UPDATE: PHONE CALLS BEING MADE TO GAUGE SUPPORT FOR CHRIS COLEMAN FOR U.S. SENATE
By Michael Brodkorb | July 9, 2007
I have spoken with two prominent Democrats in St. Paul who have confirmed that phone calls are being made to gauge interest in St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman running for the U.S. Senate.
According to my sources, the phone calls are not being made by anyone close to Coleman's political operation. The calls represent a dissatisfaction with the current field of DFL candidates running against Senator Coleman and with Mayor Coleman seen as a possible alternative to Franken and Ciresi.
I believe Coleman enjoys being the mayor of St. Paul and I wouldn't expect Coleman to run against Coleman. Please check back to Minnesota Democrats Exposed for more information on this developing story.
UPDATE: Tim Nelson of the Pioneer Press/City Hall Scoop has a post up about a Coleman vs. Coleman battle for the U.S. Senate.

This post also appears on Blogs for Norm!, an online community and blog covering the 2008 U.S. Senate campaign in Minnesota. The primary goal of Blogs for Norm! is to organize bloggers who support U.S. Senator Norm Coleman.

I am hearing this all over the place.
How interesting this would be. Very similar to the Warner v. Warner situation in Virginia a few years back.
The big difference is that Norm Coleman is the Coleman who made St. Paul great after it was on the verge of death.
Chris Coleman is trying to kill St. Paul after it was well on its path to greatness.
Great contrast for Senator Coleman to make.

While I agree with your analysis Capitol Insider, I don’t believe Mayor Coleman would run for the U.S. Senate.

I confess, it’s me making the calls, so I can win my bet of anyone-but-Franken against Michael.

If Chris Coleman were to get into the senate race his past support of Symbionese Liberation Army fugitive Kathleen Ann Soliah/Sara Jane Olson/Peterson would emerge. Chris Coleman was a longing personal friend and from what I’ve been ltold the “Best Man” at Soliah/Olson’s wedding.
Chris’s initial support was moderated unlike those of of State Snator Sandy Pappas who criticised the prosecution of the SLA related crimes as “not current”.
Chris Coleman’s support of Soliah/Olson was not irresponsible, just “tepid”. considering the gravity of the charges leveled against then recently arrested Soliah/Olson
By contrast, Norm Colemans post arrest comments were very precise and forceful. This can be obtained from local newspaper and local television news archives.
Also, Norm and Chris Coleman are not related. The best differentiation will come by explaining that Chris Coleman is the brother Star Tribune columnist Nick Coleman.
I’ve followed the Soliah/Olson arrest since June 26, 1999 at my website http://soliah.com

So, what you’re saying is that Nick’s and Chris’ parents raised two worthless, idiot sons.

Who are your sources?
The calls represent a dissatisfaction with the current field of DFL candidates running against Senator Coleman and with Mayor Coleman seen as a possible alternative to Franken and Ciresi.
Is that your opinion?

I doubt that Chris is dumb enough to let his political career dissolve this early in the game. I know Connie and Cecille aren’t that dumb and since they are obviously and appropriately Chris’ kitchen cabinet my money is on Chris Coleman staying out of this fight.
But Hal is right. The DFL is obviously frustrated about the field of candidates, and rightly so.
What if Franken wins the endorsement and then loses the election? The long term damage caused by Franken squeezing his elitist Hollywood cash filled teats all over Minnesota AND then losing the election to a far more serious Norm Coleman—that effect can not be underestimated. If Al mutes the field with cash and loses to Norm it will cripple the DFL.
Why is it so hard for the DFL to field a reasonable candidate? I’m not complaining, simply mystified.

Nelson’s post at City Hall Scoop is just a link to this story. Hardly a confirmation….
