Revenues for road and bridge ocnstruction and repair have been going on for a long time. Perhaps the finger pointing concerning the bridge collapse by Mr. Tinklenberg is an attempt to cover his own ass.

Instead of building and repairing roads and bridges, The James Janos administration and Mr. Tinklenberg decided to build light rail.

He gets people together. To see or help see that things get done. He seems to believe he is good at that, after 25 years as a career politician.

"We accomplish some incredible things," he said.

Does he mean in the sense of outstanding and good, incredible that way, or in the sense of not being credible?

Is there anything you'd expose?

If Hatch had won the last election, and the bridge fallen the same way, would he have decided to become a congressional candidate because a cell phone tower somewhere ceased working right?

That's uncertain.

Elwyn Tinklenberg was a methodist minister, not lutheran, he has been working on transportation issues in the state for the better part of 30 years and has done a terrific job. To attack a former transportation commissioner who worked for 4 years and in his time built light rail, extended bus service to more people in the state than ever before and steadily decreased the number of deaths on MN roads is callous and irresponsible. Because Elwyn considers himself a "democrat" you attack him on no basis. You are all very off base. Maybe if y'all had prayed more that god would fix our bridges and roads we wouldn't be in this debacle in the first place. This is something that happens in a third world country, not America and especially not MN. Pawlenty today agrees a gas tax increase is in order and guess what, all major GOP figures in the state will take it RIGHT IN THE ASS!

The 3-4 seat majority never was exceeded between 1987 an 1998. Yes, after 2002, Republicans had a greater majority.

Democrats still ruined our state.

Alright.
Just to show I'm not a complete bastard, here's a list of METRO area bridges where the rating is deficient or below. Bridges are ranked 1 to 100, a rating of 50 or below is considered deficient. There are 72 in the metro area alone. Be careful.

Why not have a session to fund these specific projects?

The bridge was of concern only in the last five years. Guess who vetoed requests for a dedicated gas tax increase to roads and bridges? VP wannabe Governor Tim Pawlenty.

Thanks for pointing out that for 20 years the DFLers have avoided a gas tax (.05).

I guess there's a little liberal inside of Chestnut afterall.

Chestnut-

Good post. But one minor correction.

In the '02 elections, the GOP had 81 members and the House. That's more than a 3-4 seat majority.

You want insight:

The Minnesota Senate has been controlled entirely by Democrats since 1973

The Minnesota House was controlled by Democrats from 1971 to 1983, and then again from 1987 to 1998. The years between, Republicans never had more than a 3-4 seat majority. Between 1998 to the 2002 report that the bridge had deficiencies, Republicans never had more than a 7 seat majority.

… conclusion, as Minnesota’s bridges were deteriorating, Democrats were in charge of state spending, including all monies spent on highway improvement and maintenance.
