MDE FROM THE ARCHIVES: FRANKEN ATTACKS REAGAN AS DRAFT DODGER
By Michael B. Brodkorb | July 30, 2007
"Recently, I was reading Al Franken's best-seller, 'Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them,' a book dedicated to exposing some of the stretched truths, half-truths and flat-out whoppers that right-wing media people have told in their effort to promote a conservative political agenda. And right in the middle of it, what do you know, Franken sets down a doozy of his own, or at least a very unfortunate mistake.
It comes on Page 223. Talking about Ronald Reagan's military service, Franken writes the following: 'He did dodge the draft during World War II. He 'served' in the filmmaking department, starring in the 1942 comedy 'Juke Girl' with Ann Sheridan.'
This sentence is misleading and inaccurate in several ways: Reagan did not make 'Juke Girl' when he was in the military. In fact, though the film was a 1942 release, it was completed only five days after the December 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. Reagan wasn't called into the service until three months after Pearl Harbor, when he was ordered to report to Fort Mason, here in San Francisco.
'Juke Girl' wasn't a comedy. Anyone who has ever seen it could not mistake it for a comedy. Reagan played a farmer who organizes other farmers against big shots who are ripping them off. In fact, it's an excellent movie, maybe Reagan's best." Source: The San Francisco Chronicle, April 4, 2004

Franken is a liberal!
far from it for a liberal to ignore facts when you can sling some political mud.
Yep, this guy is cut from the same cloth as Wellstone.

“He was so nearsighted that, as a college football player, his vision was limited to the square yard of turf occupied by the opposing team’s guard. His vision disqualified him from serving in combat units in World War II [6b].”

It’s common knowledge that Reagan wanted to serve during WWII.

I am shocked. I don’t see anything here on the KSTP/Survey USA poll that just came out. Coleman’s lead is down to single digits against both Ciresi and Franken. He’s below 50%. Deja vu anyone?

Only 15 months (and several million dollars) until the election.

Didn’t Al have like the entire sophomore class of Harvard or something doing research for this epic? They couldn’t catch that howler?
If all those touted researchers worked on another Franken tome, I apologize to Al for the besmirchment. I figure I’d better, before he blows a gasket and comes looking for me. He does have anger issues.

The section the quote appears in deals with Hannity’s book (Let Freedom Ring) where Hannity claims Clinton gutted the military and shows that Reagan asked for 840 new tanks in 1986 while Clinton asked for 0 new tanks in 1996 without referencing the collapse of the Soviet Union’s military and the fact that we didn’t need new tanks might have had something to do with this.
Al shows that Lincoln asked for 188,000+ plus horses in his 1864 budget, but Reagan only asked for 3 in his 1984 budget. The satirical passage that follows asked why Reagan wanted to gut the military and has the quote above.
The entire paragraph is:
Why did Reagan gut our military? Was it because there was no evidence that the Soviet Union represented a threat to the America and our friends and allies? No. (Michael’s quote) Its tagline: ‘Sure she’s easy to meet…but try and forget her!’

Answer: Because Reagan didn’t gut our military. He strengthened the overall force, invested in armaments, and drove unprecedented technology innovation and investments that our armed forces — and our economy — continue to use and benefit from.
It’s probably right that comparing the number of tanks ordered ten years and a different security threat away makes little sense. But the fact remains that Clinton nearly destroyed our armed forces.
He cut the man-power in half, and delivered almost zero new equipment. His only achievement as commander in chief was providing foxhole buddies for homosexuals, and launching a couple rockets in to the rectums of camels. … coincidence?

Good to see Christine knows her propaganda and lies cover to cover though.

Christine,
Hannity was right. Not only did Clinton not keep up with tanks and other armament, he also decreased our Naval fleet from 12 carriers down to 10. The Cold War might have been over, but throughout the Clinton years we saw terrorist attack after terrorist attack and found out that perhaps we could have used a larger military after all.

Reagan was a hypocrite. He said he would get rid of draft registration and then he kept it.
Would you be willing to spread the word about http://www.draftresistance.org? It’s a site dedicated to shattering the myths surrounding the selective slavery system and building mass civil disobedience to stop the draft before it starts.
Our banner on a website, printing and posting the anti-draft flyer or just telling friends would help.
Thanks!
