MDE FROM THE ARCHIVES: FRANKEN SKIT ABOUT CALLING RAPIST HOT-LINE EARNS “BOOS AND HISSES
By Michael B. Brodkorb | September 16, 2007
I was reading an article again about Al Franken supporting Republican Congressman John Anderson's presidential campaign instead of supporting the ticket of Carter-Mondale when I noticed another example of Franken joking about rape.
"Franklen and Davis came on first with an act that ranged from political to social to unseemly — including one sketch about a hot-line for rapists, so they could call up and have someone to talk to — which drew boos and hisses. That joke was part of a larger skit on feminist issues called 'You've Come a Long Way, Buddy': 'A show about men, for men . . . our researchers are men, even our cameramen are men. Our guest today is Craig, from the National Organization of Men.'
The two introduced themselves with a disclaimer: 'The views expressed here are the views only of Franken and Davis, and not the Anderson people.'" Source: The Washington Post, July 11, 1980
Al Franken, the front runner for the DFL nomination for U.S. Senate, joked about rape. Sadly, this isn't the first time I've posted an example of Franken joking about rape.
Folks, this guy has problems – serious problems.

Actually, I could see how a “hot-line for rapists” would be kinda funny, even though rape is not… I imagine the callers using all the cliche stupid excuses (i.e. “… the way she was dressed…,” “… I bought dinner…,” or “every guy knows that ‘no’ means yes, come on!…”)… and the “councelors
It’s not “ha ha” funny, but it sort of satirically works…

Chestnut:
Rape is not funny.

I didn’t say it was.

I can see it in theory being kind of funny, but also uncomfortable at the same time.
There is a video put out by the Onion where it’s a newscast about a girl going missing and she is probably getting raped as we speak.

It’s funny yet a little bit too sick.

Thanks Andrew, that’s the point. That clip is art imitating life. News casts are so friggin’ stupid and amped speculation of the worst kind… The Onion gets it…
I hate Al Franken… but the idea of a “support group hot line” for the most unsympathetic of characters, is sort of a parody/satire on the idea that everyone is a victim.
I don’t know if know if that’s what Franken… if so, I can understand how it may have been a joke… If not… then this whole line of monologue is pointless.

You have to be pretty fucking stupid to not understand that this is satire. He’s a comedian. Comedians perform comedy. Comedy involves satire. Please refer to http://www.dictionary.com for a definition, or for a more complete

CAI: What’s funny about rape?
September 17th, 2007 at 10:49 am
I assume then, COI, that you appreciate Ann Coulter, who is specializes in satire.
September 17th, 2007 at 11:43 am
Chestnut, you know better! there are one set of standards for liberals and then another for the rest of us. Somehow they cannot find the humor in Ann’s work.
September 17th, 2007 at 10:11 pm
So Ann Coulter doesn’t believe what she says? She’s really a big lefty? Because generally, satirists espouse views opposite of their own to make their point.
September 18th, 2007 at 3:42 am
Well then Discordian, by your analogy, then Franken is then a die hard “neocon”?

Wow. OK. The sketch says rapists should have a hot-line to help them. If he’s working satirically, he’s pointing out that it’s idiocy to have sympathy for rapists.
Ann Coulter says all liberals support Al Queda. If she’s working satirically, she’s pointing out the idiocy of this position.
To be fair, I think Michael Savage and Swiftee are the only people who truly hold that position.
