MDE FROM THE ARCHIVES: FRANKEN JOKES ABOUT ABORTION AND RAPE
By Michael B. Brodkorb | August 14, 2007
"Nobody likes getting an abortion. Except, perhaps, rape victims. It's just that pro-choice people know that sometimes women get pregnant when they aren't ready to have a child." Source: Al Franken, The Truth (With Jokes, Plume, p. 124, 2006)
###
Al Franken, the front runner for the DFL nomination for U.S. Senate joked about rape and abortion. Sick.
Franken's joke about abortion and rape will remain the top post for today on Minnesota Democrats Exposed.
UPDATE: I've emailed Franken's comments to crisis centers in Minnesota. Please check back to Minnesota Democrats Exposed for reactions I receive about Franken's comment.
UPDATE #2: According to a comment left on Minnesota Democrats Exposed, Drew Emmer of the Wright County Republican contacted Franken's office for comment.

Help me out here. Where’s the “joke”? I’m certainly not a Franken supporter, but I don’t see how this comment is a joke. Can someone explain this to me?
August 14th, 2007 at 10:44 AM
The name of the book is the The Truth (With Jokes). Are you claiming that rape victims “like” getting abortions like Franken claimed?
August 14th, 2007 at 10:57 AM
It’s not a joke. It’s a crass, stupid comment. Classic Franken.
August 14th, 2007 at 10:59 AM
“It’s just that pro-choice people know that sometimes women get pregnant when they aren’t ready to have a child.”
So it is just a convience issue then. Disposable children. Of course hundreds of thousands are waiting to adapt.

Joking about rape…I mean come on?
August 14th, 2007 at 12:17 PM
Q: How do you stop five liberals from raping an illegal immigrant?
A: Hold an Anti-Bush rally.
August 14th, 2007 at 12:17 PM
I think there are plenty of reasons to pound on Franken. This seems like a stretch. It doesn’t sound like a joke, and the suggestion that rape victims “like” abortion is poorly worded to be sure, but he is just saying that a rape victim, in a desire to be cleansed of everything related to the experience, feels differently about abortion than others.
Don’t come after me. I believe abortion is wrong even in rape cases. I am not a liberal. But I think liberals can be defeated on the more important matter of what they actually mean, not just their poor choice of words that doesn’t really convey what they intend.
There are REAL things for which to oppose liberals. We don’t have to create issues out of poorly worded sentences. That makes US look desparate. I’m not sure about the context, but this doesn’t look like a joke. Franken may be a liberal extraordinaire, but he’s not stupid enough to joke about rape victims. Let’s keep the discussion on the level of the real and not create nonexistant crises. Franken is for abortion on demand. That’s enough.

Franken’s books express strong support for abortion rights, gun control laws, same-sex marriage, environmental protections and a revamped, more progressive income tax system. In the postscript of The Truth (with jokes), Franken joked that if elected to the Senate, in the two week window between the Senate’s swearing in and Bush’s leaving office, he would push for a “quickie impeachment” – the last straw that breaks the camels-or in simple terms -another another point to why this clown will not win in 2008.
August 14th, 2007 at 12:46 PM
Folks, this is a joke about rape and abortion.
August 14th, 2007 at 12:54 PM
So I assume you’re going to criticize Glib for his joke about rape in this thread?
August 14th, 2007 at 12:55 PM
Gilb: Knock it off.
August 14th, 2007 at 12:56 PM
Seriously, where is the joke? Just because Franken stands for everything most of us oppose doesn’t mean we can put words/meaning in his mouth. This isn’t a joke just because we/you say it is. It doesn’t sound like a joke. I don’t see a punch line. I don’t see any attempt at humor, even sick humor directed to Franken’s liberal audience.
The header on this page says it is a “truthful discussion.” I like that. Let’s go with that. I don’t see any “truth” to support that Franken ever intended this as a joke. Does anyone have the book? Can someone post a little more of the context so we can see where the joke is supposed to be.
Hey, if this is a joke, I’ll rage all over the Internet about this guy, but I’m not going to “be” a politician and create “truth” out of thin air when there is no substance. I encourage us all to do the same. If we can’t take a higher road than that, then we’re part of the problem, not the solution.
August 14th, 2007 at 1:11 PM
These are Franken’s words and they are reckless. Seeing as they are in a book titled “The Truth (with jokes)” it appears to be either something he believes or something he is making fun of.
If he believes that rape victims actually like getting abortions he hasn’t spoken to enough rape victims. If he is lampooning rape or abortion he is beyond human aid.
August 14th, 2007 at 1:11 PM
The quote clearly says that Franken thinks rape victims like getting abortions. I certainly hope that’s a joke (albeit disgusting) it’s even worse if he was serious about it!

I’m thinking it was supposed to be a joke. Personally, I think he was trying to inject a little humor into a touchy subject. The comment was stupid, definately not funny, and oh so typical Franken.
By the way, if somebody isn’t ready to have kids, then they either have to abstain from sex or use birth control. If they use birth control, they have to keep in mind that no method of birth control, except abstinence, is 100%, so if they find themselves in a ‘family’ way, the need to accept the consequences of their actions. That also doesn’t mean keeping the kid when they can’t afford it, there is this wonderful thing called adoption.
August 14th, 2007 at 1:31 PM
Not sure why anyone here doesn’t understand that this is a Franken joke… aside from the fact that it’s not funny. But then, that’s just proof positive that it is a Franken joke.
Seriously though, it’s not so much a classic-form joke as it is a smart-ass, sarcastic comment. It’s not supposed to be funny “ha ha”… it’s supposed to be funny “fuck you”. Again, typical Al Franken humor.
It’s a stupid, classless remark… which really only detracts from what his message there was… which wasn’t that great of a message in the first place. … again, classic Franken.
August 14th, 2007 at 2:43 PM
Michael, do you get paid by someone to send these emails to crisis centers?
August 14th, 2007 at 2:47 PM
He’s a liberal. He can do and say what he wants as long as he supports the liberal left wing agenda. They don’t care. Not a surprise.
August 14th, 2007 at 3:15 PM
I just left a message for Jess McIntosh and Andy Barr at Al Franken’s campaign headquarters asking for a comment on this explosive piece of information.
Jess and Andy are stand up people and I expect that I will hear back from them as soon as they are out of their meeting.
August 14th, 2007 at 3:24 PM
I also just left a message requesting comment from Harriet Tubman Women’s Shelter.
I worked with Sheila Wellstone to raise money for the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. No democrat has ever done more for women victims of rape and abuse.
I strongly believe both Sheila and Paul would blow a gasket over this type of garbage fomented by Franken, and for profit.
That’s not Senator material Al.
August 14th, 2007 at 3:27 PM
Funny how folks like avidor troll around and then spread their hate toward conservatives but can’t lift a finger now?! Or is it only Christians that you attack Avidor?
August 14th, 2007 at 3:27 PM
It always amazes me how far the Left goes with their “ends justifies the means” tactics and values.
Of course nobody thinks very highly of rapists (save the scumbags themselves). And the Left “claims” to be the voice of feminism and women’s rights.
So why is a joke about rape ok as long as it comes from someone who purports to be “progressive” “pro-choice” or “pro-peace?” (setting aside for the moment Franken’s past support for a pro-life position and support for the Iraq war).
I am interested to see how the DFL Feminist Caucus deals with this hypocrisy.
August 14th, 2007 at 3:48 PM
I’m sure Franken will hide behind his “I’m a satarist” excuse that he always uses for his disgusting comments.
Saying rape victims like getting abortions isn’t satire Al, that’s reprehensible.
August 14th, 2007 at 4:00 PM
this is just disgusting, Al.
a new low even for Franken who is a no-talent ass clown.
August 14th, 2007 at 4:41 PM
Honeydog! As much as I find your attitude towards me hostile much of the time, I do concur with you that Franken’s attempt at a joke was not in the best taste nor in the best interest of women. Crass and uncalled for.
I also concur that Adoption is a wonderful choice for a baby a woman is not ready to rear. Also with that, counseling is needed for the said woman so that she not repeat her actions and is more responsible.
Case in point: One sister had an Abortion 3 months after giving premature birth to her first child, who had spent almost 3 months in Preemie Intensive Care back in 1979. She has earned from that experience being only 17, no real job to speak of, let alone no money. Thankfully my father’s Health Insurance covered my sister and the baby. When she turned 18 in late April of that year, my father gave her the money for a tri-mester Abortion. She went on to marry the father, have 2 more children, had her tubes tied, and celebrated her 27th Wedding Anniversary. She is a grandmother now and loves it. Daughter is unmarried, but the baby was wanted. Good things do happen.
The same year in 1979, another sister was abandoned by her fiance. Was pregnant, carried the baby to term and gave it up for Adoption. Both sister made difficult decisions and learned from their experiences. The sister who gave her child up for Adpotion just learned that his birth mother, my sister, had died in Nov. of 2006 of natural causes. He was grateful for what she did for him.
August 15th, 2007 at 3:48 AM
Wow kathy, I can’t believe you admit you have one sister who was a tramp and got an abortion twice, or that your father actually helped her kill one of them.
August 15th, 2007 at 6:28 AM
I’m glad kathy loves her sisters. It doesn’t change the fact that abortion is murder and should be banned in all forms.
August 15th, 2007 at 9:13 AM
As our policy stands now it appears that America values sex more than it values children.
August 15th, 2007 at 9:14 AM
I’m sorry to report that neither Al Franken’s campaign nor Harriet Tubman Women’s Shelter has called me back about my inquiry into Al Franken’s rape/abortion jokes.
August 16th, 2007 at 8:44 AM
Yeah, Honeydog, I bet that’s not a story they tell too often around the dinner table at kathy’s house.
“Watch out for grandpa. He paid to have one of your brothers or sisters killed.”
