HOUSE DFL CAUCUS: THE HEAD DOESN’T KNOW WHAT THE TAIL IS DOING

By Michael B. Brodkorb | April 17, 2007

This is from MPR's Polinaut:

Near the end of today's House floor session, curious Republicans were asking DFL leaders for a preview of this week's work schedule.

Votes are pending on all major budget bills, but the exact order business remains unclear. Rep. Dean Simpson, R-Perham, inquired about the tax bill. He mentioned hearing on the radio that DFL leaders expected a floor vote on the tax bill by Saturday.

The chairwoman of the House Taxes Committee, Ann Lenczewski, DFL-Bloomington, explained that the tax bill would not be ready for a vote until next week.

House Majority Leader Tony Sertich, DFL-Chisholm, offered some advice to Simpson.

"Don't believe everything you hear on the radio," Sertich said. "We're going to get to the tax bill as soon as possible."

###

Now, let's go back to the radio part. There's a good chance the information Simpson heard was on MPR. There's also good chance this reporter was responsible for him hearing it. When accuracy is in question, it's always a good idea to go to the tape.

Here are some transcribed excerpts from a media briefing Sertich held Friday with House Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher.

Forum Communications Capitol Bureau Chief Don Davis: Are you planning to meet on Saturday next week?
Speaker Kelliher: Absolutely.
Davis: And will taxes be about the last thing?
Kelliher: I think it looks like that's kind of the lineup right now.

Almanac Political Reporter Mary Lahammer: Everything done by Saturday, even taxes?
Kelliher: That's our hope.

Information from the briefing was used in reports on MPR.

Wow, the DFL succeeded in hacking off MPR!

That’s amazing, given that MPR is an affiliate of the DFL. Hard to believe that MPR would bite the hand that feeds them.

Forget about what the tail is doing, the head doesn’t know what the head is doing. There’s no greater collection of clueless demagogues than the Minnesota DFL.

Don’t believe everything you hear on the radio that Democrats say.

Don’t believe anything you hear a Democrat say, radio or not.

Marge and Tony are in way over their heads. They have had ample opportunity to get help from republicans but they refuse to admit their incompetance.

In the grand scheme Marge cares but isn’t plussed about results this year as long as they accomplish their goal of embarassing Pawlenty. That’s all Larry has asked of them.

Antony just wants people to respect him. It’s tough to do when you contradict everything anybody says within your own team.

Left foot in, left foot out
Left foot in and you shake it all about (but avoid messing the hair)
You do the Hokey Pogie and you turn the facts around
    That’s what it’s all about!

I believe this is why the creation of 35 House committees, which necessitates a bill to run an 8-to-10-committee gauntlet to reach the floor for a vote, was a bad idea.

Their committee structure is a joke, but they skip over it when it suits them, like that teacher health insurance bill. Affects every teacher in the state, but never went to their myriad education committees, the leader of which just so happens to oppose the bill sponsored by a union that just so happens to spend gazillions on Democrats during elections.

Funny how you heard about that here first, isn’t it? Not like Dane Smith would have written about it or anything.

Like Rep. Marty Seifert quipped at the Tax Cut Rally last Saturday, “They are so disorganized, the left hand doesn’t know what the far left hand is doing any more.”
