3RD CD: LUGAR OUT, SPECULATION NOW ON POTENTIAL LILLEHAUG CANDIDACY
By Michael B. Brodkorb | September 24, 2007
Eric Black is reporting that Andy Luger, the DFL-endorsed candidate for Hennepin County Attorney, has decided against running for Congress in the 3rd CD.
This is surprising.
Some have speculated that Luger getting out opens the door for former U.S. Attorney and failed U.S. Senate candidate David Lillehaug to run. This speculation was fueled by statement from Lillehaug that he would not enter the race if Andy Lugar decided to run.
"In addition, former U.S. Attorney David Lillehaug, a DFLer, said he would not enter the race if Luger does." Source: Pioneer Press, September 19, 2007

Anybody who thought that this race was a great opportunity for the DFL to pick up a seat ought to take a look at how some of its better candidates are deciding to stay away from it. Let’s face it: even if a Dem managed to squeak through the general, this is going to be a miserable seat to hold. Whoever wins will be forced to be raising money constantly to fend off all of the GOP candidates targeting it in 2010 (see: Tim Walz).
I don’t know much about Terry Bonoff, and I don’t really care, but I’m not impressed by a state senator in a swing district who doesn’t have to give up her seat to run. Show me a Democrat who is willing to lay it on the line – a seat, a career – for this seat and then I’ll believe that the Dems are a threat. Simon and Hortman are making all kinds of noise, but it’s just noise at this point. If one of them gets into this, then it’s a race. Until then, it’s an off-year hobby for Bonoff.
