BREAKING NEWS: CONGRESSMAN RAMSTAD TO RETIRE?
By Michael B. Brodkorb | September 17, 2007
I'm hearing rumors that Congressman Jim Ramstad may retire from Congress and not run for re-election in 2008. Please check back to Minnesota Democrats Exposed for more information.
UPDATE: According to my sources, Congressman Ramstad has press conference scheduled for 3:00 p.m. today to announce his future plans.
UPDATE #2: The Star Tribune has a story on their website which confirms my information.

[...] That would be the net result if this rumor posted by Brodkorb proves to be true. [...]

If he’s retiring than maybe we can get a real Republican to represent that district. It’s bad enough that he’s holding a Republican, but voting like the city liberal members of the delegation.

[...] Michael Brodkorb over at Minnesota Democrats Exposed seems fairly certain that Jim Ramstad, Congressman from Minnesota’s 3rd District, is about to announce his retirement. We feel confident enough in the veracity of this rapidly circulating rumor to report on it. Needless to say, if this is true and Ramstad does announce his retirement it will create a highly contested and competitive race in the 3rd. The 3rd has a fairly high Democratic index as it stands, and this is going to be (by all indicators) a bad year for Republicans. [...]

If true, it will be very unfortunate to lose a Republican who actually reached across the aisle at times and displayed some common sense.

His health is good. I hear he just wants a normal life again.

Who is likely to be the endorsed Republican for this seat? I’d assume Erik Paulsen is the presumptive favorite.

His 1994 challenger Bob Olson has to be kicking himself in the ass right about now. They guy moved his residency up to St Cloud from Orono last month to run against Bachmann.
The district leans Democrat. Its strong pro-choice and anti-war. Look at the special elections and the trends. I believe Klobuchar carried the district too.
Please do find a real Republican and run him/her. The DFL can use the extra seat.

Isn’t Paulson in the Second CD?

Paulsen is in the 3rd.

I will miss the Rammer, a stand up public servant who did what he thought was right and in the best interest of the public.
If the GOP nominates a far right conservative, well then we will lose another seat.

Rammer’s a good guy, but sometimes, he lets his heart overrule his brain.
As far as this being a DFL seat to lose, I wouldn’t bet on it. The gains the DFL has made in CD3 House seats is due to the fact that their candidates sound more GOP than DFL.
Also, don’t underestimate the studpity of the CD3 DFL. Last time, they put up a Aunt Blabby, who didn’t even live in the district.

At this time, I will be supporting Paulsen’s bid for the seat as I think he has the most experience and knows the “Ramstad Way” to do things since he used to be Ramstad’s District Director, but Geoff Michel is an interesting candidate, too. He fits the district better than Paulsen, who is more conservative, but Paulsen is more seasoned and has been through the wars for the GOP.

[...] Since breaking the story about Congressman Ramstad's retirement on Minnesota Democrats Exposed, my phone has been very active. The list of potential GOP candidates I am consistently hearing about has narrowed. [...]

[...] As the blogger who broke the news that Congressman Jim Ramstad was not running for re-election, I have been closely monitoring the race. For the last six months, I had heard rumors from Democrats that certain pro-choice groups had concerns about a specific piece of legislation authored by Bonoff. Democrats told me that this legislation could effect Bonoff's ability to get key endorsements for her congressional campaign. After interviewing LeVang and Maclean, I have since confirmed that the legislation I kept hearing about from Democrats was the Grieving Parents Act. [...]
