FOLLOWING ROWLEY’S PRECEDENT, SARVI STUMBLES INTO RUN FOR CONGRESS

By Michael B. Brodkorb | October 4, 2007

Victoria city administrator Steve Sarvi filed with the FEC today in an attempt to challenge Congressman John Kline for his Second District seat.

Check out his press release after the jump.  In addition to a handful of sloppy typos on his release, I noticed Sarvi's campaign spokesperson is Eileen Weber, a professional lobbyist who lists her taxpayer-funded e-mail account as the contact for Sarvi's campaign.  Sarvi's first act as a candidate is to employ a professional lobbyist as his advisor and use a taxpayer-funded e-mail account for his own campaign?

It appears 2nd CD Democrats are in for a repeat performance of 2006 when Coleen Rowley's train wreck of a campaign made error after error after embarrassing error.  Rowley's continued mistakes was why she was never considered a serious candidate by anyone but the fringe left wing of the DFL party.

The only thing missing from Sarvi's campaign kickoff was the hideous cartoon logo Coleen Rowley embraced during her train-wreck campaign in 2006.

Please read Sarvi's release after the jump.

Sarvi Files for Second District Congressional RacePledging to Fight for a Change of Course at Home and Abroad, Sarvi Files with FEC to Challenge Representative John Kline

Watertown, MN (October 4, 2007) Iraq war veteran and former Watertown mayor Steve Sarvi filed his campaign committee today with the Federal Election Commission, paving the way for a challenge to three-term Republican United States Representative John Kline. Sarvi said that Minnesotans are ready for a change in course both at home and abroad.

"As a veteran of the Iraq war, I‚ve seen first-hand that we need to change strategy in Iraq and change strategy here at home," said Sarvi, a married father of three school-age children.

"Minnesotans want a representative in Washington who listens to their concerns, knows how to bring people together to solve the many challenges we face at home and abroad, and will fight every day to get things done for our  state. I have fought for our nation on many battlefields, and now I'm ready to fight for our district, our state and our nation in Congress," Sarvi said.

Sarvi, who is the city administrator of the City of Victoria, returned in July after serving 16 months in Iraq, the longest any state‚s unit has served in the war. Sarvi stepped aside as mayor in order to volunteer to go to Iraq with the National Guardsmen he trained for deployment. While in Iraq, he worked on civil reconstruction in the war-torn country. Sarvi also  previously served a peace-keeping tour of duty in Kosovo in 2004.

"We in the Second District deserve a representative that isn‚t afraid to to talk to their constituents, and has real-world experience bringing people together to get things done," said Charlie Thomas, a resident of Burnsville and supporter of Sarvi.

"I'm supporting Steve Sarvi for Congress because we need change, plain and simple, and he's the person who knows how to make change work."

Sarvi said his direct war experience influenced his decision to run for Congress, but he added that America needs a new course at home as well, particularly when it comes to ensuring the health and security of our families with good jobs, access to affordable health care and a safe
transportation infrastructure.

"The future of our communities, our state and our country directly depend on the choices we make in Washington," said Sarvi. "Whether I've been on the job in Iraq or on the job in our local government, I've  always put Minnesota values first. In Congress, I will fight for the good jobs, affordable health care and quality transportation we must have in order to change the direction of our state and our country."

Sarvi noted that given his service in Iraq,  his perspective is unique ˜ his strong support for American troops is matched with equally strong
dissatisfaction with the president‚s failed policies.

"I am very proud to have served my country in Iraq," said Sarvi.

"Our district deserves a representative in Congress who will put the safety of our troops and the well-being of our families ahead of blind party loyalty. I want to provide the new leadership and courage that we need in Congress to change course in Iraq and make our sure our district becomes a safer and fairer place for our families at home..

Lying about her incompetence at the FBI was the biggest mistake. Pretending to be a whistleblower was her next biggest mistake. Choosing to run on her dismal record as an incompetent FBI agent was the third biggest mistake.

Colleen Rowley is a complete joke.

Kline wins by 10-15 points!!! This race is another overly hyped race! The only real congressional races will be in the 1st and 3rd districts!!!

A Fox News poll finds that 19 percent of Democrats believe the world will be better off if the U.S. loses the war in Iraq. Another 20 percent say they don’t know. Only three-fifths of Democrats were able to disagree with the proposition that the world would be better off if we lose in Iraq.

Was this release written by a seventh grader? What a bunch of hacks…The democrats are going to try to make this kook out to be another Tim Walz. But, to steal a line, I know Tim Walz and Steve Sarvi is no Tim Walz. And, to take matters further, John Kline is no Gil Gutknecht.

Yawn…Is there anything going on in the 3rd?

There is still that one army vet who is contemplating running against Kline right? An army vet could do quite well in CD2, plus CD2 only has a PVI of I think its R+2.7, that is certianly beatable, especially in a very pro-Democratic year. I think the race has the possibility of being competitive, but it probably wont be.

Gipper, you forgot the 6th. Tinklenberg very well could make the race competitive. I wonder how competitive Walz’s race will be. I figure when it comes to judging how competitive something will be, we are all really biased in favor of our own party so if you guys think Walz will have a tough run, I’ll believe it, although I have my doubts.

Wow, thanks for your service Steve, but could you go back to proper grammar courses please. I really hope you are not helping your children with their homework.

Not sure what it is about the 2nd district DFL, but we get to have fun watching another train wreck!!

Depends on who they stack against Walz, and how much focus is put on Walz’ record as a do-nothing purse poodle.

Tinklenberg will never win the 6th. He only inspires Democrats who are anti-gay and anti-women. The man is a complete slime.

  10. Bob Says:
    October 5th, 2007 at 9:03 PM

This man served his country in the war and is running as a Democrat. I’m sure, like Rush Limbaugh, Michael considers him one of those “phony soldiers.”

  11. Michael B. Brodkorb Says:
    October 5th, 2007 at 9:35 PM

Nothing could be farther from the truth. Sarvis should be applauded for his service to our country.

  12. Nana Says:
    October 5th, 2007 at 10:22 PM

Median income is high in CD2, so residents may not care that John Kline voted against health care for children (SCHIP) and the state may end up with additional cost for Minnesota Care that might result in higher property taxes since Governor Pawlenty is opposed to other tax increases. So CD2 residents may not be motivated for change in their federal representation and may be content with status quo.

  13. Willow Says:
    October 5th, 2007 at 10:34 PM

First, to Bob: The phoney soldier Rush Limbaugh referred to was Jesse MacBeth, a known fraud and slimer of our troops. Google the guy. Are you lefties really that ignorant or just lazy?

Second, I wouldn’t underestimate Steve Sarvi. He was mayor when I moved to Watertown a few short years ago. He’s well-spoken (unlike the press release), well-mannered and a very likeable guy. He struck me as a conservative at city council meetings. In fact, I was shocked to find out he’s a Democrat.

I googled around a bit, and already the lunatic fringe is questioning the fact that he said he would not “cut and run from Iraq.”

A blue dog Democrat may play out very well here in the hinterlands. I must say I’m concerned about Sarvi’s announcement having come to know people in this area.

Michael, John Kline should be applauded for his military service to our country. It’s his service in the Congress which has been lacking.

Let’s hope he turns over a new leaf and starts supporting the troops instead of the military contractors. And that he starts supporting the middle class and not the CEO-donors. And that he’ll start supporting health insurance for children, and not Big Tobacco.

Nah….. I’m dreamin! He’s been for sale since the start.

Will be interesting to see how quick Kline goes negative against an Iraq vet. Probably about as fast as he did against an FBI agent. Honor? He left that behind when he retired from active duty, sorry to say.
