Tinklenberg is pro-life, and is also against gay marriage but pro-civil unions. That is a tough sell for the DFL but if they are smart, they will realize that Michele Bachmann is pro-life, completely anti-gay so Tinklenberg would still be a step up from Bachmann.

I never understand why some Democrats are so against moderate-conservative democrats. Sometimes you have to compromise your own beliefs and pick the person who has the best chance of winning. When Collin Peterson retires, the DFL would be ridiculous to nominate a liberal Democrat, clearly that district needs a moderate-conservative DFL’er. The 6th district clearly needs a moderate-conservative DFL’er to win.

    Who?

The dems will not support a moderate democrat. Elwyn won’t win as a dem. Nice guy. Fat chance in his party.

Why would Tinklenberg run for Congress when he’s making big $$$ off Anoka County government “no bid” contracts? He’s alerady got a sugar daddy.

Bachmann blood in the water and the sharks are already out. Obviously, Tinklenberg is a far better candidate for 6CD than Patty Wetterling – so will 6CD DFL concede its error? Yes. Even the genetically demagogic can be taught to avoid the pain of spectacular election losses. Right, Michael?

If Dr Dre’s allegations are correct, Tinklenberg will have a difficult time running on a culture of corruption campaign – though now that the Democrats are in power, the dems probably don’t want to make that an issue.

Tinklenberg now favors civil unions. When he had his opening press conference, it was reported that he said he supported the Federal Marriage Amendment (which made his position IDENTICAL to Michele Bachmann’s on this issue). I called his campaign, and his campaign staff told me (apparently with Tinklenberg telling them) – that he was supportive of civil unions. However, when I asked whether they were planning on getting a correction in the AP and other media outlets, they said no. Tinklenberg later on came to publicly support civil unions, when he was interviewed on Almanac shortly before the district convention. An oppose gay marriage/pro-civil unions position is inconsistent and difficult to explain. I don’t have problems with that position. However – what is Tinklenberg’s positions on other issues that poll in favor of the gay community – non-discrimination laws and repealing the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy that fires openly gay people from the military.

I’m not convinced that Patty Wetterling was hurt by her socially liberal positions. She was hurt by the way she campaigned. Her TV ads were appalling – and were turning off her base. She took all the hits for supporting gay marriage in the hit pieces going out to the district, but then she also returned a check to the Human Rights Campaign in the Spring, so also hurt her credibility under the radar with gays who had supported and raised money for her.

Bachmann will accomplish nothing on her anti-gay agenda. She was unable to accomplish anything in the legislature (notice that her bills did not pass). If more anti-gay Democrats win races, the Democratic party will run more anti-gay democrats because they are more than willing to throw gays under the bus to win – since all too many gays are willing to be used as an Automatic Teller Machine for the Democrats.
