The state gas tax is dedicated 100% to "highway purposes". It is all the other taxes that can be spent on transit and other DFL pet projects. Why do you think they couldn't even send Pawlenty a straight gas tax increase. It would mean their pet transit projects wouldn't get funded.

Coleman is an idiot. I once took him up on something about the Iraq war. I sarcastically called him pal in the email and he got his undies in a bunch and basically challenged me to a fight. Not verbal, but physical. He said something to the effect if I meet you and you call me pal, I am going to fight you; paraphrasing of coure. I'd take great pleasure in a beat down on that old man. Let's face it, he's basically a commie.

It's still early to be figuring this mess out. Can we give it a week before we start grandstanding about solutions to a problem we do not understand? How would anyone even consider a special session when they do not know the cause of the collapse?

Methinks both sides are out of line for even speculating publicly while there are still bodies in the river. It serves no purpose than to get their faces in papers and voices onto the airwaves.

FYI the Governor didn't say he supported a gas tax on Almanac. He said it would be irresponsible during a catstrophe of this magnitude not to consider every possible option. He further suggested that his motive for saying that was to get the democrats to consider some if his ideas. He has handled himself well.

We do not need a special session. We do not need a higher gas tax. We need to reform the broken system we have and do things differently. Just throwing money at roads and bridges will not solve the problem.

We need a 5-10-15-20 year well crafted transportation plan. And we may be well served by making it illegal to have roads/bridges/infrastructure in the same legislation as transit. Let each issue stand alone so that they can be seen clearly for what they are.

Attaching weak ideas to bills for essential services like roads and bridges is yet another example of nincompoopism. But then again if VOTE YES! had been solely about transit there wouldn't be any constitutional amendment regarding MVST.

Bottom line the transportation bill was flushed because it was awful. The governor's plan (while not as conservative as I would have liked) was far more reasonable than the tripe the DFL delivered.

Let's all take a deep breath and say a prayer for the families missing their loved ones. I doubt any conclusive investigation will conclude before Thanksgiving so why not focus on doing some behind the scenes prep for the next legislative session. Unless of course there are a bunch of global warming seminars already booking up the first 30-40 days of this go round.

Half of that gas tax increase was slated for transit, not for roads.

If Pawlenty calls a special session, the new bill should make no mention of light rail lines or bike trails. Just have the gas tax increase go for roads and bridges.

By the way, how long until the left cites Pawlenty for "flip-flopping"? They had better be careful on this issue. I'm thinking people don't want this issue used for political gain...

Pawlenty proposed $1.7 billion dollar in spending that would be financed by borrowing. The DFL rejected it out of hand and sent him a gas tax increase that they knew he would veto. The DFL made the choice to play politics and need to be shown as the losers they are.

But it now appears that the Pawlenty and Seifert are both caving in to a possible tax increase. These are the two people I thought we could count on to hold the line. If they call a special session for this the DFL will throw in other tax increases too. Say goodby to your paychecks folks.

Pawlenty never received a transportation bill. He received a TAXportation bill. At a time when the state was running a $2.1 billion surplus, irresponsible Democrats delivered a TAXportation bill that would have penalized Minnesotans to the tune of another $5 BILLION.

The bill had nothing to do with roads and bridges. It had everything to do with sucking off liberal special interests.

Ah to hell with it. Let's have the Sheriffs of each county bust in everyone's doors and take a collection. Let's at least be honest about what's being advocated. And while we're being honest, let's make sure everyone pays their fair share... including the bottom 30 percent who pay nothing.

Hey 'Killshot' is that name suppose to mean you kill Democrats? I can't beleive MDE supports such sick individuals- wait, that's Brodcorbs dance, not mine.

Anyway, how could Rudy appoint a dying man to the Senate (it was well-known in 1978 that Nick had leukemia and was not long for here though he stuck around three more years), especially since Rudy was the Lt Governor when Humphrey died.

So how's is your lying ass- I mean 'theory' working now?

Doctore and zipity. Yes to both.

We have underspent on infrastructure. Problem is the DFL is saying it's all the evil Republicans. The low point was Klobachar saying Bush was responsible for the New Orleans levee failure.

There is no shortage of gov't spending. This year the fed'l gov't is spending rather large bucks on something called the "Black Halocaust Musuem" in Milwaukee. National Review found the fed'l gov't spending millions on swimming pools in California (including large buckos for a pool at a Gay-Lesbian-Transgender fitness center).

How about we spend our money one items that benefit everyone.

Methinks The Doctor has conveniently ignored the argument that the problem is not that we are under-taxed, but that non-critical, pet project spending is out of control. We here in the Red River Valley are watching the dumping of millions of dollars into expanding and moving The Trollwood Performing Arts School. You in the Mpls. area have witnessed the spending spree for various arts buildings. Don't get me wrong, I'm not anti-arts, but we obviously have other priorities that are more pressing.

As a conservative Republican and one who voted for Tim Pawlenty and overall think he has done a great job, I was very disappointed in his off hand way he dismissed the gas tax increase and lack of interest in the Transportation bill. What's 5 cents a gallon when we get 25 cent swings a day sometimes in a gallon especially when the need to fix our roads and bridges are so great. Now we know how great that need is.

Coleman raised valid points, I feel his anger at Tim's lack of leadership and foresight and general attitude on the part of Republicans at that time. The sacred "no new taxes" mentality (dude you won re-election) on this contributed to self interest political decisions I am sure he and many others now regret it, not that it would have affected this tragedy.

As for you Michael, you are political spit, and blaming Coleman or others for "politicizing" this event when in fact you are the one doing it and using terms like "hater" in the banner to sensationalize it just confirms what I hear on both sides of the aisle is that you are a political hack, running a hack rag and and as a conservative you embarrass me and make me want to distance myself from people like you.

Gas tax will go up by at least a dime, bonding will flow, General fund income and sales taxes will go up, along with tab fees, and we will get nothing but midnight basketball, light rail and a bigger beaurocracy at DOT. Roads will be no safer.

Nick Coleman falls into the category of tax whores who have no problem dumping endless piles of tax dollars into bottomless "Arts" rat-holes, and then pull this crap when tragedy strikes. Feh. I won't go piss on Nickies grave when he dies, but that's mostly because I hate standing in long lines.....

Nicky seems to have the answer to all of our problems doesn't he? Raise taxes.

Why did Nicky get his undies in a bunch when the reporter asked him about the Shubert theater. Answer; even Nicky knows that was a gross waste of our money.

We all have opinions on how money should be spent and how much money should be collected. I agree with Nicky that the ballpark is a waste of taxpayer dollars. We have to set priorities, thousands of people relied on that bridge to get to and from work every day, no one is using the Shubert for anything.

Is Carol Molnau going to continue to be allowed to talk, especially as the Governor turns to taxes and she says no way?

Maybe he'll fire her and Mandernach on the same day. Wonder when the next Veterans Home or mining scandals will trickle out.

The infrastructure that seems to be broken beyond the bridge is Governor Pawlenty's administration.

The reasons are "classified", but let's just say that the apple didn't fall far from the tree. Nick and Laura Billings--they deserve each other.

I hear that if you hurry down to the river, there some dental gold that’s just free for the taking! Be sure to bring your pliers! (and your snorkel)

Go Nick! Is there a correlation between this accident and Pawlenty thinking the gas tax might not be a bad idea after all?

You know if the state had to rebuild the bridge I would understand why we need new revenues, but I fail to understand what new state spending has become neccisary. Sure there is an instant lump sum of otherwise unexpected spending that has to to take place, but it won't amount to more then a couple hundered million at most which should not be enough to force a future long term revenue stream.

Spokesman Brian McClung says the governor is — quote — “Willing to consider all options, including a gas tax.”

So does this mean the gas tax should have been considered all along, regardless of promises to powerful friends or does it mean that political expediency and future ambition in the face of national media attention rules the day?

Murphy was on Almanac saying we need at least 1 billion per year. My public school math tells me thats a .33 cent increase. not to mention what the feds add. Right now we are paying a 16% tax on each gallon of gas. $2.79 minus .20 state, .18 fed. Now we need what 30% or even 40%. Do the math, I am correct. We don't need new taxes, we need new Government.

You know this is an absolute disgrace. The DFL will use this tragedy to fleece the taxpayers. I can just see it now each and every transportation bill for the next 20 years will have this bridges name on it.

I don't want my gas tax raised. I want leadership who is focused on real priorities. If the easy reaction is hey lets solve all lifes problems with the gas tax then it is clear we have no leadership. Fact of the matter is it shouldn't take a gas tax to fund transportation. If transportation is next on the list of priorities it shouldn't mean a transportation related revenue stream is the next best way to generate money. Earmark spending is the sign of cowards in power, if Tim Pawlenty or any other elected official doesn't understand what leadership is they should move on.

I have a difficult time understanding people like Nick Coleman. The govenor was more then ready to provide funding for our roads - proof is found in what he has done if previous years. The Dems decided they didn't like how the govenor wanted to finance the spending so they sent him a bill they already knew he would veto. Now if only the MSM could figure this out and spread the word.

Dave,

Yep, it was the Shubert. MPR was giddy last year at the prospect of sinking another $15 million into it.

Yes, I've always really disliked Rybak, but have to admit, he's actually acting like an adult. Maybe aliens have kiddnapped him and replaced him with a moderate old style Democrat.

First off, the bill Pawlenty vetoed would have raised the gas tax 5 cents per gallon BEGINNING SEPTEMBER 1. The bill would have had no effect on the bridge tragedy. I researched that bill on the legislature's website, and it seemed to me that half of the money raised would have gone for transit, and half for roads. If Republicans are smart, they would insist that every penny of the gas tax increase be spent on roads and bridges and maybe even call for a moratorium on light rail projects until all bridges are brought up to code.

I wonder if this spells the end for light rail in the Twin Cities?

Did anyone see the Lt Gov rip the media today? It was at a press conference at the collapse site. She got rather upset at all the stupid questions. Good for her.

Kudos to those working at the site and in our hospitals, etc. I can't even imagine what those divers are going through.

Pawlenty is doing a very good job in all this, and even Rybak is doing well.
