MDE IN THE NEWS: STAR TRIBUNE DISCUSSES ROLE OF TICE/BLACK BLOG “THE BIG QUESTION”

By Michael B. Brodkorb | April 15, 2007

"The problem is the messy collision of print journalism ethical standards with the freewheeling world of blogs and trying to do both at once. While Black and Tice write carefully, trying to stay this side of a line between political analysis and commentary, that's hard when not everyone agrees where the line is located.

In a March 30 blog entry, Tice wrote about Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Al Franken's 'history of foul-mouthed flippancies' and declared some 'too crude' to put on the blog, so he linked to the blog of conservative Michael Brodkorb of Minnesota Democrats Exposed, where the quotes were listed. Tice wrote he'd link to that blog for future posts on Franken when necessary.

Tice intended it as a humorous poke at the Star Tribune's 'church lady sensibilities.' But he was contacted by then-Franken supporter and now-press secretary Jess McIntosh, who complained about the line she thought suggested an intent to regularly link to Brodkorb's highly partisan blogging about Franken. Tice responded by removing the line and explained that wasn't his intent.

That's a glimpse of the scrutiny the newspaper's political coverage will get this year as Franken attempts to unseat Republican U.S. Sen. Norm Coleman in what is expected to be one of the nation's most high-voltage, top-dollar campaigns." Source: Star Tribune, April 15, 2007

Bummer that you and I are probably the only folks who read that immense Kate Parry article in full. Nothing like discouraging readers by presenting a monster article.

I think it is hilarious that Ms. Parry is of the opinion that the Star Tribune is not biased.

I’ll post again once I catch my breath from laughing so hard.

Sounds to me like the Franken people are going to target anyone who dares to bring up the truth about their hero. So much for that great “liberal” principle of free speech. Looks more like Stalinist “shut up the opposition” tactics.

This is why your voice in this process is so important.

Lest we forget, the MSM is extremely Liberal, and they still have the loudest voice in terms of delivering information to the people.

John Mayer, in “Waiting for the World to Change” sings:

“And when you trust your television (media), what you get is what you got. ‘Cause when they own the information, oh They can bend it all they want”

Of course Mayer, with his talking points, tries to create the illusion that somehow the Right has control of the media. Which is totally laughable and bullshit.

This is just one small example of the level of control the Left has on the MSM and information generally.

DFL campaign wants a story changed in the Trib?

They just get their marching orders from the campaigns communications director.

I believe Senator Coleman will ultimately defeat the extremist, hateful Franken.

But this is just more evidence that he and we, are going to have to take the message to the voters door-to-door, voter to voter.

Thank you MDE, for being one big voice, but everyone who cares about security, low taxes, and values better bind together for Coleman for the next year and half.

    DiDFtL,

You hit the nail on the head.

There is no question that Liberals “own the information,” with the MSM, and they do, consistently, “bend it all they want.” (interesting use of John Mayer btw).

For example, I was at the Tax Cut Rally, and there were 3 or 4 times as many people there than there were at the global warming rally.

We need to be conscientious of both environmental concerns, and the growth of government spending and taxes.

But it couldn’t have been more evident on Saturday that many many more (thousands more) Minnesota citizens took time out on a beautiful Saturday to demand tax cuts than came out to demand command and control government actions to stop global warming.

But Liberals, through the MSM, have control of the information, so most will never read that.

Thank you MDE. Even if Franken’s campaign controls the content of the Trib, we still read you.

And your information through the internet is viral.

Keep fighting, and with time, there will at least be parity in the delivering of information.

DiDFtL, I love that you quoted John Mayer. I have never seen this sensitive of yours. Very touching.

Steph I was at the rally on Saturday as well, did you notice how upset and worried the Global folks were when the tax rally was over? Nothing but a sea of green shirts trying to keep all the tax people from coming near their area. ;)

I found it quite funny as I saw many of the global warming folks coming up to our area and unless they were obnoxious they were allowed to be there. yet time and time again we see how the left is not about free speech but rather what ever it takes to keep the opposition quiet.

Ok, I’ve recovered from Kate Parry’s humorous article about journalistic ethics and the reputation of the StarTribune. I guess Franken has everyone coming forward with their best laugh material. Parry’s commentary would be legitimately comedic if it wasn’t so tragically off the mark.

Contrary to Parry’s attempt to cover her ass and the asses of the rest of the editorial board at the Strib, the reality is that Eric Black and Doug Tice participating in THE BIG QUESTION is the most honest and ethical bit of journalism the StarTribune has done in 20 years.

Eric Black is a liberal. We know he’s a liberal and a flaming liberal at that. When he writes articles in the Strib he has a very hard time covering his flaming liberalness. Doug Tice is perhaps not quite as liberal as Eric Black which by Strib standards makes him a conser, cons, sorry can’t even say that about him. Poor fella must have to take testosterone supplements to be able to hang onto his right-of-liberal label in that nuthouse.

The Strib’s reporting is always liberally biased. Did you read Conrad DeFiebre’s “gas tax promo piece” today? When’s the last time that leftist said anything in the paper approaching “balanced”? Then flip to the “institutional voice of the paper” in the op-ed/commentary section. Another calculated whine for more taxes.

Where is the reporting on the massive amounts of cash spent by tribal casino entities on MN elections last year? Where is the blow by blow payback analysis for Planned Parenthood sponsored DFL freshmen? Where is the profile of the teacher’s union and their inherent conflict of interest in managing teacher pensions and shepherding our kids through a broken public school system? Where are the articles about how entitlement programs are keeping blacks stuck in a no win Northside while poverty pimps like Spike Moss and Keith Ellison cash in the political payola? Where was the exclusivestory Tice secured for Amy Alexander’s courageous story last fall? Where was the vetting of Keith Ellison? Who stood by silent as DFL operatives foisted the notion of blackmail into that ridiculous mess? Where is the honesty in always defaulting to liberal positions in the Star Tribune?

Did the Strib even send a reporter to the Tax Cut Rally Saturday? Has the Op-Ed guy Tim Obrien ever written anything objective?

At least Eric Black and Doug Tice are putting forth a notion of a street with two sides when they blather on and on in THE BIG QUESTION.

The only thing reliably objective in the Strib are the obits and the sudoku, and that’s even questionable some days.

I was at the rally, too. Rep. Holberg did a great job pointing out all the tax increases that won’t just hit The Rich.

I really hope the Tribune bloggers don’t keep knuckling under every time some Democrat hack calls them up to bitch. Who am I kidding, we all know they will.

  9. Big Kahuna Says:

Michael can we get a thread going about the tax rally and what people saw or who was there kind of thing?

  10. Steph Says:

    Big Kahuna,

Maybe they were worried when people went down there from the tax rally that they’d be carrying.

And at least in my case, they would have been right.

  11. Walter Says:

Hey I wonder what Kate is going to do with my complaint about the tax rally. Among the highlights of my complaint:

    * On the Star Tribune website you had to go looking for it with the search engine to find their story. On their front page of the web site they told us about significant stories such as Don Ho dieing, a bank robbery, Saint Paul City Council races.

    * The changed the headline from the lead. The writer wrote “people rallying for tax cuts while a groupe at the other end of the capital mall called for action against global warming.”
The headline was “Planet Lovers and tax haters mix it up at State Capital.”

So I guess we don’t love the planet because we want tax cuts. And we also hate taxes even though there are things which hard earning tax payers acknowledge taxes are need and have to pay for.

    * The reporter interview one of the protesters at the global warming rally, but none from the tax rally.

    * The reporter mentioned the signs of the global warming people, but not the tax rally.

    * She quoted a lie from Scott Elkins who was in charge of the global warming rally. At the end of the piece he said if they want to get their message out that’s great.” Scott where exactly was that loud music coming from that was trying to drown out our speakers?

    * The reporter took an obviously inflated crowd estitmate from the global warming person unchallegened since 5,000 isn’t half of 7,000 (I’m being conservative and think we had them out numbered at least two to one)

    * Not bothering to quote speakers and their arguments.

    * Not asking people from the other side what they think of arguments made. I wonder what that teenager would’ve thought of John Kline’s comments about how bad the tax bills will be for our children and grandchildren. Maybe if that teenager understood his bad financial future he would’ve joined us.

So if Kate was willing to attack MDE like this
I can’t imagine what she should do with this article.

….Steph, will you have my children?

    Heh.

You’re right, that was an awful headline. How that gets by an editor’s desk is exhibit A in media bias. He/she probably didn’t even bat an eye.

  14. Walter Says:
    April 18th, 2007 at 1:56 AM

Well folks so far the Star Tribune’s letter to the editor section hasn’t published a single letter and Kate along with Andres won’t return my emails. It’s shows clearly that Kate only care about right wing bias.
