LIVE-BLOGGING HUMPHREY INSTITUTE’S “CONNECTING WITH GOVERNMENT” SERIES WITH KLOBUCHAR

By Michael B. Brodkorb | April 2, 2007

1:11 p.m.: The speech is over.

1:08 p.m.: Klobuchar said she has most been impressed with Ted Kennedy in the U.S. Senate.  Kennedy, according to Klobuchar, works with Republicans well (hmm….).  She also told a funny story presiding over the Senate and gaveling Ted Kennedy to order.

1:03 p.m.: Jeff Fecke and Tom from Sky Blue Waters (source: Flash) are also live-blogging this event.

12:54 p.m.: Klobuchar brought up "turkey litter" and using animal waste for energy.  There was a small chuckle from the crowd, but I think her point was to say we need to look at everything as a potential source for energy which is a good point.

12:52 p.m.:  Klobuchar's is not opposed to using nuclear energy, but wants to discuss storage issues.

12:46 p.m.: Jacobs asked about balance – how do businesses balance energy efficiency and new technologies with potential increased costs.  Klobuchar said there needs to be balance, but the we need to include the costs if inaction.

12:40 p.m.: Klobuchar's speech is over…Larry Jacobs is now asking her questions and additional questions will be taken from the crowd.

12:34 p.m.:  Klobuchar said she wants the U.S. to lead the world on creating "green" technologies.

12:27 p.m.: Under the headline "Taking Action", Klobuchar wants to do the following: Establish "cap-and-trade" program, create a "Carbon Counter", strengthen energy efficiency and conservations efforts, promote greater vehicle fuel efficiency, promote renewable energy, harness the potential of the agriculture sector to develop renewable energy, lead the international community.

12:24 p.m.:  U.S. Senate candidate Al Franken and his new communications director Jess McIntosh are sitting 10-12 rows behind me. Yes, the Franken post promised earlier today is coming.

12:19 p.m.: I am sitting next to Flash from Centrisity.  Check out his blog for updates on Klobuchar's speech.  As Flash noted, former Vice-President Walter Mondale is in attendance.

12:14 p.m.: The subject of Klobuchar's speech is global warming.  Klobuchar started her speech with an update on her first few months in Washington.  She shared some humorous personal stories about her family adjusting to Washington.

12:12 p.m.: I was invited to live blog Senator Amy Klobuchar's speech at the U of M Humphrey school's new series "Connecting with Government."  I am a horrible live-blogger, but I'm giving it the old college try.

    “College try”?

    I remember college.

I think you should aspire to do a bit better than that.

(Unless you PLAN to get high, play computer games, and go home early . . .)

Carbon capping/trading is wacked. But I agree with her (Dave shudders) on much of the rest.

Oh, but not her views of Ted Kennedy (who was just honored by a women’s group, heh heh).

It would have been great if Mike Hatch had become
governor, and then he and Amy could’ve had a “GLOBAL WARMING SUMMIT” with Larry Jacobs squandering all the new cash that the Humphrey Institute would have received (for JACOBS role during the election in TRASHING Tim Pawlenty!)on
so-called “experts” to say what AMY said for free. Not to mention the taxpayers picking up her AIRFARE via the U of M ! Maybe JIM (let’s make a) DEAL would’ve picked up the whole cost of the seminar with all the money he would make on WIND FARMS and ETHANOL !!
