FRANKEN CAMPAIGN STRATEGY: MAKE FRANKEN SEEM ALOOF AND OUT OF TOUCH IN CAMPAIGN VIDEOS

By Michael B. Brodkorb | April 26, 2007

This is the latest video from Al Franken’s campaign and it is almost too painful to watch. It must be a strategy of Franken’s campaign to make Franken seem aloof and dumb in campaign videos. I hope Franken’s campaign doesn’t fire the person who made this video, because I want more produced just like this one.

Wow, this video is bad.

UPDATE: Al Franken is running for the U.S. Senate in Minnesota. So who’s the rocket scientist on Franken’s campaign that decided the first question Franken would answer on camera would be from someone in Green Bay? Green Bay is in Wisconsin, not Minnesota.

This post also appears on Blogs for Norm!, an online community and blog covering the 2008 U.S. Senate campaign in Minnesota. The primary goal of Blogs for Norm! is to organize bloggers who support U.S. Senator Norm Coleman.

Actually, this gives me a pretty good indication why he’s not in comedy anymore…

Barely got through the first minute. What a douche.

    This explains why ErrAmerica failed.

He has to run a different kind of campaign, but that’s fairly dull…

Where is Senator Coleman’s latest podcast?

I dunno Christine, what’s your point? What ever it is, I’ll beg to disagree. LOL.

Where is Senator Coleman’s latest podcast?

Who cares? I don’t want my Senator sitting around trying to entertain his supporters. I want my Senator on the Hill working to make our country better (and fighting those evil, hateful liberals).

Franken looks like an idiot on this thing. The fact that he read that spam the way he did was insulting. If a conservative candidate had done that they’d have been called some sort of islamophobe and insensitive.

This IS very refreshing and warm. Al could be a new model for the great political representatives of the future. I don’t find his open, relaxed approach is artificial at all. (Bush’s “likability” on the other hand has always been way overrated.)

The fact that a small group of people are acting all annoyed by Al and his run for office just indicates how refreshing, intelligent and honest (read “threatening to the lemming Republican pundits”) he is.

Al’s approach IS exciting and has great potential to change the political environment in the Senate. Can you imaging GW speaking so intelligently off the cuff?

    Kudos to Al.

The things I liked about the video

-Relaxed tone and atmosphere. One thing that I like to think is that politics should be hard work and rewarding, but is should be fun too! Politics shouldnt always been doom and gloom, it is a very important job being a US Senator but one can do it without being a tight ass, ala Al Franken.

-I really am glad he wants to be the Veteran Affairs Committee, that committee would suit him BEAUTIFULLY! Him going to Iraq NUMEROUS times to entertain the troops, awesome, amazing. The answer was a little long winded however.

-The idea of having podcasts and video things I think is a great way to start transitioning to the internet and how we live. They are free, relatively quick to do and make a big difference.

-Having the text was a neat little touch.

    What I hated

    -The spam, little ridiculous

-The first question being from Wisconsin. Ok, you know what, keep the question, change that guy to being from freakin International Falls, Eveleth, Virginia or what have you. No one will know if you change the location. It was a great question though.

-The second question was a little bit of a lame one to choose. Meh?

I think its kind of funny how you guys all attack him and say he fails at being funny and this is why his radio show failed. These are two completely different and seperate Al Frankens, that was comedic Franken and this is politician Franken and I think he came off quite well in this video. I would however make it a little less quirky.

Man this will be a good race…. That last Senator race, what a dissapointment! It was advertised as this big throw down between Democrats and Republicans and would be the best chance for a Repub pick up and we would be in for the fight of our lives, snooze-fest. At least this one will be more entertaining to watch.

I think it is funny how both GOPers and DFLers are worked up about Franken when I doubt he even gets the nomination. There is a long line of Minnesota DFL veterans who are most likely not happy with Franken cutting in Front of them for a Senate seat. In the end it will be the old school DFL that is Frankens biggest problem.

I’m very happy everyone who hated this video didn’t say one thing about what Al said, only how he looked/acted. If you want to be taken seriously, try saying something with a hint of worth. Come on, make a valid point!

It has the look and feel of some of the bits he used to do on Saturday Night Live. Maybe even funnier than those bits. More precisely maybe less lame. But lame none the less. I can’t stand this guys politics and his comedy never did much for me either. My sense is that if this guy gains any momentum it will be not because of any smarts or talent he has but mostly because the liberal base in Minnesota will decide to throw all their weight behind him. Why do Minnesota democrats need a celeb like him anyway when they seemed to so easily have gotten Amy Klobuchar elected.
As a matter of fact, it seems he would be more valuable out there lampooning republicans full time with his books and public appearances. How the hell is his background in entertainment going to serve his base when he gets to Washington. Shouldn’t they be looking for someone with political savvy that can get things done for them in DC. Real things. Legislation passed. Not some gas bag Bush knocker. They are a dime a dozen these days. I think Al drinks his own bath water and the smart democrats must have got shouted down when it came to decide on Al Franken for US senate in Minnesota.
Al Franken’s public persona stirs up my contempt. Unlike a fine fella like Paul Wellstone, (though I disliked his politics) he was likable and affable. Paul seemed to argue his political views forcefully and gallantly. Can’t say the same about Al Franken. I predict he won’t win because there might be a great deal of Minnesotans who will vote against him because they don’t like smug, barely funny celebrities no matter from which state they come.
