Anybody who thought that this race was a great opportunity for the DFL to pick up a seat ought to take a look at how some of its better candidates are deciding to stay away from it. Let's face it: even if a Dem managed to squeak through the general, this is going to be a miserable seat to hold. Whoever wins will be forced to be raising money constantly to fend off all of the GOP candidates targeting it in 2010 (see: Tim Walz).

I don't know much about Terry Bonoff, and I don't really care, but I'm not impressed by a state senator in a swing district who doesn't have to give up her seat to run. Show me a Democrat who is willing to lay it on the line - a seat, a career - for this seat and then I'll believe that the Dems are a threat. Simon and Hortman are making all kinds of noise, but it's just noise at this point. If one of them gets into this, then it's a race. Until then, it's an off-year hobby for Bonoff.
