MN GOP PRESS RELEASE: “DRAZKOWSKI WIN SIGNALS GROWING REPUBLICAN MOMENTUM HEADING INTO 2008″

By Michael B. Brodkorb | August 7, 2007

St. Paul – Republican Party of Minnesota Chairman Ron Carey today issued the following statement regarding Republican Steve Drazkowski’s victory in House District 28B.

"Steve Drazkowski's win in House District 28B signals growing Republican momentum as we head into 2008.  On the heels of a legislative session in which Democrats proposed over $5 billion in tax increases and a record setting spending binge, it's clear Republicans are well positioned to secure major victories next year."

For a Republican in this district to get only 53% is hardly what I would call “momentum”!

    Mark,

Sour grapes? Drazkowski got about the same as Pawlenty, Bush and other Republican candidates in the district. Moreoever, he won a special election after a very tough Republican year.

For a Republican in this district to get 53% when the DFL smeared him relentlessly, deployed Teacher Union field staff and outspent the GOP candidate by an estimated mind-numbing 7:1 its a major indicator of the reality that Minnesota is not buying what the DFL is selling.

Last years legislative session was enough nincompoopism for Minnesota. And the DFL won’t get away with acting like republicans to get elected and then proposing $5 billion in tax increases.

Minnesotans are not as dumb as the DFL thinks they are.

Mark, Drew is exactly right! The DFL put all they had on this race and were hoping to use it as momentum going forward. However as I predicted yesterday this would be the start of the fall of the DFL in local races.

I think the toothpaste is out of the tube and mainstream MN has had enough of the DFL. :)

Was there ever any real doubt that the Republican was going to win?

    No.

The seat has been in the hands of the Republicans for nearly 3 decades – why would anything change.

It is not the begining of the fall for the DFL – it is rather what should be expected from a more historically conservative/Republican House district.

If you can’t see political realities for what they are you don’t deserve to comment on them.

    You should talk Turkish! :)

You side has been doing all they could to try and take this seat including your partners in crime at the red star claiming it looked like the liberal would win. Which of course has been the mainstream media’s tactic for years is to claim the democRat has won before they truely know the counts hoping to discourage a Republican vote or two. :)

The liberals had hoped to ride the wave of victory they enjoyed in November. However the DFL did not take into account how the public would react to their tax and spend ways as they had promised to be different this time. ;)

Not much is going well for the liberal base right now. :) I think they got their hopes up too high after 2006.

Hang on Turkish, here comes repeates of 2000, 2002, and 2004. :)

At this point, I’m trying to avoid reading too deeply into the tea leaves regarding this election.

In some respects, it was Drazkowski’s to lose given the political make-up of the district. On the other hand, the DFL believed they had a legit shot at winning this seat based on pouring a lot of special interest money into Pfeilsticker’s race.

Maybe the DFL would have been better off going with the ’06 nominee, Jeff Flaten. But they threw that to the wind.

The short answer? This race was a needed boost for Minnesota Republicans and we got rid of Steve “I Love Carl Pohlad” Sviggum. The GOP also caused Education Minnesota to burn a lot of cash on this race.

All in all, a good day. Let’s enjoy it and get ready the next one!

This (meaning the results of the special election) proves that even Ron Carey can’t lose them all!

  9. Turkish Says:

    Big Kahuna

Of course the DFL is trying to take the seat – what party would not want to attempt to capitalize on an open seat?

But everyone knew what the outcome would be. The only person who seems to be surprised is you.

The reality is – if you can understand reality -is that the district was Republican and it will stay Republican. There is no reason to believe otherwise.

No matter how much money was spent in that district by the DFL – it does not make up for the fact the district is conservative – why would money change this factor?

The voters would not go from a Rep. like Svigum to a DFLer – that would be a complete 180 on the political spectrum – not many districts in MN or the USA ever do a complete 180 in a given election cycle. Going from a staunch conservative to a liberal Democrat rarely ever happens.

Anyone with any sort of political intelligence could see this – to debate the outcome like it was a surprise the Republican won is naive.
