FRANKEN’S FUNRAISING PACE TANKS; COLEMAN LIKELY TO HAVE CASH ON HAND ADVANTAGE OF $ 2 MILLION
By Michael B. Brodkorb | July 9, 2007
As I wrote two weeks ago, Al Franken (D-Big Entertainment) raised $1.3 million during the last reporting period. His campaign's spin was focused on the fact that Franken only fundraised during half of the reporting period. Therefore, if Franken raised $1.3 million in 45 days, his benchmark for the next full reporting period of 90 days should be close to $2.6 million.
But according to the AP, Franken only raised $1.9 million in 90 days and has under $2 million cash on hand:
"WASHINGTON – DFL candidate Al Franken announced today he had raised $1.9 million in the latest reporting period, more than Sen. Norm Coleman and Democratic rival Mike Ciresi.
Franken's take in the period, covering April to June, exceeded Coleman's $1.6 million and Ciresi's $750,000. Ciresi didn't begin raising money until May.
Despite the big period, Franken trailed Coleman in cash on hand, reporting just under $2 million compared to Coleman's $3.8 million. Ciresi ended the period with $625,000 in the bank." Source: Associated Press, July 9, 2007
When the reports are filed on July 15, they may show that Coleman has a cash on hand advantage of almost $2 million – almost twice the amount of Franken's cash on hand.
Franken's "burn-rate" (how much money he is spending compared to what he is raising) is really high. Franken's running a very expensive campaign.

Well, I think the spin they had for the first quarter set a high standard to live up to for the 2nd quarter.
If they had just said, we did amazing this quarter lets see what we can do next quarter, the 1.9 million would be amazing.
Plus, people with already really high recognition probably enjoy a very large 1st quarter because they already have a large base of popularity who will donate right away, after you get those initial donations of people who already know you, you then have to work for the donations.

Norm’s going to need that extra money to explain to Minnesotans why he has changed position on nearly every issue.
