PIM: “COMPOUNDING THE TRAGEDY: THE POLITICAL BLAME GAME”

By Michael B. Brodkorb | August 2, 2007

"Shame on the Star Tribune’s Nick Coleman and the rest of the left who are laying the blame for the tragic collapse of the I-35W bridge on GOP Gov. Tim Pawlenty.

We don’t even know the number–let alone the names–of people killed. Doesn’t matter to Coleman and his ilk. Take any shot to smear a Republican." Source: Politics In Minnesota, August 2, 2007

Say, last year Jim Oberstar (Dem-MN) pushed through an expense 4 lane expansion of Hwy 53 north of Virginia MN….for his district. The Minn DOT said they don’t want this now as they have much higher needs. Does anyone know how much this pork barrel hwy project cost and if the funds could have gone to bridge replacement instead?

Wonder if Nick Coleman will comment on this.

Nick Coleman is such a small person and is totally bankrupt morally and ethically.

I almost feel sorry for the Star Tribune.

The I-35W bridge collapse exposed liberals for who they are, irresponsible, callous, opportunist, hypocritical partisan bastards.

Katie Couric featured Nick Coleman’s column on
her “newscast” tonight, trashing Pawlenty in
the process. By the time the media are done
spinning this at next year’s convention, the
GOP will be blamed for “Infrastructure-gate”.

Nick’s theme was “shame”, has he no shame about
the porkbarrel boondoggle on US 53 which probably carries no more than a few hundred vehicles/day? And, how about the $1 Billion dollar light rail joke that he is so eager to expand by many more $Billions around the metro?

Harry Reid to State of MN: “Drop Dead!”

In less than 24 hours, Reid blames Bush
for bridge collapse and then adjourns
    Senate, ignoring MN delegation request
for $250 million for bridge relief…

So, you say that Democrats are bad because they blame republicans, and then all your commentators just turn around and blame the democrats? Hm… Yes, thats not hypocrisy at all, no, not at all.

  7. Bobby Says:

    Now THAT’S class. Thanks Harry!

  8. Dave of the VRWC Says:
    August 2nd, 2007 at 7:18 PM

Actually I’m not blaming Democrats, I’m making a point that f*ckheads like Coleman are using selective facts to in their bashing of Republicans.

Northern, do you think this is President Bush’s fault?

One more time… with feeling… What Pawlenty vetoed was NOT A TRANSPORTATION BILL. It as an economy killing pay off to liberal, socialist special-interest groups. He vetoed:

“a transportation bill containing more than $5 billion in tax and fee increases, including adding 7-1/2 cents to the per-gallon gasoline tax, a “wheelage” tax (a tax on vehicles), sales tax increases for transit spending, an excise tax on new car purchases, and increased tab and license fees with a total cost to the average Minnesota family of up to $500 a year.

FIVE BILLION DOLLARS IN TAX INCREASES.

BTW… I noticed DJZ shut his gutter-snipe, worthless, jerk mouth about funding.

DEMOCRATS PLAY POLITICS WITH OUR TRANSPORTATION FUNDING. NOW THEY ARE DANCING ON THE DEAD.

  12. MnBlueWater Says:
    August 2nd, 2007 at 10:25 PM

Typical GOP right wing spin….take no responsibility (can you say Iraq war?). While T-Paw may not be directly responsible for this (that we know), he certainly needs to say, “The buck stops here!”

While in the Governor’s office, he has vetoed major transportation funding. As majority leader, he lead the charge for no new transportation funding when Ventura was in power.

Now, we all need to understand that there are extreme shortfalls in this system. The only way to overcome this is to (Gasp), raise some revenue. Perhaps this will bolster future inspections, repairs, and replacement so we will never have to face this type of thing again.

You cannot govern on the cheap and expect it not to come back to haunt.

The Guv needs to join hands with the DFL majority and pass a major bill (including gas tax increases, bonding and license tab fee adjustments) before we crumble more of our infrastructure.

    Wake up!

the Dickheads at Minnesota matters have totally blamed Bush for this..and Pawlenty….. so MnBluewater asshole……..look inside of your own hypocritical house………. Northern NON Debater…you guys are pricks from the get go….

  14. Veritas Says:
    August 2nd, 2007 at 10:39 PM

mark heaney has NO shame………he doesnt even know what caused it..no body does..but he blamed all of us who like lower taxes….A ONE JACK OFF

  15. MnBlueWater Says:
    August 2nd, 2007 at 10:47 PM

Wow…the GOP debate has now resorted to name calling.

    I guess you win!

  16. Chris Says:
    August 2nd, 2007 at 11:23 PM

    MnBlueWater,

You’re just wrong about Pawlenty’s record. 2006 was the biggest highway construction year in the state’s history. 2005 was the second biggest and 2004 was the third biggest. In 2007, the Governor proposed over $1.7 billion in projects. His proposal was killed in the legislature. The truth is that the DFL doesn’t really care aboutinfrastructure as much as they just want to raise taxes. If the legislature raised the gas tax 5 cents a gallon, it would take more than a decade to build the $1.7 billion in highways Pawlenty proposed in one year. If the legislature raised the gas tax 10 cents a gallon, it would take more than 5 years.

  17. Veritas Says:
    August 2nd, 2007 at 11:30 PM

I believe the DFLiars and their surrogates started the name calling eons ago..i a mlate to that game..but well armed..asswipe

  18. theskippy Says:

Implementing a gas tax would have been the most cost effective way of collecting the necessary money for our transportation needs. The gas tax would have made Minnesota eligible for millions of matching federal funds, which we are currently not. Since Oberstar is head of the transportation committee, we would have gotten more than our fair share of matching funds.

But all of this is moot. There could have been many things done to prevent this tragedy. There is plenty of blame to go around, among both parties.

  19. AlFrankenFraud Says:
    August 3rd, 2007 at 1:00 AM

The dimorats will take none of the blame.

  20. Chestnut Says:

MNBlueWater, quit eating the yellow snow.

  21. Chestnut Says:
    August 3rd, 2007 at 7:24 AM

Oberstar would have directed all the money to more 4 lane hiways through the woods.

  22. surly Says:
    August 3rd, 2007 at 7:58 AM

“As majority leader, he lead the charge for no new transportation funding when Ventura was in power.”

Bullshit. Saying that it was stupid to spend money on Jesse’s choo-choo to nowhere instead of upgrading freeways, adding lanes, etc. is NOT advocating NO new transportation funding.

  23. Mark Says:

    Somebody still reads PIM?

  24. TheDude Says:

Bush’s press conference the day after the tragedy–in which he blamed the Congress–trumped anything Coleman et al have said, simply because he is the president. The man cannot say anything without making it political. Then he blames others for “talking politics” as if what he said wasn’t doing the same. He is the president of everyone living in the US, not just the president of Republicans. He seems to forget this. That said, both sides have shot their mouths prematurely. And until both sides can stop trying to “win” and instead help the American people win, I don’t have much hope for anything getting done. Does anyone know of a figure who can unite both sides in a common purpose and cut through all this political trash-talking? Just look at the vitriol on this message board for evidence of the fruitlessness of finger-pointing.

I have a simple question for Northern Debater and MNBlueWater.

Say Governor Pawlenty did sign that Transportation bill….do you really think that would have prevented Wednesday’s tragedy?

    LL

  26. Chestnut Says:
    August 3rd, 2007 at 10:38 AM

The President’s comments on the budget had nothing to do with the bridge accident. Are you really this stupid?

The President’s discussion about the budget was forward looking. He was discussing concern that this DO NOTHING congress have sent him no spending bills, though they are due very soon as the current legislation expires. We’re heading for a government shut down.

Democrats are the most deceitful, dishonest and corrupt bunch of idiots on the planet.

  27. Johnny Says:
    August 3rd, 2007 at 10:47 AM

Speaking of the President, Tony Snow made it sound like it was Minnesota’s fault the bridge collapsed. It will be interesting to see what W says tomorrow.

  28. Chestnut Says:
    August 3rd, 2007 at 11:01 AM

Tony only said that it is the State of Minnesota that has responsibility for road building and maintenance.

Only a Democrat, none of whom have any idea how the government works, would believe that the Federal government has road crews out there.

    Dumb = Democrat.
