[...] MDE is quick to note that only about 55-60% of DFLers backed Franken and Ciresi in the MPR poll. Truth is, this is why the head to head match ups look so bad and also why Ciresi and Franken should not be troubled by the poll. [...]

The fact remains that people don't really like Coleman. The unfortunate fact is that they like Franken and Ciresi even less. It appears we are still waiting for the dark horse.

SMM: You have been consistent that Franken is not the candidate who can beat Coleman.

I don't know that this one really says too much in any kind of definitive way. I don't want to split hairs about statistical relevance, but 625 respondents is a frightfully low sample size.

With that said, in the for what it's worth category, the poll DOES seem to re-assert what most people in Minnesota seem to believe instinctively--divided government is good.

I don't know if it is the Scandanavian overtone that somehow still permeates, but I think Coleman goes into this cycle with significant advantages:
1) He's the incumbant, and even if people aren't crazy about him, he's already there; 2) electing a Democrat would seem (for many) like putting all our eggs in the same basket, or some other kind of cliched metaphor; 3) Sure, Coleman's arrogant, but compared to Franken and (to a lesser degree) Ciresi, it is easy to paint him as a "humble" public servant.

If the Dems are to have any real chance in this race, they will need to find a serious person with established name recognition, a record of service, a degree of humility, and there are always the marriage/women distinctions that could (and likely will) be made.

Since remains largely unknown to people who aren't reading politcal blogs on their lunch breaks, he might be able to brand himself this way.

I've been known to read a poll or two & what this one says is simple: "Get out the butter because they're toast."
