"No one's talking about this hush-hush event, but I hear Linda Ronstadt was one of the hosts and Robin Williams performed on Wednesday at a private fundraiser for Al Franken's long-off senatorial campaign.
And Susie and Mark Buell are helping organize a fundraiser for D.A. Kamala Harris at Club Fugazi on Monday night, featuring comedian Ron G. According to his bio, 'this electrifying performer has made a commitment to clean humor.' Aw, nuts. Wait a minute, can I say 'nuts' in a family newspaper?" Good thing Norm Coleman doesn’t raise money in places like New York, Los Angeles, Miami…Oh wait, that’s where Norm raises most his money too.
This is going to be a great senatorial election coming up with two New York Jews running for office in a state that is 99% Christian. All that out of state money tramples representative democracy again.

It isn’t about just getting money from out of state – it’s about who is giving the dough. If you think that Robin Williams or Linda Ronstadt represents Minnesota values, I think you’re nuts.

I’m with Chuck on part of this, and Chris, my guess is you are too. Hollywood leftists don’t share Minnesota values, and should have no voice in who Minnesota elects. Campaign contributions should be limited to local donors. And that means cutting out individuals and businesses with no operations in the state.
Moreover, we need to repeal the 17th Amendment.

The founding fathers never intended the direct election of Senators by the people. They intended Senators to be appointed by the States. (That’s why the House of Representatives is called the “People’s House”.)
The 17th Amendment magnified the influence of big-money and corruption in Washington, and severed the ties of accountability between the state and the federal governments.

Unfortunatly, yes. You have to have big bucks and a lot of free time to have a serious run for the US Senate. And because the Senators have so much power (think approving Fed’l judges), many close elections almost become nationalized.

I don’t know. I gave to Thune to oust that asshat Dachal and I never lived in South Dakota. After his 911 What-Did-The-President Know-And-When-Did-He-Know-It claptrap I was physically ill thinking of him in office. I would like to know what people in San Francisco have against Norm and given Norm’s votes does it really matter?

Money IS political speech and nobody should be silenced. I can’t believe you would want to take away the direct vote of the people for Senators. That’s crazy. I actually believe there shouldn’t be any limits to campaign contributions as long as all contributions are disclosed immediately. If George Soros wants to give Frankenfraud a million dollars, he should be able to. It’s better than Soros secretly funding shadow groups who are trying to elect people like Franken with no public disclosure as to their activities.

Crazy or not, but the direct vote of Senators was a Constitutional repair in search of a break. The result is an out of control election system dominated by money, corruption and greed.
Even so, these folks are our representatives. The represent the interests of the State. And I reject the undo influence of non-residents.
I respect your thoughts on the matter though.

I appreciate where you’re coming from. But in all honesty, why would you limit to the U.S. Senate the point about the electoral system being dominated by money, corruption and greed? Wouldn’t you agree that applies to House races, the Presidency and Governor’s races as well?

Indeed Chris, indeed. I focus on the Senate, because it’s the house were 1) the representatives were never intended to be selected by direct election; and 2) Because it is where the power and money is concentrated (it’s easier to buy 100 candidates elected every 6 years than it is to buy 435 up for election every 2 years).
