35-W BRIDGE COLLASPE EVIDENCE OF GLOBAL WARMING?
By Michael B. Brodkorb | August 7, 2007
It appears that State Representative Melissa Hortman is making this connection:
"[Representative Melissa] Hortman speculated that 90-plus-degree heat Wednesday and the above-normal temperatures of the past two summers may have been a contributing factor.
'Did the heat put extra strain on the steel?' Hortman said. 'You wonder if this bridge was built to withstand the massive heat we have had this summer.'" Source: Denver Post, August 2, 2007

Melissa Hortman is: 1) a media whore, she’ll do or say anything to see her name in print, 2) retarded, she thinks global COOLING is a result of “global warming”. She worships the ground Algore walks on.
On her “thought”, we know of course that bridges in warmer climates than MN collapse all the time because of “global warming”. You know all those bridges in Mobile, Alabama - where it’s 100 degrees all the time - are collapsing on a daily basis. And those bridges in Phoenix? Of course, it happens there so often they make their bridges disposable.
What a retarded statement. Hortman, resign and make us all happy.
August 7th, 2007 at 5:35 pm
I would criticize Hortman, but then she might sue me like she tried to do (and failed) last year against the House GOP Caucus.
Apparently, she was just pissed off about the very unflattering photo of her on a lit piece.
August 7th, 2007 at 5:37 pm
She’s not an engineer…but her comments clearly show her to be an idiot.
It was just a matter of time before they got around to blaming the global warming - since the Republicans/Bush were blamed last week.
I wonder who or what will be blamed next.
August 7th, 2007 at 5:45 pm
“She’s not an engineer…”…but she attempts to play one on TV, radio or anyplace else she can get her mug shown.
August 7th, 2007 at 5:56 pm
I think she needs to lay off whatever she’s smoking.
August 7th, 2007 at 6:06 pm
She says this type of thing because our liberal media has the mindset “If a progressive says it, it must be true so there is no need to question!
I don’t think we have had any 100+ days this summer, it’s been the humidity which doesn’t affect steel expansion. (These liberal progressive types don’t need to know material physics, they “feel”. With progressives feelings are more important than facts.
I started a blog on the bridge collapse. For the spelling challenged progressives I made it simple http://riverbridgefall.com . Withing a day riverbridgecollpse.com will work. http://thedailydigital.com also redirects to the site.

It’s not the heat, it’s the stupidity.
August 7th, 2007 at 6:12 pm
Am I missing something? Where in that quote does Hortman say anything about global warming? She said it was hot.
Do you just pull this stuff out of your ass, or is their some greater context you neglected to include?
August 7th, 2007 at 6:29 pm
She said she wondered if 2 warmer than normal summers in a row were enough to bring a bridge down. Forgive me but we had 3 summers in a row back in the early 1990’s that were very hot. At minimum, Ms. Hortman is very ignorant of Minnesota’s climatological history. And that’s being very generous.
August 7th, 2007 at 6:36 pm
Do any of you righties know how to spell collapse?
August 7th, 2007 at 6:45 pm
But Rosie O’Donnell told me that fire and heat don’t have any affect on steel. …
This is just another stupid remark from a lunatic, retarded liberal. One among millions.
August 7th, 2007 at 6:46 pm
I have to go with Huh? Her sentence may not have made the most sense (every summer gets like this around this time of the year), but she did not pull a wacko global warming fundamentalist statement.
August 7th, 2007 at 6:47 pm
None of you seem to know anything about the properties of heating and cooling since science seems to be an optional subject for our modern Republican Party. HEAT CAN CAUSE THINGS TO EXPAND OR MELT. Things like concrete and steel can and do expand (ever so slightly) in heat and we all know that asphalt melts. I’m not saying that the temperature is what caused the bridge to finally break, but I bet you good money that the NTSB hasn’t ruled it out as a contributing factor yet. I invite you to look here and LEARN SOMETHING: http://simscience.org/cracks/advanced/concrete2.html
I’ve seen Michael miss the boat more times than I can count, but this is another time where he sees the opportunity for a quick, ill-informed smear when people are seriously trying to determine what caused the bridge to collapse.
August 7th, 2007 at 7:24 pm
Who the heck knows but my spendaholic governor is ready to build the super light rail bridge with your money. I understand Michael will support Pawlenty over no matter how much he resembles Roger Moe, but I’m still waiting to here what the simple minded hey light rail sucks lets call it a choo choo have to say about Governor tax and spend.
August 7th, 2007 at 7:30 pm
I didn’t see the topic of global warming discussed anywhere in this article. All she said was that the heat could have added extra strain to the bridge. Do you have indisputable proof that the heat did not put any pressure on the bridge?
August 7th, 2007 at 7:38 pm
Matt, we know extreme temperature changes cause metal to expand and contract. In fact, we’ve had many summers much hotter than this one. It’s just a dumb statement.
August 7th, 2007 at 8:10 pm
Where in that quote does Hortman say anything about global warming? She said it was hot.
If you know anything about Hortman, she’s been all over this global warming non-sense (pre-Bush, Pawlenty, Gas Tax, Global Warming-caused bridge collapse).
August 7th, 2007 at 8:11 pm
Chestnut: here is Michael politicizing the bridge collapse (by clearly putting words in her mouth) and doing so on what could be a clear a factor on steel and concrete: wide temperature fluctuations.
MDE is the dips**t that said “global warming”, not her. She raised a very valid point: was the bridge designed in the 1960s to be able to go from -20 degrees in the winter to over 90 degrees in the summer? One really hot summer day isn’t enough to break a bridge, but 40 winters and 40 summers? You better bet it could.
Also: Michael, please live up to your own standards and stop trying to score political points while there are bodies of good Minnesotans still in the river. Thank you.
August 7th, 2007 at 8:16 pm
I think it is kind of obvious that she implies global warming.
We have 90+ days all the time, I remember many a blistering hot summer day here in MN. Heat probably played little to no part in the bridge collapse.
August 7th, 2007 at 8:24 pm
If Hortman can speculate about hot weather playing a factor in the bridge’s collapse, then we can speculate about the wasteful spending by state and local governments on liberal, foo-foo projects as being a factor in the bridge collapse as well.
Matt, many other bridges have withstood temperature fluctuations, so the purpose of her statement was not to focus on weather alone but rather her own worldview. Quite being a tool.
I am so tired of Democrats spinning this catastrohpe to fit their own agenda. The investigative report — not the DFL politicos — will tell us why the bridge collapsed.
August 7th, 2007 at 8:31 pm
Matt’s the dipsh*t, not MDE.
Google “melissa hortman” “global warming” and you’ll find out just how involved she is in this hoax AND how even GW hoaxsters are wondering the same thing.
Matt’s not only a dipsh*t, but he’s a lazy dipsh*t who is playing politics with dead bodies.
Shame on you.
August 7th, 2007 at 10:02 pm
she is smoking the same weed that Mark heaney of Minnesota matters is smoking…he is wigging out…he wil lneed a straight jacket soon…he will g opostal for sure…. he is a raging lunatic….who is more marginalized every day
August 7th, 2007 at 10:19 pm
How can you lefites not even deduce from her heat comments, and global warming? Why else would she even bring the heat up?
I swear, I wonder how some who commented above made it through elementary ed, with that lack of deductive reasoning. Connect the dots, as you like to say…..
August 7th, 2007 at 10:58 pm
Go read the actual article at Pioneer Press - the only ones who are saying anything about global warming are you freaks - Denver Post and Rush L are the ringleaders on this one. You all just keep on following in line…
She offered up nothing less than all my neighbors and I (who live within a mile of the bridge) have been speculating over the last few days.
They don’t build bridges in San Antonio to withstand extended cold, just like they don’t design them up here for extended heat - who thought in the 60’s that Minnesota would heat up like this?! First time I heard about heat possibly being a factor was a Strib article about a bridge engineers speculation.
I don’t find that anymore out of line than anything else I have read.

carolin clearly you and your neighbors arefruitloops… matt go back to MNpussysareus wwehreyou belong

Desperation.
Spin.
Where does it lead? More desperation, more spin.
Sinking, sinking, sinking.
August 8th, 2007 at 3:51 am
LOL so now the liberals think it never got 90+ in the 60s or before? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA I guess they aren’t bright enough to know that mid-continental areas see the biggest temperature extremes, ie they get very hot summers and very cold winters. Guess where Minnesota is…….in the middle of the North American continent. LOL
August 8th, 2007 at 8:19 am
Honeydog is right on I mean who ever heard of a road buckling due to heat. That is just absolutely absurd
for her to think that roads would ever buckle due to
heat!!!!!
August 8th, 2007 at 8:30 am
Dear Melissa Hortman,
What expertise do you have to lend Minnesota that would assign any credibility to your speculation about 90-degree heat on August 1, 2007, and two pretty darn hot summers in ‘05 and ‘06? What depth do you have in the area of physics and metallurgical science?
What qualifies you to make such an edumacated speculation?
Are you a lawyer or a salvage yard owner?

You knew the lefties would not be able to help themselves with this one. Everything comes back to global warming and yes, that is EXACTLY what she meant with this statement and you can also bet many of the libs here agree with her.
Just another clueless liberal, one of many we have here.

Matt, first of all, asphalt softens..it does not melt..how does gravel melt? second of all, was it not hot in 1967?..remember 1988..the hottest year on record was 1936…. and Horton does try to make the connection to global warming by claiming this years heat is “massive” you are too niave to understand that….. go back to your hole at MnpussiesRus…..nobody is listening

Very interesting…

Did heat, rusted plates doom bridge?
Federal investigators are trying to determine whether 91-degree heat caused expansion that put too much pressure on the corroded gusset plates that held the I-35W span together.

Cassie A.,
Don’t you know that the NTSB is a bunch of communists! They are full of Hollywood liberals! That article proves that Micheal Brodkorb was right all along!
Oh wait, maybe they are a bunch of engineers, dang, so much for that theory!!!!!!!
LOL, There has not been much comments on this board since that story came out. When will Micheal, Rush, Sean, and Jason Lewis apologize?
