PIM: “WHEN THE [DFL] PARTY DOES ATTACK, IT OFTEN MISSES THE MARK”

By Michael B. Brodkorb | March 23, 2007

"DFL Executive Director Andy O'Leary has put together a great team as the DFL solidifies its claim that it regained its status as Minnesota¹s majority party. Unfortunately, the  exception has been the DFL communications staff. The DFL's media relations haven't struck the right note since former staffers Bill Amberg and Tonya Tennessen left the party in 2005. When it comes to the DFL and media, it's always difficult to please everyone. But the party critiques of Tim Pawlenty, Norm Coleman and other Republicans have been few and far between for months.

When the party does attack, it often misses its mark. In January, the DFL attacked Senator Coleman for his vote on the minimum wage bill in the Senate. The communications staff incorrectly claimed he voted against it when he actually supported the measure. That left the party apologizing to Coleman and actually giving the Senator positive press on supporting a minimum wage increase.

With DFL communications director Jess McIntosh leaving for the Al Franken for Senate campaign, there is an opportunity to start over by building a communications staff with real press credentials, professionalism and political savvy. In 2008, the DFL will have a top-tier Senate race, a tough reelection campaign for U.S. Rep. Tim Walz, a new House majority in jeopardy and a presidential race. There is too much at stake in 2008. The party needs to move beyond mediocrity and find a capable communications director and media staff." Source: Politics In Minnesota Weekly Report, March 22, 2007

This is an example of the main stream media’s approach to problems in the Democratic camp. In those rare cases when the MSM, as here, criticizes the Democrats for a problem or problems on one hand, the MSM is quick to offer helpful advice to the MSM on how to correct those problems.

If there are similar examples that show that the MSM treats the GOP that way, I have never seen it. Typically, the MSM fires away at what it perceives as GOP problems sans any helpful words of wisdom on how to correct those perceived problems.

However, if there are such examples, I would be more than happy to have someone point them out.

I’m sure the Franken campaign feels very comforted reading analysis like this after recent hires.

Sorry Jack, but that quote is from Politics in Minnesota probably from DFL hack and Nuisance suit expert Blois Olson. (NOTICE MICHAEL AND BLOIS I SAID “PROBABLY”) But it sure sounds like
it could have come from the STRIB, doesn’t it ?

Given Blois Olson’s political affiliation (DFL() and the love affair that the MSM here in Minnesota has with him, he is part of the MSM.
